WHATS IN A NAME
As we go through our day we don’t notice the nuances of things that we’ve been accustomed to, including product or store names and the history of how the name came about. Some of these will blow your mind and make you want to scratch your brains out.

Hershey – Why not call it “Hers Hey”? Milton Hershey, the founder, had three failed candy shop businesses before embarking on the Hershey chocolate empire. Their first factory didn’t have windows so that the workers wouldn’t get distracted.

Vaseline = Vase Line, yet we pronounce it like Vazalean – The name Vaseline comes from the German word for water and the Greek word for oil.

Nike – We say Nikee, but why not say it as one syllable like Mike – named after the Greek Goddess of Victory. The person that created the “Just Do It” moniker credits the inspiration for the slogan to “Let’s do it”, the last words spoken by Gary Gilmore before he was executed for murder. The execution was in Utah by a firing squad.

Petsmart – Is it Pet Smart or Pets Mart? To make it more confusing they started out as Pet Smart and then changed to PETsMart. It’s now PetSmart. Is Smart Pet next?

Charmin – Is that short for Charming? There is no apostrophe after the n, so apparently not. Maybe it means you are using charm in your tuckus. Should it maybe called Charmout? In 2000, Mr Whipple was replaced by the Charmin Bears. Going back further, Charmin Ultra replaced the White Could brand. I remember stocking White Cloud back in my retail days. Tons of it. They used to make it in all kinds of colors too, including pink, green, and yellow.

Ocean Spray – Ocean spray from an ocean wave would be salty, but all of their products are Cranberry drinks made from fruit. Nothing seafoody or salty there.

Hellmanns – Hell Man – Did it get named because someone was cussing? Nope, the mayonaisse was named after, Richard Hellman, who emigrated from Prussia. Fun fact. It’s called Hellmanns in states east of the Rockies, but Best Brand west of the Rockies. Kind of how some places pop is called soda or coke.

Amazon – Amazon was originally called Cadabra. They changed the name to Amazon.com, Inc, because a lawyer misheard its original name as “cadaver”. Jeff Bezos, the founder, selected this name by looking through a dictionary; he settled on “Amazon” because it was a place that was “exotic and different”. Additionally, a name that began with “A” was preferred because it would probably be at the top of an alphabetized list. They started out at only selling books. Now look at em.

SHUT DOWN
Azteca Mexican Restaurant at 9515 Diamond Centre Road in Mentor has had its food license suspended by order of the Board of Health of the Lake County General Health District. They must remain closed until further notice. They may re-open on July 10 after a re-inspection and as long as all training and documentation has been provided to the LCGHD Environmental Health staff.

It’s rare for the Health Department to shut down a restaurant. On Cleveland.com they listed restaurants in area counties which had the highest number of food inspection violations. Azteca was listed 5th with 45 food inspection violations during the inspection year from March 2022 through February 2023, state records show:
June 23, 2022 – 19 violations, including 5 critical.
June 30, 2022 – 10 violations, including 3 critical.
July 7, 2022 – 5 violations, including 3 critical.
Aug. 30, 2022 – 4 violations, including 1 critical.
Oct. 6, 2022 – 2 violations, including 2 critical.
Jan. 11, 2023 – 5 violations, including 2 critical.

They weren’t the worst in total # of violations. Here are the others for Lake County during inspection year March 2022 through February 2023, state records show:
#4 – Kentucky Fried Chicken in Painesville – 47 food inspection violations
#3 – Jackie’s Sports Bar & Grill in Painesville – 56 food inspection violations
#2 – Rider’s Inn in Painesville – 58 food inspection violations
#1 – Mentor Avenue Family Restaurant in Painesville Township – 61 food inspection violations

Find the top 20 in Lake County here:
https://www.cleveland.com/data/2023/06/what-are-the-20-lake-county-restaurants-with-the-most-food-inspection-violations-in-2022-2023.html

Find the list for other counties here:
https://www.cleveland.com/data/2023/05/how-clevelandcom-determines-which-businesses-are-listed-in-the-food-inspection-series.html

The good thing is that the restaurants I frequent aren’t on the lists. If any were, yeah, there are plenty of other places to go.

