CLEVELAND FLAG
This summer a group proposed changing the city flag of Cleveland and they had a contest to get people to submit entries of their flag designs at https://www.cleflag.org/. I entered a submission. Only 3 out of the hundreds got picked to vote on. Unfortunately, mine didn’t make the cut. The ones that did seemed to be from the same person since they have the same weird star on each of the submissions.

Above is my submission. The rules were to avoid using words on the flag and they wanted a limited numbers of colors. I added the word “Cleveland” on my entry since it seemed like it needed it, but the ones selected they didn’t have any wording on them. Most city and country flags, or at least the newer versions, don’t have much, if any, wording on them. The symbolism is supposed to supplant any need for words. Anyway, below is a description of why I used the symbols that I did.

The design and colors of the Cleveland flag have meanings behind them. The four stripes of the flag represent music bars. It’s fitting with Cleveland being the home of the Rock Hall of Fame and world-renown Cleveland Orchestra plus the word rock-n-roll was coined here.

The triangle is a nod to the Rock Hall iconic architecture. A triangle is also representative of spiritual meaning. Cleveland has a melting pot of people that have brought many religions to the city and in doing so dotting the skyline with churches found across the city. Tremont has 26 different churches within one square mile, the largest concentration of historic churches in the country.

The red triangle resembles a cape, Superman’s cape. Superman, Cleveland’s most famous personality, was created by Cleveland residents Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster (they are raising funds to build a Superman statue at https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-clevelands-superman-statue-project). It embodies the strength and resilience of the community that has endured its ups and downs, yet points positively upward.

The triangle also resembles a walkway of which many nationalities were led to Cleveland. It symbolizes the beautiful and unique Cultural Gardens built by those that have settled here.

The green semi-circle (appropriately using Emerald for the Pantone Matching System color) represents the “Emerald necklace”, our impressive park system hugging the city with its natural beauty. It also is in the shape of C for Cleveland and with it Cleveland can be spelled using the triangle lines. In the submission the name Cleveland in the middle of the flag is 17 mm tall and in 96 font, combined, is the year the city was founded.

The colors of the stripes on the flag have meanings that Clevelanders would understand. The fiery red color highlights the amazing sunrises and sunsets that dazzles our skies. They also remind us that our river caught fire, so we are to be vigilant with our resources. Clevelanders have a great sense of humor and take the burning river in stride. We can be the brunt of jokes so we have developed some great comedians, including Bob Hope, Arsenio Hall, and Drew Carey.

The blue symbolizes Lake Erie and the Cuyahoga river that envelopes the city. They’re gateways to our city and help feed our industry with ships bringing in resources to aid in manufacturing. Many of industries giants started here in Cleveland, including Sherwin Williams, Standard Oil, Eaton, TRW, Parker-Hannifin, Cleveland Cliffs, and Republic Steel.

Cleveland was known as the Forest City, so green embodies our past and future as the city strives to return to it’s roots of a green city, helping the environment. The Cleveland Metroparks system is one of the best in the world. Green also represents money. A Federal Reserve bank is here in Cleveland, one of the small handful in the nation. It also represents the first U.S. billionaire, John D Rockefeller, who was from Cleveland and is buried in Lakeview Cemetery.

White also symbolizes hospitals of which Cleveland hospitals have a great worldwide reputation. Plus the white represents our transition to snow every winter, something every Clevelander knows all too well. The triangle points upward towards the green foliage, blue lake, and red sun of summer of which we wish lasted longer. Yet we enjoy all four seasons.

The red, white, and blue colors are part of Cleveland’s original flag thus bridging the two together. The same can be said of the city itself. Bridges join the west and east sides together bringing the city and its people together. Clevelanders are down-to-earth, friendly, funny, charitable, and loyal as shown by our affinity to our sports teams. We are also patient, waiting our lifetimes for our teams to win a championship.
