A U.S. Energy Information Administration says natural gas bills in the Midwest should be about 21% cheaper nationally this winter compared to last year. They also stated homes that use electricity for heat won’t see much in the way of savings. Prices can change if a milder or more severe winter come to fruition.

Around 46% of homes in the U.S. use natural gas as their primary heat source, and 41% use electricity. The percentage of homes that use natural gas is much higher in Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Indiana.

Walgreens pharmacy workers struck for 5 days this past week. Recently, CVS Pharmacy workers struck in the Kansas City area. Workers for both were fed up with under-staffing, putting profits over people and safety, poor pay, and shoddy treatment. Workers in other industries are also feeling the same.

The other year pharmacies started to close from 1:30 to 2:00 just so that the workers there could get a lunch break. Otherwise, they would just work through it. By state law stores must give a lunch break with an 8 hour workday. The lack of time to take a lunch was the canary in the coalmine for these pharmacies.

Workers are also fed up with their wages not keeping up with inflation while companies make record profits. This comes after pay cuts or limited or no raises during to the Pandemic. Strikes are happening in many industries including automotive, entertainment and hospitals because of the disparity.

Other industries, especially hospitals, restaurants, retail, and nursing homes suffer from the same under-staffing and issues. Turnover is high. Until they address the issues will persist, but many businesses are stuck thinking they can still take advantage of workers. The latest data shows 9.6 million job openings and 6.4 million unemployed people, so there are not enough people for available jobs. With record low unemployment, workers have the upper hand now.

Elon Musk, not realizing the paradigm has shifted, decided to make a power play and got rid of most of his workers at the old Twitter (now X) and that platform has struggled ever since. He even demanded his employees work 80 hours a week at high intensity or leave. Fortune reported the value of the company has decreased from around $44 billion to around $4 billion after he bought the company and made the demands. Oops. Somebody needs to wake up and read the room.

Another example is where the city of Cleveland found that hiring and keeping police was difficult. To stem the tide they increased pay and added bonuses which resulted in a 45% increase in applications. Actual hires and the number of police in the workforce will be a barometer to measure whether the efforts worked.

“People don’t want to work” is the refrain heard often. But is that the case? Government handouts that began during the Pandemic have stopped for some time. If prices are so high with inflation, people will need a source of income. The large Baby Boomer population naturally retiring in droves can explain some of the reason workers are hard to find. The increase in overdose deaths and over 1 million dying from Covid can explain the lower number of available workers too. Some might resort to crime to get what they need and that has happened in some areas in the country. In past years I knew of people needing jobs because they got laid off, but now I don’t think I know of anyone seeking employment…if anything, people I know looking for jobs already have one and just want to get a new one to get out of a bad environment/pay.

Companies have had it good for so long, but with record low unemployment and record profits their resistance to paying workers appropriate wages and providing a good working environment rings hollow. A threat of using robots and AI can be used, but there are issues with each and they can be costly and subject to failure. The threat of robots taking jobs has been around for decades and it hasn’t wholly happened. The Roaring 20’s happened a century ago…might we be line for another Roaring 20’s for workers?

Cramp Concoction

I’ve played volleyball ever since I took up the sport for Corporate Challenge back in the early 90s. I play one night a week. At times it was twice a week. Indoor for the fall and winter and sand for summer. I have to brag a little. The past 4 sessions we have been in the Championship for each, winning three of them. This season we are 12- 0 in individual games so far, so off to a good start. But my body has been letting me know I have another opponent.

I’ve always had an issue with cramps. The playoffs get pretty intense. Lots of sweating and challenging of the muscles. To repel cramps the last session I drank a concoction that I was hoping would stave off any cramps. I drank a nasty combination of apple cider vinegar, pickle juice and topped it off with mustard. I usually have bananas the day of the game. I took some magnesium before playing. All remedies I’ve heard stunt cramps. It didn’t work as I cramped up during the Championship game. I drank plenty of electrolyte water too. I may have found a possible solution with Pedialyte which has more potassium than other drinks.

So if you know of any magical potion that stops cramps let me know. These old bones need everything it can get. Send me your favorite cramp recipes!
