2013 STORE REWARDS PROGRAM GRADES
So which stores had the best rewards programs this past year? Which have the best deals? What stores offer the best products? How about which ones treat their employees right? I’m passing out grades for the best stores for consumers. The grades are weighted most on which have the best deals.
Some folks are very loyal to their stores, but if you could get better deals at another store would you go there? We’re creatures of habit and probably shop at the same stores that we’ve shopped at for years and years. I always like to check out stores to see if they’ve gotten better (or worse). I don’t want to miss out on deals!
Some stores have gotten better, but most haven’t gotten better. Back ten years ago the rewards/rebate programs were much different. There were many more rebate programs with lots of great rebates. Back then you were able to get more razors, shampoo, and hair color for free.
I didn’t take into consideration that some of the stores I go to have bat crazy cashiers. Some are also smelly. I’m not kidding. I can smell them from across the counter. They smell. I want to spritz them with some perfume just so that I don’t have to hold my breath. No good smelly cashiers…my nostrils are not happy with you and your avoidance of cleansing your nether regions.
I could also ding plenty of the stores for having cashiers that don’t know how the registers or programs work. That’s a training issue. It just varies too much across stores depending on their manager. Sometimes I want to have a Sunday gospel chorus behind me sing “Allellulia” when certain cashiers figure out how to get a coupon to work with their system.
I do love the cashiers that call for back-up right away when the line is long and they have a large order to get through, especially when coupons are involved. To thank them I like to give them an aspirin or two or a few dollops of shampoo or whatever I might have extras of that I bought.
You may be surprised that I have listed Giant Eagle the best. Many folks think their prices are high. Maybe back some years ago they were, but not so much anymore. With Giant Eagle’s other numerous savings programs that other stores don’t have or aren’t as good as it bubbles them up to the top. And just because a store is known to have low prices in the past doesn’t mean they are still low. Marc’s and Wal-Mart’s prices aren’t as good as they used to be. Shopping there takes the burden off of having to use coupons and find sales and many people like that simple approach which may not get you the best deals, but deals that are good enough.
But comparing prices at stores that have everyday low prices (or so they say) to those that also have items that go on sale is not comparing stores apples to apples. As with Giant Eagle figure in whether the item is on sale, gets Fuelperks, gets double coupons, includes eOffers, plus where they have dollars off on your next shopping trips deals, etc. So if you haven’t been to some of these stores that graded well, give them another chance. You may be surprised that they are cheaper or have better savings programs than the stores you go to now. And remember, buy items on sale and match them with coupons to get the best deals.
GIANT EAGLE: A-
Pros:
Double Coupons up to 99 cents all day, every day.
10 cent Fuelperks with every $50 purchase.
20 cent Fuelperks at times with gift card purchases.
Fuelperk deals when purchasing certain items.
4 cents per $50 spent using Giant Eagle credit card.
They match competitor coupons (will be ending on 1/21 – frown).
Register coupons, some for dollars off your next shopping trip.
They offer tons of eOffers (electronic coupons) that can be stacked with a manufacturer coupon.
New lower prices.
BOGO deals
Decent amount of blinkie coupon machines in store.
Beer and wine rebates in store.
Freebies or close to free items most every week with double coupons
$30 worth of Fuel savings with transferred prescription coupons.
Some free prescriptions.
Can redeem coupons if you forgot to give one to a cashier up to seven days after purchase.
Correct price guarantee – get first item free if item rings up with the wrong price
Cons:
High produce prices. Very few go on sale.
Some prices on items still high. Hard for them to get away from the image that their everyday prices were high, but not so much anymore.
ALDIS: B
Pros:
Awesome produce sales
New organic foods
Super fast cashiers – do they get free Red Bull?
Decent dairy deals
Great guarantee program
Stores are sized for easy in and out.

Stores look low end.
Have to pay for bags.
They don’t take coupons.
Limited payment options
Limited variety of stock
Have to pay for cart.
RITE AID (UP Rewards): B –
Pros:
Lotsa great UP rewards deals.
I like that you can get more than one offer on most of the deals.
Enough deals to keep you coming back each week on a good variety of items.
Video Values coupons add to savings (can stack with manufacturer coupon).
They changed the Video Values coupons so that you didn’t have to type in a captcha code.
Electronic coupons can be loaded to your card from their site.
Some gift card deals with their UP rewards.
Additional discounts with each reward level reached
Cons:
When they moved the UP rewards to load onto your card automatically they didn’t print on the receipt the amount of rewards you had on the card.
Rewards expire way too quick.
Not a ton of freebies each week.
Would like to see Video Value coupons loaded to card and not have to watch the video to get them.
The regular price on some items are over-priced.
MARCS: C
Pros:
Ok everyday low prices (used to be better).
Ok produce prices (used to be better).
Gift card deals like the 10 cents off a gallon of Speedway gas.
Good closeout deals.
Cons:
Some stores are messy and congested.
No super deals like you can get at Giant Eagle on a consistent basis.
No real weekly sales, just everyday prices.
Limited payment options.
CVS (Extrabucks): C
Pros:
If it wasn’t for the ton of Extrabucks freebies over the week of Black Friday, the grade would be much lower.
Usually something can be had for savings of 70% off or more every week.
Extra coupons given at the coupon kiosk
Prescription Extrabuck rewards
$X of $X spent coupons given at times
Earn 2% in Extrabucks rewards on most purchases (given after each quarter)
Cons:
Not as many Extrabucks freebies as in years past.
Not as many $4 off $20 purchase kind of coupons as in years past.
Not as many additional coupons printing on receipt or coupon kiosk
Rewards don’t expire as quick as UP rewards and Register rewards, but still too quick.
