Waikiki Beach

HAWAII TRIP
I think everyone would agree that this winter was one of the worst. I know it was bad when I started licking the window where the sun was at. To get away from it we wanted to take our foreign exchange to Key West or Hawaii. We wanted to go somewhere where she could surf and Key West isn’t the best for surfing. So we opted for Hawaii as long as we could find a good deal.

We wanted to go to Maui, which is one of our favorite places. I kept an eye on flights using http://www.Kayak.com and waited for the price to go down enough. It finally lowered to a decent enough deal at $802 roundtrip, but it wasn’t just a roundtrip flight to Maui. It was actually cheaper to fly from Cleveland to Honoulu, stay there for a few days, and then fly to Maui, stay there for a week, and then fly back home. A roundtrip to Maui would’ve cost around $1,000. Roundtrips to just Honolulu dropped as low as $600-some.

The neat thing with Kayak is that it gives you a percentage in confidence on whether it’s the best time to buy the ticket or whether you should wait for a better deal. They also show you a map with the current best deals to major cities across the world. A price comparison calendar also shows when it’s cheapest to travel. Sometimes changing one day might save $100 or more on a flight as we found and it caused me to add an extra day in Hawaii! The savings paid for an extra day there and then some.

The flight was with Delta and I signed up for a Delta credit card to get 40,000 mileage points which means I will get a free flight with them. Plus I got our first bag free for having the card. The one catch is that you have to purchase $1,000 using the card within three months after activating the card which was easy since we were going on the trip.

To get the deal we had two stops. The one stop was in Seattle and we got delayed because of snow there. Seattle hasn’t had snow in three years! Again, Mother Nature decides to spin the wheel of her nastiness while we are on vacation. They had to de-ice the plan which added about two hours to the flight. Then again, so many flights have been cancelled this winter season, so we were lucky to get there on the day we were supposed to.

When you get to Hawaii or any other travel destination be sure to pick up all the booklets at the airport. Most have coupons along with advertised specials at area businesses. They break down all the best things to do around town too.

I rented a car from Budget. I kept finding a better deal and rebooked at a lower rate. You don’t need a credit card for the reservation so it was easy to rebook. I started at about $250 for a three day rental. By the time I booked the last deal which I found only about a week before we left I was able to get a rental for only $96 TOTAL through Priceline. Here’s the best part. It wasn’t for an economy car. It was for a sky blue Ford Mustang convertible. You should have seen the look on our exchange student when I pulled up with the car to pick them up.

Blue Mustang

…hello bird…please don’t crap in our car (it did..)

I used to use autoslash.com to have them find the best deal for me and rebook as the rate went down for car rentals, but they don’t operate anymore. With it working so well too many rental agencies backed out working with them for them to run the site. So I checked on my own using the same concept. I also found the best deal for the Maui portion two days before we arrived. So it paid to check often. For the one week Maui rental it went from $450 down to $227. And I also went from an economy car to a full size car!

In Waikiki we stopped at a restaurant called Chart House for happy hour…of course. We were getting ready to leave and I stood up to go, but stopped to watch the Olympics curling competition. Rita, our exchange student from Portugal, had never seen curling so I was explaining the sport to her. Not often do I get to explain curling to anyone and I was excited to do so. To those of you that never heard of it, it’s a sport that has a polished rock with a handle on it that is slid across ice into a bullseye area. Two people frantically “scrub” the ice with what looks like Swiffers to speed it up or angle it differently. It’s kind like bocce on ice.

Anyway, while I was explaining it we were approached by a man working for the Star Enquirer, Hawaii’s daily newspaper. He wanted to take pictures of us for an upcoming feature about the restaurant in their Friday magazine. So we posed for some shots for the article. We were goofing around laughing about it all and the photographer said we had to freeze since the picture was showing us moving around.

I got the paper and sure enough, there we were plastered on a big pic on a review for the restaurant. We were also on their web-site too. Check out the pic and all at http://www.honolulupulse.com/2014/02/pau-hana-chart-house/. The pic is below too.

Hawaii Chart House

There was quite the assortment of bums. One guy would freeze in a pose like he was casting a spell on the beach. Homelessness is a bit of a problem on the islands. The weather is so nice all year round that anyone can sleep outside. Much needs to be done to take care of those with mental issues. Drugs are bad too. I saw a guy shooting up in his car in a little town we were strolling around.

