PAY BACK
Workers Owed Wages, a search tool created by the U.S. Labor Department, will find out if you are owed money by a previous employer. Just type in your name and employer and it will let you know if you’re owed money. In Ohio, 4,200 workers are owed more than $1.7 million. Much of this money is back wages, like a last paycheck that wasn’t paid to a person. In many cases, employees change jobs or addresses and can’t be notified. The money is then forwarded to the wage and hour division, which can hold it for three years.

BOGUS HAPPY HOURS
I came across a couple bogus happy hours recently. The first one had appetizers deals listed on their happy hour menu. Some great deals that were about half off, but were they half the portion too?? Knowing that some restaurants pull this trick, I started asking questions. I asked if the happy hour food items were full-sized. She said no, it’s half the size. So in other words, I get half the item and at more than half the price. Where’s the deal there!? But it gets worse.
For two crab cakes on the regular menu the cost is $22 and for $12 I get one crab cake on the happy hour menu. Well, isn’t that special… It costs more for each crab cake on happy hour! Orchid House in Aurora needs to do better. I will have to say their cocktails on happy hour were delicious. The place was remodeled from the last time I was there. I liked aspects of the old place better, but the new one was nice too. I went there when it was Dankarona Winery. They should have kept the old place as is when it was Thorncreek and just built a brand new place somewhere else for the money they put into it. Sometimes you have to leave well enough alone. When businesses put so much cash into the facility and all they sometimes end up trying to recoup the money with higher prices…or bogus happy hour deals.
The other one with an issue was a place that showed a happy hour on their web-site. We get there and they said they don’t do happy hour anymore. They said their web-site needs to be updated and there is some issue with the person that updates it. An advertised deal should be honored. They were still doing a wine special though, so we got a glass and skedaddled. If I was in more of an ornery mood I would have pushed them to honor any of the deals that were still online on their web-site. It was 1330 on the River on the East Bank of the Flats.

WHICH SIDE ARE YOU ON?
With the New Year it’s a good time to reflect on our own foibles and adjust where needed. Everyone has flaws. We are the product of our environment of which can lead to blind spots. Some are easier to fix than others.
First, they need to be recognized in order to fix them. It’s good to have people around you that are honest and care enough to tell you. Some people get upset when they are told of their flaws – sometimes it’s the way it’s being said, but not always. For instance, ‘You are an idiot’ is not helpful. ‘Did you know you are forgetting to flush the toilet?’ is a softer approach. Stewing over when someone calls you out and waiting to say your are sorry can lead to more issues too. However, it’s better than not saying it at all.

WAIT FOR IT
Did you ever notice that some stores will send you deals the longer you don’t shop there? Some will send you “we miss you” coupons or discounts to get you back in the store.
Gas stations tend to offer deals for rewards members that don’t fill up at the station for some time. It’s almost like ignoring a boyfriend or girlfriend to the point they pay more attention to you. Not that it’s healthy, but kind of the same concept. It’s like managed ghosting.
The deals at CVS, Walgreens, and Rite-Aid have waned to the point I don’t buy as much there as I did in the past. After they had to pay billions after losing the Opiod lawsuit they now have to recoup their money, so their rewards deals have been watered down. CVS still sends me $20 off $80 coupons and the like, not realizing I rarely spend that much there anymore. Let’s see what happens when I stop shopping there for some time! Maybe they will take me out to dinner at a fancy restaurant and lavish me with their finest offering they sell like 20 packs of Bounty and give it to me for free. I’m waiting…