Stock has been running low on some items.
The regular price on some items are over-priced.
OFFICEMAX (Maxperks): C
Pros:
Some great freebie Maxperks deals throughout the year, especially office supplies and school items.
Allowed multiple limits on Maxperk deals.
Sent $10 off $40 coupons or the like every so often.
Store personel are always asking if I need help.
Online additional discounts given such as $X of $X deals
MaxPerks members get 5% back in rewards on their purchases.
Cons:
Maxperks deals tailed off a ton at the end of the year.
Not many tech freebies like in year’s past.
The coupons they sent or codes now are adjusting the Maxperks value.
Not always enough of the Maxperk items in stock.
DOLLAR STORES: C
Pros:
Most all now take coupons.
Clearance items can be very low priced.
They have $5 off $25 (or other amounts) coupons at times.
Cons:
Items can be cheap, but also cheaply made.
Limited selection.
STAPLES (Easy Rebates): C-
Pros:
School deals were great.
Easy to fill out the rebates online.
Always freebie photo paper and low-priced paper.
Cons:
Seemed to be less deals this year, especially over Black Friday
HEINENS: C-
Pros:
Decent dollar sales
New loyalty program.
If you want to feel elite, this is the store.
Cons:
Everyday prices are high.
Limited deals.
No gas rewards.
They are all about quality, but a box of Cheerios is the same at Marcs, Giant Eagle, Dollar Stores, etc. Aside from the bakery, prepared foods, and meats the rest of what they sell for the most part is just like any other store. But if you did a blind taste test on even those items, could you figure out which store they came from?
WAREHOUSE CLUBS: D+
Pros:
Decent Quality.
Lots of freebie food stations.
Costco treats their employees right.
Good deals on non-grocery items like tires and some on travel and other items.
Cons:
You have to pay to shop there.
You have to buy in humongous bulk sizes. Many of which may get thrown out because it spoils before getting used.
Most don’t take coupons, although BJs does.
Walgreens (Register Rewards/Balance Rewards): D+
Pros:
Lots of Register Reward deals on Thanksgiving/Black Friday.
They have a Balance Rewards program that offers some savings.
Cons:
Very few Register Rewards deals, especially for items of no use (no, I don’t need any more menopause medication).
New Balance Rewards program stinks – confusing and you usually have to buy more than one item.
Can only use one manufacturer coupon per item (Register Reward is considered a manufacturer coupon).
Always run out of the freebie Register Rewards items early and even though they say the item will be stocked when the truck comes in later in the week it rarely happens.
Their new scanners have a hard time reading the Register Reward coupons and other coupons.
Register Rewards expire too quick.
The regular price on some items are over-priced.
SEARS/KMART (Shop Your Way Rewards): D
People are still not attracted to shopping at Sears or K-Mart as their same store sales from last year dropped significantly from the prior year. About 70% of their sales are from Shop Your Way Reward Members. They need some loss leaders to get people in the store.
Pros:
It’s nice that they have some type of rewards program that earns credits for money spent there.
You get 5 double $1 coupons having the card.
They have a decent amount of $10 off $50 coupons for certain category items (lawn, clothing, etc.)
Cons:
You only get 5 doubles.
Not many deals. More of a loyalty card than anything.
The cost to now drive to the nearest K-Mart after many of their stores closed to get the $1 doubles is not worth the cost in gas.
They don’t send an ad to my house anymore because…they closed one close to me.
Stock can be lacking.
WAL-MART: D
The past 5 years the number of Walmart stores increased by 455 stores, a 13% increase, while employment decreased by 20,000 employees or 1.4%. Walmart placed last among department and discount stores in the American Customer Satisfaction Index in 2013, the sixth year in a row they have taken last place or tied for last. So it’s no wonder customers are upset about shelves not being stocked and not enough cashiers at Wal-mart. Too many of their workers get such low pay that they qualify for government assistance which taxpayers have to subsidize even though Walmart makes billions in profits. I bet if they put money back into the wallets of their workers they would see their lagging sales start to jump.
Pros:
Supposed everyday low prices although they aren’t as low as they used to be.
Coupon overage (credit)
Cons:
No real weekly sales, just everyday prices.
Very high produce prices.
They don’t double coupons.
Their fuel program isn’t very good.
No reward programs.
Shelves are usually not fully stocked.
Not enough employees at registers, etc.
Behemoth stores are way too big – if you forget something you have to take a commuter plane just to get to the other side of the store
No more greeters.
Too much of what they sell is from China when it used to be mostly U.S. products.

GIANT EAGLE
Giant Eagle will stop taking competitor’s coupons after the 21st. It was a great promotion since I was able to use the $5 off $XX and even $10 of $XX coupons from stores like GFS, Dollar General, and others. I know some cashiers had a hard time figuring out which competitor’s coupons were ok. Some stores seemed to have different rules than others too. In the end I’m sure Giant Eagle was losing too much money taking them and their cashiers had a hard time with them as to what was ok to take and what wasn’t, so they had to stop the promotion.
You never know when a good savings program will stop…remember the days of rebates at most every store? Now they are rare. So take advantage of the deals while they are out there! Double coupons save tons and some shoppers don’t realize how much savings can be had with them. I think many shoppers underestimate the amount they can save at Giant Eagle. Competitor’s coupons saved shoppers so much they had to get rid of them! If you haven’t done double coupons at Giant Eagle, get started! You can get stuff for free!
Giant Eagle doubles coupons that are 99 cents or less. That means a .75 coupon will double to $1.50 off. It happens automatically when a coupon that is 99 cents or less is scanned at the register – 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