At an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet we went to we had the pleasure of watching a guy go ballistic about something. I had no idea what he was saying because he was speaking Chinese or some other Asian language. He was complaining to the cashier gal and even pounded his fist on the counter. He was super loud. His wife ended up getting some containers to take some porridge to take home and that was all they took. I’m not kidding, it was porridge he wanted so the king must get his porridge. So as I made sense of it, he wanted his porridge even though all-you-can-eats don’t allow anything to be taken out. He went on and on with his rant and I’m sure it wasn’t the first time he’s done it. How embarrassing. Come to think of it, I didn’t even try the porridge. It must have been some damn good magical porridge. I think that is the first time I’ve used those words in a sentence.

We tried lots of food that we never tried before. We got hooked on acai bowls which is a frozen acai (berry) smoothie with granola, bananas, strawberries, and honey on top. Some other food we tried for the first time was Portuguese sausage, some kind of Hawaiin noodles, and Kulauh pork.

We found lots of Portuguese influences in Hawaii. Some of the early settlers were Portuguese. There were Portuguese bakeries and restaurants. We also came across a handful of people that were Portuguese. One thing Portuguese I was glad I didn’t come across was a Portuguese man-o-war which is a nasty huge jellyfish.

Save at Wyndham Hotels & Resorts with Last Minute Deals!

We stayed at a Ramada by Waikiki Beach for $99 for two nights TOTAL. It was a deal I got through Eversave. No problems using the certificate. The hotel was fine too. Had a nice fitness center and pool and was central to everything. All I had to do was book it from 30 to 90 days before we arrived. Sometimes they don’t have availability. You work with an agent to set it up. Most hotels in Waikiki were over $200 a night.

I have a Wyndham rewards loyalty number (free – be sure to sign up for any rewards programs before you travel). Ramada is part of the Wyndham group, so I was able to get discounted parking at the hotel for having it.

I usually only book hotels rated 4 out of 5 on Hotels.com or Travelocity or Trip Advisor so that I avoid the nasty ones. I could stay at a hotel for $50 a night in just about any city, but not if they are rated poorly.

Groupon Getaways

I also checked Groupon Getaways and Living Social Escapes as at times they also had additional discount codes, but none were where we wanted to stay or were available at the prices I wanted. We have used them before and they do have great deals at some locations. I also dug around for deals on those sites for restaurant or other deals for excursions, etc on both sites.

I got the Entertainment book for Hawaii for only $15. They had a deal where the first one was $19.99 (I got a Cleveland one) and the second purchased book was $15 (find the deal above). We used a ton of coupons from the book. In the end we gave it to a guy that worked on one of the snorkeling boats we went on. Our Rita made friends with him and we even had dinner with him. He was very much the surfer type and into holistic ways. Yet he was from New Jersey. Interesting story about him was that he spent about a year on Hilo in a house in the jungle area that didn’t have water or electricity. Lived off the land and still does somewhat living in Maui by going over to Hana to find papaya and bananas that grow in the wild. He has three jobs and a degree from Monmouth. He worked some after getting out of college in a real job and saw that it wasn’t for him, so he’s doing what he wants to do at his own pace and is enjoying life. Many of us would be envious as I’ve read survey after survey finds workers more stressed than ever and looking for other jobs even though they have a job. With many baby boomers retiring in the coming years, employers may find that they took good workers for granted, so hopefully work environments will get better everywhere.

We made good use of the happy hours around town. Best to pick up a local paper or “Scene-like” magazine to find the deals. Most had signs up with their Happy Hour deals. I found some restaurant deals in the daily newspaper too.

Using IDine (http://www.idine.com), a program that ties in your credit card to restaurants that are part of their program, I was able to get bonus dollar rewards. They give you anywhere from 5% to 20% back on your total bill in credits that once they accumulate to $20 they send you a rebate credit card. It’s free to use too. I’ve been using them for eons.

In Maui we stayed in Kihei which is in the middle south-western area of the state. Get this. The highest priced hotels in the world for the Valentine’s day weekend were in Kihei at an average price of $415. I noticed as I was trolling for better deals that most of the hotels were selling out and weren’t offering that great a deal. That didn’t stop me from finding a deal. I was able to get a nice condo at $150 per night! We also had to stay a night at a place called Maui Seaside. Nothing special, but they included breakfast and I got that room for $143 on Travelocity. Again I had to keep checking for deals and with this one I had to prepay.

Limited Time Offer - $555 Air Credit

We went to Boss Frogs to book some excursions and get rentals. I was persistent in asking for a deal. It was his rule to wait until customers ask for a deal three times before he offers up a deal. Part of the deal was to go to a timeshare presentation. I was game for it as long as it was reasonable. They offered a $100 credit for going to a timeshare schpiel plus extra discounts on the what we booked. We rented a surfboard for the week and booked a whale watch and snorkeling cruise that included breakfast and lunch. After the credit it cost us $157. Not too shabby for six tickets and a weekly rental.

