SWEETBERRY MEASLES
If you were in Sweetberry in Wickliffe between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Oct. 3, 5 or 6, you may have come into contact with someone with measles. Those hours include the two hours after the person left, when the virus could have remained in the air. Symptoms could develop between Oct. 10 and Oct. 27, according to the health district. They typically appear seven to 21 days after exposure but may develop later in people with compromised immune systems. The store is very tight and people are crowded together elbow to elbow, so if you are experiencing any symptoms of measles go see your doctor. If you are not vaccinated or immune, there is a 9 in 10 chance you’ll get sick if you’re exposed — even from sharing the same air, briefly or hours later, with someone who has measles.
Measles was declared eliminated from the U.S. in 2000. However, over 4,000 cases were reported in 2026. In 2024 there were 285 reported cases in the U.S. Recently, in Pennsylvania there were 6 measles-associated deaths with many in the Amish community.
Measles is an infection caused by a virus that primarily affects unvaccinated children and nonimmunized adults. Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, rash and red eyes (“pink eye,” or conjunctivitis), and they typically show up eight to 12 days after initial exposure to the virus. The characteristic measles rash appears three to five days after the first symptoms appear. Additional complications, such as ear infections, pneumonia and diarrhea, can occur.
A serious complication of measles is acute encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain, which can result in permanent brain damage in one of every 1,000 cases. In the U.S., death from neurologic or respiratory complications of measles occurs in one to three of every 1,000 cases.
In addition, there is a late-onset complication called subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). This rare, degenerative and fatal central nervous system disease can occur seven to 11 years after a primary measles infection, with the highest rates seen in children infected before 2 years of age.
Measles is one of the most highly communicable infections. It’s spread through direct contact with infectious droplets or through the air. Patients with a measles infection are contagious from four days before the rash through four days after the rash appears.
More than 97% of people who receive two doses of the MMR vaccine develop immunity to measles. The second dose of the vaccine protects those who fail to respond to their primary dose.
AT&T DATA BREACH SETTLEMENT
A federal judge has granted final approval to a $177 million class-action settlement resolving lawsuits related to two major 2024 data breaches involving AT&T. While the company did not admit to wrongdoing, the agreement provides compensation for millions of customers whose personal information was exposed during the security incidents.
The settlement funds are divided into two main categories, with the final payment amount for most claimants depending on whether they provided documentation for specific financial losses. Pro rata distributions will be made from the remaining funds after all documented-loss claims and associated expenses are paid.
Documented-loss reimbursements — Claimants who provided evidence of out-of-pocket financial losses directly traceable to the incidents may receive up to $5,000 for the first breach and up to $2,500 for the second breach.
Tiered cash payments — Customers who did not provide documentation of losses are eligible for smaller, tiered payments estimated between $6.50 and $40, which are calculated based on the specific type of information exposed.
Payment timeline — Distribution is expected to begin following the conclusion of the appeals period, with payments projected to be sent out within 60 days of the settlement becoming effective.
Approved claimants do not need to take further action to receive their payment, provided they already filed a valid claim.
The two incidents prompted lawsuits alleging that AT&T failed to properly safeguard customer data or notify affected individuals promptly. These breaches exposed sensitive information belonging to millions of current and former account holders.
First incident — Disclosed in March 2024, this breach involved a data set on the dark web containing Social Security numbers, addresses, and passcodes for roughly 73 million current and former customers.
Second incident — Disclosed in July 2024, this breach occurred when hackers accessed customer data from a third-party cloud platform, exposing call and text message records for nearly all cellular customers over a six-month period in 2022.
Claim volume — Nearly 4.9 million claim forms were submitted by the December 2025 deadline, with approximately 804,000 of those submissions flagged for potential fraud requiring additional identity verification.
WHERE CAN I FIND…?
I was shopping at Giant Eagle with a cart in front of me. An elderly man in a scooter comes up and asks me where the magazines are.
Option 1: Give him a snarky answer like – sir, you will find them at a book store or your doctor’s office.
Option 2: Tell him exactly where they are and know I did a good deed for the day and then treat myself to a ice cream sundae.
Option 3: Pretend I don’t speak English and then run like the dickens.
Option 4: Politely tell him I don’t work at Giant Eagle.
Option 5: Loudly tell him to look me over and look for badge or any indication I actually work at Giant Eagle and tell him just because I’m a middle aged man with a collared shirt and dress pants with a serious look on my face doesn’t mean I work for the store.
What option did I take? I treated myself to an ice cream sundae.
