CANADA/NEW ENGLAND CRUISE
While I still gave some email credits to use to send my emails, the following is a post about a recent trip.

We took an 11 day cruise to New England and Canada. Something I’ve been wanted to do during the fall season. It stopped at places we’ve never been. I found a “Free at Sea” deal with Norwegian that was the clincher.

The ‘Free at Sea’ deal included a BOGO flight, free drink package, 150 internet minutes each, $50 excursion credit per day, and one specialty dining. We got the inside cabin knowing we could upgrade for free if all our ducks lined up. The way to do it is to wait for the price to go down for better rooms and then rebook. It’s easier to do before payment needs to be finalized, but it can be done after that date too.

Sure enough, the price of the outsideview room went down to around the same as the inside cabin. They go fast when that happens and we got lucky and were able to get the upgrade for free. We wanted a balcony, but that was around $2,500 more per person on top of the price we already paid. Yes, you read that right. Our room cost around $950 per person for an 11 day cruise.

We cruised out of New York and ended in Quebec with stops to Martha’s Vineyard, Boston, Portland, Halifax, Sydney, Prince Edward Island, St Johns, and Saguenay. The Martha’s Vineyard stop was cancelled due to rough seas for the tenders (like mini ship rowboats) to the port. Bummer, since that was one place I really wanted to see.

In New York I wanted to see a game at Yankee Stadium. It’s one of the few stadiums I haven’t been to. I didn’t have tickets because I wasn’t sure if we would get there in time for the game. We were able to get on a standby flight to get there early enough to do so. We took a subway to the stadium. I found someone selling tickets and he said he had a couple tickets for $40 each. I said I’d pay $20. He asked if I meant each or for both. Total for both I said. I told him I didn’t care if I even went to the game. Then he says $35 for both tickets. The game was already into the first inning, so I knew I had some leverage. I told him $30 final offer. He accepts. They guy next to him said something about me being a good negotiator and he shakes his head. He had to go in line with us to scan the tickets. The Yankees lost the game. Yay! At the gift shop they had a card pack with a card of Aaron Judge upside down. I had to buy it to jinx him. Playing the Guardians in the playoffs he only batted .188, so I think it worked.

In Boston we had the best cannoli we ever had in the Little Italy section of the city. We then met up with someone I haven’t seen in 40 years. She was a good friend of my younger sister. We had chowda with her.

At Faneuil Hall in Boston we got a bargain. A sunglass hut was selling the remaining sunglasses they had for $1 each! They were shutting down for the season. Some were originally $25. We stocked up.

In Portland, Maine we stopped at a fish market on the pier. They had oysters for $1.50 and lobster rolls for $21.95. We ended up getting a couple lobster rolls. Very good and they were freshly made that morning. Lobster rolls at restaurants were very pricey. Most were $26 to $32.

A couple I play volleyball with happened to be passing by on a small ship. They told us which ship they were coming in on and we were already on our ship waiting for them to sail by. We saw each other and waved. So odd to be so far and bump into people we know. I wanted to toss him a beer from the ship, but that might have ended badly.

We ate Prince Edward mussels in Prince Edward Island along with oysters and a lobster roll. The town was cool with a nice downtown (city of Charlottetown).

In Halifax we visited the Titanic Cemetery via a hop-on-hop-off bus. Viator had the best deal for the bus, even better than what the cruise offered with the $50 credit. Hundreds were buried from the Titanic at the cemetery as it was one of the closest destinations from the sinking.

There was a ship laden with explosives in 1917 for WWI war that collided with another ship while In Halifax and the explosion caused part of the ship to pierce a church wall miles away (in the pic below). The explosion killed and injured thousands of people. The explosion was large enough to create a 60 foot tsunami and expose the sea floor. It was one of the largest human-made explosions before the advent of the atomic bomb.

About an hour south of Halifax is where Oak Island is located. It’s the buried treasure island that is featured on a show on the History Channel. We found out that the museum there was closed the day we were there, so we decided not to go. I would’ve brought a shovel had we gone.

Sydney in Nova Scotia was boring. The restaurant/bar service was horrible at a couple places we stopped. Sydney in Australia was much much better. They did have a around 100 foot tall fiddle on the dock that was the highlight.

At Saguenay, north of Quebec, we saw the leaves in peak color. We rode through a fiord to get there. We rented electric bikes through Viator and rode around town. The bikes were kinda like riding a scooter.

We stopped at a cheese factory and had a coffee and delicious cheese curds. On the way over we saw this sign and got a kick out of it:

I believe this sign translates into: Please relocate drunken hussies with ill-fitting socks to the berm of the road.

After we got back we went back to the port after bipping around the tiny town. A lady asked if she can do a survey about the city with us and we said ok. She asked about different things and at the end she asked what can be improved. I told her the place needed more restaurants and shops and a main street as there was only one, yes one, restaurant outside the port. She gave me a look like as if I told her I wanted to eat her brains. She said there were 10 restaurants within 1 mile. We passed by a Tim Horton and McDonalds and wondered if she counted those two, but unless they are clustered together nobody is going to jaunt that far on a cold windy day. She didn’t take the criticism constructively.

Quebec has a very European romantic flair to it. Worth a visit if you ever get to go. Most everything is in French, so you have to translate sometimes. It was discovered by Champlain and has a very interesting history of its beginnings and of himself.

I found a decent happy hour at a restaurant in downtown Quebec. Most cities had restaurants or bars with happy hours, but many of them started near or past the time we had to leave the port. We had free food and drinks on the ship, so not like we needed to eat and drink in town, but to get the local flavor we did at most of our stops.

One of the great things about Canada is the exchange rate. In essence, the current rate puts everything at a 35% discount. The latest rate was for every US dollar I’d get $1.38 in Canadian. I paid with a credit card with no foreign transaction fee and it used the current rates, so everything was cheaper rather than paying with US cash. Find the current exchange rates of countries at https://www.xe.com

We took a ghost tour. Very interesting as they told stories that were very unique. Lots about how housing was built above cemeteries and the ghosts that haunted those homes. The tour gal did say rent was cheap in those places.

Overall, the weather was good, usually in the low 60s. We were expecting more leaves to be at peak, but we were probably 2 weeks or more early in spots. Leaves were changing much later than normal due to climate change. I had to laugh when a gal handing out goat milk ice cream in Quebec asked if we were cold because we weren’t bundled up in a coat like everyone else. Most places early on the trip I wore shorts and a t-shirt while most people were bundled up. Anyway, we say no and that’s because we live in a cold place…not that Quebec is warm. It was chilly there and at night it hit the low 40s, if not colder.

We entered some raffles on the ship. Won a couple of them. First was a $150 credit at the spa. I got a massage. I asked specifically for a deep tissue and the gal massaging me was good at massaging as deep as paper depth and enough that I had to complain as I asked many times to dig deeper. They ended up crediting most all of the massage!

During an art auction my wife won a $200 credit at the jewelry store. Problem is the cheapest thing there was $1,000. Never used it.

We were probably the youngest by 50 years on the ship. A couple times we were the last people out on the ship at night. We had to get our fill of free food and alcohol!

By the end of the cruise I noticed it was a bit of a cough orchestra. Some of the older people were getting sick. We never got sick on the ship. I think all the free alcohol we drank pickled us from getting any viruses.