They said the timeshare presentation would take about 90 minutes, but it took about 15 minutes longer. Of course, I was skeptical about going to one. There were five couples total and one just got married the night before! My guess is that they both were going to change the oil in their car that afternoon and then for dinner they would go to Arby’s.

The first guy was a bit condescending. He asked me how much I paid for our room in Maui. Not smart on his part. When I told him I paid $150 for the room he said I did real good. Most people spend at least $250 for a room in Hawaii and I know he was hoping to use what I paid to show what a deal a timeshare was …which it wasn’t.

He said they don’t charge resort fees for their stays, but then later said they charged maintenance fees. Then you have to pay for points to use on the stays you want. PLUS you have to pay for the room itself. He showed some places to stay in Kihei that cost around $1,000. That is about what I paid, but without having to pay any fees or using points.

Initially the points were $8.25 per point and he “generously” dropped it to $4 per point. Most places you had to use around 2,000 to 3,000 points which comes to $400 to $1,200 dollars on top of the maintenance fees and what you had to pay to stay at the resort.

ASAP 12 Hour Deal!

He said they give you gold status and 35% off with Hertz. Whoopteedoo. I got a better discount looking for deals.

You are locked into only staying at properties on their available schedule, typically one week at a time. Why would I want to be forced into staying somewhere longer or shorter than I want?

They said it cost around $35,000 for three years of which the points you accumulate will expire! That is nutso. They say it’s deeded which means you can pass it on to someone else. I know too may people that wish they never signed up for their timeshare, but they get caught up in the sales pitch and wish to go on vacation again to places they like.

So, in essence, unless you want to pay at least triple more for stays, don’t ever sign up for timeshares. It’s more for folks that have too much money and want to stay at nice places for the most part.

After the first guy they sent us to their closer. I said I’m very frugal and there is no way I would want to sign up for their timeshare and I didn’t want to waste his time. I gave him the reasons and he said he would just do what he has to share and that he would sign us out. He started to get into the numbers a little too much and I cut him off and said, look, it ain’t gonna happen and we have to go and he wrapped it up.

Then they send you to a “quality control” person. They make sure the closer wasn’t too heavy-handed and they also try to see if there is any glimmer of hope that they might still convince you to sign up. So they ask on a scale of 1 to 7 with 1 being now way and 7 being you would want to do the timeshare and I told him it was a 1. They wrapped things up from there. We were $100 richer plus got some extra discounts, a granola bar, coffee, a newspaper from the lobby, and I saw how the timeshare schpiel works nowadays.

Humpback Whale

We saw tons of whales during our stay. They say the peak of the whale season is around Valentine’s day. Most all are humpbacks. They were all over the place and apparently their breeding habits made for lots of whale action above the waves too.

In Waikiki there were two different reports of a 10 foot shark by Waikiki beach. While I was snorkeling I asked the fish if they’d seen a big shark in the area and they all nodded their head no so I kept on snorkeling.

All kidding aside, on Maui two people died this year from sharks this year. One had a leg bit off while fishing. A gal that was snorkeling had her arm bit off and died some weeks later. She was at the beach we went to for surfing and some snorkeling. There was a spike in attacks and we had to take it seriously.

I tried to snorkel out where the whales were again, but the water was murky the one time I tried because it had just rained the night before. The day before I was snorkeling in water that had churned up some sand and while I was swimming some big five foot object appeared swimming in front of me. I freaked before I made out that it was a turtle.

The week we got to Maui a paddle boarder at the beach we went to had her board bumped and bit by a 12 foot tiger shark. The week prior a 7 foot one was spotted at the same beach. But it didn’t stop us from spending time in the water. The locals have noticed that the sharks are being more aggressive. It kept me from venturing out too far.

If you dare, check out http://oos.soest.hawaii.edu/pacioos/projects/sharks/ that will show you where tagged sharks came to the surface. When they breach the water the signal from their transmitter is picked up. Sure enough, some were at beaches the same day we were there.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I did see stingray swim right by me on one beach. It wasn’t very far from shore either. Maybe 20 feet. They have these long tails that you automatically want to pull. Not a good idea.

Our Rita surfed well while I tried surfing, but I couldn’t get the hang of it. The board was the right size for her, but not for me. I surfed better last time around we were there.

Turtle Boulders

Which are boulders and which are turtles?

At one beach that had crazy big waves a bunch of turtles came to rest on shore. I wanted to check out the snorkeling and a local said it was great as long as I stayed in the corner area of the beach. Well, I nearly got swept out to sea doing it.

