Dominion Energy is offering customers a free home energy assessment in November by a neutral third party called CLEAResult. The cost is normally $25. With winter around the corner it’s a great time to do an energy audit and find where heat is being lost in your home.
The audit involves several steps, including a blower test to see how air tight the home is, and using a thermal camera to see where cold air may be entering the home. An auditor will also check to common areas to see if they’re well insulated. And after the audit, homeowners are given a detailed report.
Auditors can also recommend rebates that are available, and give the homeowner free energy-savings products such as high-efficiency shower heads, carbon monoxide detectors and insulation for water heater pipes.

ITS NOT A DEAL
Black Friday is a great time to get deals, but is it really? Many stores offer the same discounts that can be had throughout the year. Many times I find better deals outside of the Black Friday/Cyber Monday season. WalletHub also found that 35% of items will offer no savings compared to their pre-Black Friday prices this year (https://wallethub.com/edu/best-worst-items-for-black-friday/16901).
One gimmick to look out for is the “best sale of the season” promo. It also means it’s not the best deal of the year.
Another is the BOGO50% off deal. In reality, it’s 25% off each item. A straight BOGO deal is good, but not the watered down BOGO25% to 75% off deals.
Deals under 50% off are meh. You can find those kind of deals all year round. When it’s 70% off or more then now we’re talking. However, depending on the item it may be a deal at a lesser percent. For instance, furniture and computers don’t get discounted a ton unless it’s a model end-of-life clearance.
DOLLAR GENERAL OVERPRICING VERDICT
Ohio settled a lawsuit against Dollar General for overpricing products. They will owe $1 million ($750K to Foodbanks) along with rules that will keep them on the straight and narrow to make sure their prices are as advertised in their nearly 1,000 stores in Ohio. None of the verdict proceeds will go to customers that were overcharged.
In the agreement Dollar General must “provide sufficient coverage for employees to update shelf tags” when prices change, and keep records to prove that the work is being done. Any price tag found to be incorrect must be replaced within 24 hours, and customers must be charged the correct price in the meantime. Stores will post signs to communicate the policy. At least once every month and a half, a district manager must conduct a price check for at least 25 randomly-selected items in each store. County government auditors will conduct their own price checks in the meantime. And if any Dollar General store fails those checks three times in a row, “that specific retail location shall complete a full-store assessment in which every shelf tag price must undergo a price check.”
The terms of the agreement will remain in place for the next four years. Now if they can only keep their stores neat and orderly.
GIANT EAGLE FUELPERKS MIGRATING TO MYPERKS
Giant Eagle is changing their Fuelperks program. All customers will be switched to myPerks on January 25th. In a nutshell, the new MyPerks reward will save you less. They are giving shoppers more “options” with the new program, but the options will save you less money. For instance, whereas it took 50 Perks ($50 spent) to get 10 cents off per gallon it will now take 100 Perks ($100 spent) to get 10 cents off per gallon.
Giant Eagle has been struggling, as evidenced by the dismissal in March of former CEO Laura Shapira Karet, the last of her family’s role in leading the company. Giant Eagle reportedly fell behind Walmart in its home market of Pittsburgh. To counter the drop they said they dropped prices and froze them on nearly 800 items by an average of nearly 20%.
So now they are tweaking their rewards program to up their profits and confuse shoppers enough to think these new options are “better”. During the Pandemic their deals were lame. In the past month I’ve noticed they’ve had some great deals on a handful of items. Their prices are still viewed as being high. Their “above average deals” were missing for so long it will be hard for them to lose that label. Not to mention they got rid of sales ads sent to homes in the Cleveland area. It negatively affected them enough that they brought them back. Plus, getting rid of double coupons didn’t help. However, there aren’t enough food coupons to even double should they bring them back.
They tried hard to get people to switch on their own from Fuelperks to myPerks, but the incentives weren’t good enough because in the end the myPerks program wasn’t any better than Fuelperks. Now they are forcing it on everyone and that will just upset customers even more.

PAY IT BACKWARD
I was at Taco Bell waiting to order a couple chalupas using a BOGO Our Town coupon. I noticed the guy in front of me had a big order as I pulled up to the drive-thru board to order myself. He took a little longer to order, but no biggee.
As I pulled up to the window to pay they tell me the guy ahead of me paid for my order because his order took so long. That was the first time that ever happened to me that someone paid for my meal at a drive-thru. Maybe someone did it for him and he decided to do it himself. The protocol would be for me to pay it forward. Instead I got another pay it backward!
We were at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse to see Depeche Mode in concert. We were in line to get their super expensive drinks before the concert started. There was one person in line in front of me. After they got their drinks and paid I went to step forward to order, but a lady swooped in front of me and placed her order. I think I said woah and just let it be. Well, the husband of the lady noticed and said he would pay for our round! I told him no he didn’t have to multiple times. He insisted. He said he got the tickets free, so he was good. Well, ok, but these drinks are around $15 or more for a single drink!
Maybe I’m getting good karma back for the recent volunteer event I did with Humble Design. Either way, I’m due to pay it forward…or is it backward?
