ONE AND DONE
Giant Eagle has had some great one day deals. Apparently too good. Plus there is a catch with the deal. For instance, they had pies, apple and pot pies, on sale for $3.14 on Pi Day, 3/14. Did they have them in stock when I went to get some after work? Nope. The one store told me all 450 they had were gone in the morning.
Now here’s the catch. No rainchecks. Since it’s a one day deal, they don’t offer rain checks. So once they’re out, they’re out.
They also ran out of Drumstick cones that were buy 2 get 1 free last week. They had them stocked day one, but not after those were sold out. It wasn’t a one day deal, but still no rainchecks. Giant Eagle used to offer rain checks, but no more. The customer service rep told me they tried to order more, but the trucks never came with the stock.
They either need to offer rain checks or have enough in stock to not sell out by morning or soon after. It makes them seem a bit shady to offer the great deals and not have enough in stock and not offering rainchecks.
CD RATES & INFLATION
With plans by the Fed to lower interest rates it has caused CD interest rates to go down. Rates above 5% for one year or longer are harder to find, so it’s a good time to lock in rates while they are still available. There’s a chance rates could spike if the economy gets heated up again and the Fed decides to increase rates again, but that seems to be unlikely. Then again, economists were predicting a recession the past few years and that hasn’t happened. Had a recession happened the U.S. would’ve seen inflation go down naturally as it did in 2020 and 2009, the latest years when a recession occurred.
As an example of supply and demand affecting inflation, gas prices will increase because warmer weather leads to increased gas usage thus increasing prices which in turn increases inflation. That’s unless OPEC decides to increase production. The U.S. already has record gas production, but Russia is trying to keep prices high to support their war in Ukraine, so they’ve been trying to decrease production.
Speaking of Russia, they’ve been talking about using nuclear weapons and that could make a mess of the world economy and especially if they attack a NATO country. WWIII would happen if Russia decides to take those steps. China and North Korea were having joint military exercises with Russia, so best to keep an eye on all of them going forward. There’s a strategic reason why the U.S. has military bases in countries across the world. Best to keep enemies in check. Let’s hope nothing crazy happens.
Inflation was very high in countries across the world this past year or two. The U.S. recovered more quickly than most other nations. In Argentina inflation is at 276% and we’re at around 3%! The Fed raised rates 11 times during 2022 through 2023 to fight inflation which caused CD and saving interest rates to increase. Inflation is around 3% which isn’t far from the 2% target the Fed tries to maintain. If inflation is very low it also means the economy isn’t doing well. After the Great Recession of 2009 inflation continued to drop and in 2015 it even went below 0%! The Fed lowered interest rates to 0% to spur the economy…opposite of what they are trying to do now because the economy is doing well with low unemployment and the stock market hitting record highs.
The main reason inflation jumped the other year to around 9% was due to the supply chain being out of whack. After the Pandemic companies were not prepared to ramp up production. Demand increased a ton as everyone went back to work and supply was low making it a perfect formula for prices to increase. Conversely, gas prices were low in 2020 because unemployment was nearly 15% and if people were working, they worked from home so they didn’t need as much gas. Low demand and high supply caused gas prices to decrease. The Fed is trying to decrease demand by slowing down the economy with high interest rates, meaning mortgage rates, credit card rates and loans are also high. But it’s good for savers as CD and interest rates are high.
RIP ERIC CARMEN
Sad to see that Eric Carmen passed away. He was the legendary Cleveland-born lead singer of the Raspberries with hits including Go All the Way, Hungry Eyes, Never Gonna Fall in Love Again, All By My Self and others. He attended Brush High School and John Carrol University.
I met him one time while out shopping. I was at Rite Aid in Woodmere. I saw him and said, Hello Eric. He just looked at me. I think he didn’t want to be noticed as he just picked up a prescription. His huge orbit of hair was impressive. He had some great songs and I would’ve loved to chat with him, but I knew he was a bit of an introvert. One of my wife’s cousins played with him some in his Raspberries band.
I recently been wondering why he didn’t take up the mantle from Michael Stanley to be the rock star of the city after Michael passed. Eric didn’t do many concerts in his later years and kept to himself. Instead, he lived a quiet life in Gates Mills. His prerogative.
I would also see Michael Stanley every so often when I was shopping. He lived near me in Willoughby Hills. Saying hello to him elicited the same look and non-response. I get it. A famous person out and about doesn’t want to get noticed. There are crazy fans out there.
Rest in peace, Eric. Rock the heavens.
IF THE SHOE FITS
I used to buy most of my shoes at Kohls. I would usually only buy them if I could get them for less than $20. Meijer has taken over the mantle of my shoe provider and the last purchase I made was a doozy. And yeah, funny that I buy my shoes at a grocery store.
Meijer had an Extra 75% off select clearance shoes! Not 75% off, but an Extra 75% off their clearance price. I ended up getting some winter boots for $6.50 that were originally $65. One thing to check on these type of sales is the color of the price tag. The ‘Extra off’ deals are only for select colored stickers. Sometimes it’s pink, blue or red.
If I could fit in sizes 4 to 9 I would’ve bought more shoes, but I’m a size 11. Heck, at these prices I’d smash my foot into a smaller size it’s such a good deal. I’d just trim my toenails until they fit.