I was snorkeling and the current was tossing me around as I tried to swim away from it. You’re supposed to swim parallel to the beach to get out of a rip tide or current. In one spot there was a current that was just flowing like a faucet and I tried to swim past it. No go so I went for the rocks. Still bad, but I was freaking a bit because as I look up I see a cross with flowers on it that someone planted just above the rocks where someone must have drowned. Yep, clue #2 to get out of there quick. The first clue was the turtle were resting on the beach because they also were tired of the currents and all. If I get swept out there are huge waves that will be crashing over me and lots of nasty rocks that they were crashing on.

I made for broke and just went all out to swim to the rocks and I lost one of my swim shoes. Goodbye shoe, because there is no way I was going back for it. I made it to the rocks and was thankful there were no sea urchins there. A wave crashed over me and almost knocked me back out in the water. I saw my shoe floating around and thought of getting it for a second, but rationale prevailed and I let the sea do whatever it wanted with it. Maybe one of the turtles will find it and use it.

In talking with the surfer guy we met he said that surfers get stuck under the waves for 30 seconds up to two minutes when the waves crash into them. Scary. It didn’t stop me from snorkeling again, but I made sure to stay out of anything that looked anything like the churn on that beach.

Shop CVSPhoto.com for all your photo needs

I was able to find a Walgreens and CVS there. The CVS there are Long Drugs as CVS bought them out. I used some Extrabucks I had at the one store in Honolulu and the cashier was impressed as to how much I saved. They had a great deal on Maui coffee with flavors like toasted coconut and chocolate macadamia for only $3.99. I’m a papaya-eating fool and found some great deals on papayas that were ripe and needed to sell – for only 99 cents EACH and not per pound.

The price for items at grocery stores was crazy on some items. Cereal was $7. Bananas were $1.69 a pound! We got some day old bread and bakery items for cheap. We got our usual 2 liters of pop (at $1.50) to use throughout the trip. Great at the beach and when getting fast food as pop was very expensive.

Mick Fleetwod from Fleetwood and Mac lives on Maui. He was grand marshal for their whale parade while we were there. We stopped at his restaurant there on Lahaina. A bartender there said Steven Tyler was in town and they partied it up together.

Maui Sunrise

Sunrise over 10,000 feet high on Maui.

We had to get up at 3:30 in the morning to drive to the top of Mount Haleakua to see the sunrise. We got in for free since it was President’s Day weekend! The mountain is over 10,000 feet high. It was cold and windy there. The clouds were below us. Some people had wine they poured to toast the sunrise. I was thinking more hot cocoa.

We used a handful of Restaurant.com gift certificates at different restaurants. Most all had great food, some really good, even the sports bar and grilles. Some of the best were Stopwatch restaurant for their garlic peanut Thai salad dressing and Mahi Mahi. The Sports Page Bar & Grille had great Mahi Mahi also. Maui Roasters had awesome pastries and sandwiches.

We did a lot during the trip. Never really slept in. I asked Rita what half of everything we did would she not like to have done, meaning if we slept in and took it easy we would’ve had to cut out half of what we did. She said she would have done it exactly the same. I didn’t want to go on vacation and sleep in the room and watch TV all day…why go when I can do that at home and save a grand or two? I’m there to experience it all and enjoy what short time we have there. But now I need a vacation to rest up. Hello bed and remote!

NO SMOKING PLEASE
CVS has decided to not sell cigarettes. Big move on their part. They decided selling cigarettes doesn’t fit with their being a health provider as they do have minute clinics in their stores. Smoking is an expensive bad habit that causes plenty of health-related issues and maybe now with stores deciding not to sell them, might it be the end of cigarettes?? How it effects sales will be interesting. Other stores might follow their lead if it doesn’t put a dent in their sales.

Back some years ago when Ohio decided to eliminate smoking in restaurants many of them were up in arms because they thought they would lose tons of business. Instead most of them built outdoor patios for smokers and non-smokers alike. It didn’t stop smokers from eating and drinking at restaurants, so the effect wasn’t as bad as it was initially made to be. If anything it was a good move all around as patrons can now enjoy great outdoor patios instead of being confined indoors during the summer.

UNITED HUB LOST
Cleveland lost its United Airlines hub. So what does that mean to folks that fly out of Cleveland? Many convenient non-stops will be lost. However, as a comparison, when Pittsburgh lost their US Airways hub, airfares went down 26 percent as discount airlines moved in. I think they will as the demand will still be here, especially when flights are consistently booked full. Check other airports in the region for better fares and all like Akron/Canton and others that are within a couple hours or so like Columbus, Detroit, or Pittsburgh. Lets hope some other airlines take the legs that were lost and compete better in the market.

