INFLATION & YOUR WAGES
I started working for the man when I was 10 years old. It was a paper route and I made pennies for each paper I delivered. My first job where I received a paycheck I got $3.35 an hour. After inflation, it equates to $10.51 an hour in today’s wages. At $3.35 an hour it seems a far cry from $10.51, but after 40 years it shows how the $11 or so now being paid at retail shops and restaurants isn’t a ton more than the measly $3.35 an hour I got back in the day.

In recent years the lowest annual inflation rate happened in 2015 when it was .12%. If you made a standard 3% raise that year, your earning power would have grown.

Companies run the risk of not being able to find workers if they try to replace workers with the same wages when they haven’t paid their workers with wages that have kept up with inflation. Workers applying for the job will most likely find the companies wages aren’t competitive. Hence the reason many companies are now offering decent pay at the lower rungs of the wage scale, since they can’t find enough workers for the pay. Businesses got away with having plenty of cheap labor in past years, but not anymore.

The average reservation wage, the lowest annual pay that workers would accept to take a new job, increased to $78,645 in 2023, according to the New York Fed’s most recent Survey of Consumer Expectations. That’s up from about $72,900 a year earlier and $69,000 in July 2021. Workers with a college degree now expect $98,600 annually to accept a new job, compared with an average $63,300 for those who don’t have one. Median rather than average amounts may be more reasonable, but still sobering numbers for employers.

The number of unemployed people per open job was nearly 7 to 1 during the Great Recession of 2009. It dropped steadily up until it was 1 for 1 then jumped during the Pandemic to 5 unemployed people per available job. Currently, there are nearly 2 available jobs per unemployed person. There are now tons more jobs per unemployed people. Find the historical chart at: https://www.bls.gov/charts/job-openings-and-labor-turnover/unemp-per-job-opening.htm

For those who haven’t received raises in years you can see how much you could’ve earned if your wages kept up with inflation using a calculator on the following link.

STORE GRADES
It’s time for the annual Store Grades. Most stores saw their grade unchanged or moving down, a trend that’s been happening for years. Many stores didn’t improve their rewards programs or sales to entice customers to shop at their stores. Inflation caused a lot of prices to rise, so even sale prices were high. The Opiod lawsuit that CVS, Rite Aid and Walgreens lost I’m sure was a major reason why their rewards deals got worse. CVS and Walgreens paid $10 billion while Rite Aid settled for millions before they went bankrupt.

The grades are weighted most on which have the best deals, but also take into consideration service, staffing, rewards programs, coupon policies, and other money-saving factors. In years past I have given stores an A grade, but the reduction in freebies and tightening couponing rules have dropped grades, so none earned higher than a B-. Gone are the double coupon days and that brought grades down too. Some stores have sales and rewards programs while others don’t (Marcs & Walmart), so that can affect their grade.

One trend that continued was stores not mailing ads and/or even putting ads in their stores or in newspapers. Customers now have to fumble through their smartphone or PC to dig through the deals (find ads for stores at https://www.flipp.com). It’s unfortunate because going through a paper ad is much easier and quicker than going through one on an electronic device.

With Meijer and Aldi opening more stores it has improved competition. Dollar stores keep popping up, but now that most charge $1.25 or more they aren’t as good of a value as they were in the past. Hopefully as the economy continues to settle down, stores will have to fight for more customers and offer better rewards and deals. One store making changes is Giant Eagle. Towards the end of last year Giant Eagle started to throw some deals unlike before (Wednesday only deals) and they are also changing their Perks program. Their change to MyPerks for all shoppers will determine how well they score next year, as some features of it are worse than their previous Perks program.

Without further adieu here are this year’s Store Grades:

Limited deals.
No double coupons.
No gas rewards.
They are all about quality, but a box of Cheerios is the same at Marcs, Giant Eagle, Dollar Stores, etc. Aside from the bakery, prepared foods, and meats, the rest of what they sell for the most part is just like any other store. But if you did a blind taste test on even those items, could you figure out which store they came from?

MARCS: C-

Pros:
Ok everyday low prices (used to be better).
Ok produce prices (used to be better).
2% off on gift cards.
Great closeout deals. Never know what ‘made in China’ deal you’ll find!
Locally owned.
Discounted newspapers.
They now take credit cards.
Some hot deals in ad.
eCoupons on site.
Usually have good dairy deals, especially cheese.
Decent flower prices.
Good discounnts on expiring produce.