BILL CREEP
When my bills creep up I contact the vendor to see if they can drop the price of the bill. If I don’t get anywhere with the customer service rep I ask for the manager or retention department. I let them know about how their competition offers better pricing and/or services and also that I may just cancel what I have. That sets the wheels in motion to get to the right person that has authorization to get me a better deal. Recently, it worked better than I thought.

My AT&T bill jumped $5. Usually, once a year I have to call to get them to put a credit back on or some other discount. The lady that answered my call asked how my day was going. I said ok. She said she will try to make it better. After having to slowly repeat my phone number around 4 times because she wasn’t listening she blew it on trying to make it better.

She said she could give me a $5 discount if I set up my account as auto-pay. I told her I didn’t want to set it up as auto-pay because should they accidentally charge me a huge wrong amount I didn’t want to have it paid through auto-pay making it harder to get a credit on it. That’s when I went into my schpiel about cancelling the service and how the competition was better and wanting to speak to a manager or the Retention Department.

She tried to get me to do the auto-pay again, but I wasn’t biting. She sent me over to the manager.

The rep first mentioned the $5 discount and then tried to get me to ok them selling me more services which I already said no to on the initial prompts. I told him no. He mentioned how they could do $20 off with a new service. I said I wanted $20 off the bill, but I didn’t want any new service so that was a no go. I know they are reading off scripted prompts and just have to go through the motions until I get to some meat with the negotiations. He then said he could do a free month of internet! Yesiree! That is half the bill. Granted it is only one month, but I will call again next month to beat them up again.

The rep kept telling me the wrong amount I owed to pay the rest of the bill. He finally figured it was easier to just tell me I owed $40, so he went with that.

He then had his manager talk to me. The manager must have been listening to the call. He asked me to rate the rep in one word like “awesome”. I said “acceptable”.

I asked the rep to send me an email to tell me what I owe this month. He sent the message and it said I will owe about 39,75 dollars. Yes, there was a comma in the amount and it said ‘about’. Foreign countries sometimes use commas instead of decimals with their currency. The “about” had me concerned because it still didn’t show an exact amount. The next day the bill updated with the credit and it was $38.75. Bill haggling is always an adventure.

REASSESSMENT
If you had to find the issues most deeply troubling you what would they be? Financial? Relationship? Physical? Work Environment? Now, if the worst one was fixed, would it make a huge difference in your life? There is someone in this world going through the exact same thing you are. Maybe even worse. There is also someone in this world that got through it. What was their fix?

Not often do we stop ourselves to think of our situations in a different light. We usually transfix our thoughts into the same patterns. We put blame on the same things. However, what if if those beliefs were wrong? Would looking a little deeper find that the approach and beliefs we thought were legit were not supported by facts, but maybe suppositions. Did you ever get the other side of the story or search for new answers?

There are also reasons bad things fester. We are afraid of taking that first step. Pride or fear might get in the way. We are creatures of habit and like to avoid change. There is a comfort in routine. There is also no growth and increased potential for happiness, if we keep things status quo. We also know that changes can make things worse. So we stick to what we have.

Here’s an assignment. Who is the person you most admire? Next, find out their life history (Wikipedia is a good source, if they are famous). Did they have obstacles in their life? Did they continue to pursue what they wanted even though they were met with failure multiple times? Were you surprised to find out how many tough twists and turns they had in their life? For instance, Michael Jordan of NBA fame didn’t make his Varsity basketball team as a sophmore. After his father was murdered he quit basketball because he lost the desire to play. Instead, he tried to make a Major League Baseball team, but didn’t do well enough in minor league baseball to advance. He went back to the NBA and won three more championships. His teammate, Scottie Pippen, called Jordan a “horrible player” even though he won 6 NBA Championships. Lots of drama there.

Another angle is to find someone that you think has it all together and super happy. Was their life all peaches and cream? Or was their attitude about life very positive even though they experienced many struggles. Did they roll with the punches and make the best of every situation?

Success also means a lot of hard work. To get what you want sometimes involves a lot of effort. Goals aren’t met unless they are made. Is that your next step?