BUGS IN YOUR FOOD
Did you know the FDA allows bug parts in the food we eat? You would think I’m joking about it, but no, it’s true. Pretty much all food and even chocolate has bug and rodent parts that are allowed to be in them up to a certain amount. The FDA takes action when the limits are exceeded. There have been enough times where I found bugs like gnats and cockroaches in my food at restaurants, but this is different as the Food and Drug Administration tests the food to make sure the food we eat don’t exceed the limits. Are you ready now for that diet you’ve been saying you want to go on? It’s like you’re on your own little episode of Fear Factor. Little did you know that every day you shovel down larvae, fly eggs, rodent hairs, and maggots into your gullet. Read on if you dare as to what is the maximum allowed in the food you eat – Long-postponed Diet here I come!:

CHOCOLATE AND CHOCOLATE LIQUOR
Average is 60 or more insect fragments per 100 grams when 6 100-gram subsamples are examined or Any 1 subsample contains 90 or more insect fragments.
Average is 1 or more rodent hairs per 100 grams in 6 100-gram subsamples examined OR Any 1 subsample contains 3 or more rodent hairs.
For chocolate liquor, if the shell is in excess of 2% calculated on the basis of alkali-free nibs.

CORN: SWEET CORN, CANNED
Insect larvae (corn ear worms, corn borers) 2 or more 3mm or longer larvae, cast skins, larval or cast skin fragments of corn ear worms or corn borer and the aggregate length of such larvae, cast skins, larval or cast skin fragments exceeds 12 mm in 24 pounds (24 No. 303 cans or equivalent)

PEANUT BUTTER
Average of 30 or more insect fragments per 100 grams
Average of 1 or more rodent hairs per 100 grams

POPCORN
1 or more rodent excreta pellets are found in 1 or more subsamples, and 1 or more rodent hairs are found in 2 or more other subsamples or
2 or more rodent hairs per pound and rodent hair is found in 50% or more of the subsamples or
20 or more gnawed grains per pound and rodent hair is found in 50% or more of the subsamples

TOMATO PASTE, PIZZA AND OTHER SAUCES
Average of 30 or more fly eggs per 100 grams or 15 or more fly eggs and 1 or more maggots per 100 grams
or 2 or more maggots per 100 grams in a minimum of 12 subsamples.

TOMATOES, CANNED
Average of 10 or more fly eggs per 500 grams or 5 or more fly eggs and 1 or more maggots per 500 grams
or 2 or more maggots per 500 grams.

TOMATO JUICE
Average of 10 or more fly eggs per 100 grams or 5 or more fly eggs and 1 or more maggots per 100 grams
or 2 or more maggots per 100 grams, in a minimum of 12 subsamples.
Average mold count in 6 subsamples is 24% or more and the counts of all of the subsamples are more than 20%

WHEAT FLOUR
Average of 75 or more insect fragments per 50 grams.
Average of 1 or more rodent hairs per 50 grams.

Find out what the limits on other food items on this link: http://www.fda.gov/food/guidanceregulation/guidancedocumentsregulatoryinformation/sanitationtransportation/ucm056174.htm

Cochineal extract, a code word for bugs as an ingredient, is found in food in makeup. It’s a ground up bug indigenous to Latin America. They used dried eggs and bodies of the female Dactylopius coccus, a beetle-like insect that preys on cactus plants for the pigment. The ingredient is sometimes called carmine. It takes 70,000 insects to make one pound of cochineal. I wish I was making this stuff up, but no, it’s true.

Priceline Flights, Hotels, Rental Cars & More!

TOP TEN BEST THINGS ABOUT BUGS
10) Praying Mantis’ legs make great toothpicks.
9) Being frightened by a bug helps stimulate my bowel movements.
8) Swatting at mosquitos makes for much needed excercise.
7) Rice and larvae look and taste all the same.
6) The mating calls of crickets makes me want to nap.
5) When you close your eyes, balled-up potato bugs taste like M&Ms.
4) I appreciate the work ethic of soldier ants.
3) Lightning bugs are a cheaper option to pricey CFL light bulbs.
2) Sticky spider webs help hold up magnets that keep slipping off the refrigerator.
1) Lice and burrowed maggots keep me company when I’m lonely.

ORGANIC FOOD
Organic foods don’t allow pesticides to be used on them. I wouldn’t be surprised if organic food is on the higher end of larvae, maggots, and other bug stuff being found in it. Bugs won’t kill you, but the pesticides that they use to kill them might though. I guess I’d rather have to ingest undectable bug stuff rather than a dose or two of Raid or whatever bug killer is used on the crops.
