GAS $2.09 PER GALLON
Gas prices keep going down! The new Sheetz at 6200 Brookpark Rd in Cleveland is now selling gas for $2.09! Other gas stations in the area dropped their prices too. The Ridge Road GetGo was at $2.09 with Advantage Pay/My Perks ($2.39 without).
The east side is having some price wars too. Sheetz in Willoughby Hills is now $2.09 per gallon. Painesville Sheetz is $2.09 per gallon. Mentor Reynolds Road GetGo is at $2.23 with Advantage Pay or $2.33 without. Madison GetGo is at $2.27 per gallon or $2.17 with Advantage Pay. Most gas stations in competitive areas are $2.49 and below in the Lake County. E88 gas at Sheetz is at $1.99 per gallon at some gas stations. The “Grand Opening prices” tend to last about a month before they start to go back to normal. Spurring it is a ton of new Sheetz locations, including Willoughby Hills, Painesville, and Madison.
Besides additional competition, another reason the price is down is because the holidays have ended and that’s when demand goes down (it will go back up when the weather gets warmer). Plus the US is pumping a record amount of oil! It’s producing about 13.5 million barrels of crude oil per day, more than it ever has. It’s even millions of gallons more than Saudi Arabia or Russia is pumping.
Also, Angola left OPEC after output quota disputes. They wanted to raise production rather than decrease output as the other members of OPEC wanted. More supply meant prices goes down. The turmoil in the Middle East can change all of it on a dime.

POSTAGE STAMP PRICE INCREASE
The Postal Service will implement price increases on Jan. 21, 2024. The cost of mailing a 1-ounce letter will rise from 66 cents to 68 cents. Other shipping rates will increase too. Buy gift cards at Giant Eagle to earn Perks for stores that sell stamps (OfficeMax, Staples, etc) to use for purchase of stamps.

GIANT EAGLE SKIMMERS
If you shopped at some local Giant Eagle stores, you may have been skimmed. A skimmer is a device inserted by crooks into the payment devices at stores where you slide your credit or debit card for payment. The skimmer “skims” your card data and a small camera films you entering your pin number. Crooks use the card data to fraudulently purchase items. To protect yourself It’s a good habit to check your credit card bills monthly to make sure there were no illicit charges. Typically, you have only 60 days to dispute charges on your credit card.
Customers that have chips in their cards, which are inserted and not swiped, should not be affected.
Giant Eagle said the first device was found at a store in Columbus on Nov. 3. They found four more skimmers at Cleveland area stores, with the last being found on Nov. 9. They checked all the payment pads at all stores after that and it took some time to analyze all of them.
The skimmer devices were found and removed at the following stores.

SUPPLY AND DEMAND AND THE TAXI DRIVER
On our trip back home from the Caribbean we had to take a taxi. The driver was complaining about gas prices. He said that the prices should be lower because so many people want gas. His thinking was that with more people buying gas it meant that the price would lower just like buying in bulk at a Warehouse Club. That’s where he is mistaken. I’m sure if ten customers were waiting to get a taxi ride by him, he wouldn’t drop his price.
It’s purely about supply and demand. When OPEC met the other month they wanted to cut back production. Lower supply meant prices would go up. Russia is part of OPEC+ and with their economy in shambles they wanted to make more money to help their economy and increasing gas prices would help them. Their plan failed when Angola decided they no longer wanted to be part of OPEC because they wanted to increase production.
I reminded him that unemployment was over 14% and the stock market dipped to 19,000 (currently over 37,000) when gas prices last dove to under $2 in 2020. We were dealing with the Covid Pandemic and tons of people lost their job. Most people were working remote from home, so they didn’t need gas to drive to work. Demand decreased substantially which meant prices would decrease and supplies would increase because less people were buying gas.
Same goes for the huge increase in inflation this past year. Supplies were still down as companies ramped up production. Hiring enough workers was still an issue for many companies, so they couldn’t produce enough supply to meet demand thus increasing prices. Demand was increasing heavily because people were back working as the unemployment rate was at record lows. The Fed had to increase interest rates to tamp down demand and slow down the economy, otherwise inflation would increase even more. High interest rates for loans and mortgages helped slow the economy enough that it looks like we avoided a recession and instead had a soft landing.
The days of free money with the Fed’s zero percent interest rates are over and super low inflation, even below 0%, that we saw around 2015, so I don’t expect mortgage and credit card rates to go back down to the low rates in the past. People will have to become more diligent with paying off their credit cards to avoid the higher rates.
Once the Fed interest rates go down which is being predicted to happen soon, CD and saving rates will also go down, so if that happens, now is probably a good time to lock in CDs long term. Lower interest rates means people will pay less for credit card debt and mortgage rates. Businesses will take on more business loans. So there is a good chance the economy will boom now that the supply chain resources are back to normal. I can see an issue with getting enough workers though if the economy takes off. There are just not enough workers for available jobs. It’s almost 2 jobs for every person looking for a job now. If the economy gets too hot, inflation could increase again, so it will be a delicate balance.
The Fed typically wants inflation at 2%. It’s around 3% now after jumping up as high as 9% last year, so about normal. It’s year-over-year increases so, in other words, prices still stayed high. However, I’m seeing sale prices that reflect prices pre-Pandemic, so maybe as people refrain from higher priced items, it will lessen demand for them and thus decrease prices. So how about not eating lobster the next three months so that we can get them for a quarter!