Cons:
No super deals on a consistent basis.
No real weekly sales, just everyday prices.
No Rewards program.
Meat quality questionable.
No double coupons.
Some stores need spiffying up.
No more Speedway gift card deal.

Can find 75% and 90% off clearance items every so often.
Lots of eCoupons.
Clearance make-up up to 90% off.
Some great deals on laundry detergent.

Cons:
Hardly any great deals.
Very few Register Rewards deals unless you need toothpaste.
Can’t earn Balance Rewards points and redeem them at the same time.
Register Reward is considered a manufacturer coupon.
Coupons beep frequently at the register due to issues with their computer system reading coupons.
No Register Reward or additional Balance Reward deals for Thanksgiving week/Black Friday deals.
Register Rewards expire too quick.
The regular price on items are way over-priced.

WAL-MART: C-

Pros:
They price match their Walmart.com prices.
Have just about everything you need sold at the store.
Great for people watching.
New Wal-Mart+ program offers perks for shoppers that don’t want to go into the store.
Everyday prices are ok.

Some decent clearance deals.

Cons:
Although their score improved, Walmart has consistently placed last among department and discount stores in the American Customer Satisfaction Index. So it’s no wonder customers are upset about shelves not being stocked and not enough cashiers at Wal-mart.
No real weekly sales, just everyday prices.
Everyday low prices not as good as it used to be.
Very high produce prices.
They don’t double coupons.
Their fuel reward program isn’t very good.
No other reward programs.
Shelves are usually not fully stocked.
Not enough employees at registers, etc.
Behemoth stores are way too big – if you forget something you have to take a commuter plane just to get to the other side of the store
Too much of what they sell is from China when it used to be mostly U.S. products.
They did away with ad price matching.
Don’t put ads in newspapers .
No more Savings Catcher program.
No more coupon overage (credit).

WAREHOUSE CLUBS: C-

Pros:
Decent quality, especially the Kirkland brand at Costco.
Lots of freebie food stations.
Costco treats their employees right.
Good deals on non-grocery items like tires and some on travel and other items.
Some offer store coupons.
Some offer a rebate after the year that ends up covering the cost of your membership.
Can always find Groupon membership deal.
Gas stations with prices lower than competition.

Cons:
You have to pay to shop there.
You have to buy in humongous bulk sizes, much of which may get thrown out because it spoils before getting used. Great for the Octomom and the Waltons, but not single people.
Most don’t take manufacturer coupons (BJ’s does).
No ads in newspapers.

DAVES SUPERMARKET: D+

Pros:
Stores are sized for easy in and out.

Send 20% or 25% bonus rewards coupons in the mail.
Sometimes send $10 of $XX purchase coupons in the mail.
Can use rewards on stamps.
Coupons on pickup bag with items purchased online.

Cons:
Fewer Rewards deals than in the past.
The Rewards value gets adjusted if coupons or additional discounts are used.
No deals over Black Friday like there were in the past.
No more paper deals that were around $10 after rewards for a case of paper.
School deals were very limited this past year.
Less $X off $X deals.
Coupons very restrictive.
Clearance prices high.

Everyday prices are high.

SAVE-A-LOT: D+

Pros:
Some decent deals..
Can find great deals on meat such as $4.99/lb for T-Bone steaks.
Similar to Aldi in format, but unlike Aldi, they take coupons.
Convenient.
Sometimes offer $5 off $25 coupons.
They offer coupons at times.

Cons:
Minimal sale items.
Mostly sell store brands.
No loyalty reward programs or other perks.
Selection is minimal.
Sales ads have shrunk.

STAPLES: D-

Pros:
Online coupons.
Usually have rewards for toner purchases.

Cons:
A lot less deals again than in the past.
School deals were minimal as compared to years past.
No more Staples Rewards deals and Easy Rebates.

Some local grocery stores have only one or two stores in the area, so they are too small to list their pros and cons and all, but I’ll give them a grade anyway since I can assess how good their weekly deals and all have been. Here they are:

Sweetberry: B-
Produce Place Market: B-
Lucky’s Market: C-
