SELF CHECKOUTS
A 2026 Capital One Shopping Research study found that while 86% of consumers use self-checkout stations, theft increases up to 65% at self-checkouts compared to those manned by employees. More than 36 million Americans have reported stealing from self-checkout kiosks, the study found.
Some stores have taken out or scaling back their self checkouts, including WalMart, Costco, Five Below, Sam’s Club, and Dollar General. Some removed or don’t have them in high-theft stores.
Currently, self-checkout terminals make up approximately 38% of all checkout lanes in U.S. grocery stores. Additionally, a notable increase in adoption has been observed, with nearly 92% of shoppers reporting using self-checkout in 2025, up from 61% in 2021.
SCREWWORMS
A flesh-eating parasite not seen in Texas since 1966 is back—and it couldn’t come at a worse time. The USDA confirmed the first case of New World screwworm in Texas earlier this month, with additional cases following within days across multiple counties. Beef prices are already at a 70-year high, the US cattle herd is at its smallest since 1951, and a full outbreak could cost Texas alone $1.8 billion. Meanwhile, the federal programs that were supposed to keep the screwworm from ever reaching the US border were gutted by DOGE last year.
Screwworms are a parasitic fly that lays eggs in wounds of living warm-blooded animals. Within 12–24 hours, eggs hatch into larvae (maggots) that burrow into flesh, creating larger wounds and potentially leading to illness or death if untreated. Unlike most maggots, the larvae consume living tissue, not just dead flesh. Waiter, I’ll order the fish…
CREDIT CARD SETTLEMENT
Pending final approval, a $38 billion Visa and Mastercard settlement with merchants accusing the credit card networks of charging excessive processing fees has been approved by a U.S. district judge. A previous $30 billion settlement of the case was rejected two years ago in a different court. A class-action suit filed by more than 12 million merchants in 2005 accused Visa and Mastercard of charging excessive processing fees. In 2025, the credit card network charged merchants almost $119 billion in swipe fees.
The fees are typically 2% to 4% charges merchants pay when customers use a credit card. Many restaurants in turn charge customers for the fee unless they pay cash. Under the proposed settlement, Visa and Mastercard have agreed to lower the fees by .1% for five years. The standard consumer card fee would be capped at 1.25% for eight years.
Another provision of the settlement allows merchants to pass additional processing fees on to customers as surcharges on certain higher-fee cards, or offer discounts on lower swipe-fee cards.
STRATEGIC OIL RESERVES
The strategic petroleum reserve hit its lowest volumes since 1983 to below 350 million barrels to stop domestic fuel prices from further skyrocketing. The overall release of 172 million barrels over several months was approved and being depleted by 9 million barrels per week.
The 50-year-old Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which was initiated in the aftermath of the Arab oil embargo, received its first barrels of oil in 1977 and steadily grew through 1990 to nearly 600 million barrels. The SPR peaked at an all-time high of 726.6 million barrels in the final week of December 2009. The SPR is a series of 60 oil-filled, salt caverns in southern Texas and Louisiana.
The SPR can distribute oil within 13 days of a presidential decision, with a maximum drawdown rate of up to 4.4 million barrels per day.
China holds the world’s largest strategic and commercial oil inventory, with an estimated 1.4 billion barrels in reserve as of February—more than quadruple the U.S. reserves. The massive stockpile has insulated China from supply shortages, allowing it to lean on its reserves and drastically reduce its oil imports the last few months. At some point, China will have to start buying more oil again which will increase oil prices worldwide. China also is rapidly transitioning to electric vehicles. The majority of new car sales in China are EVs, but EVs still only represent about 15% of the vehicles on the roads in China.
Instead of mandating higher gas mileage, the U.S. government recently lowered fuel economy targets. Through proposed rule changes at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the fleet-wide average is set to about 34.5 mpg by 2031, a significant rollback from previous stricter mandates. I’m just glad we have a Prius with around 50 mpg.
FINGER LICKING BAD
The KFC in Willoughby closed. Surprised nobody wanted to buy it. However, the area became a hotbed of chicken restaurants with Dave’s Hot Chicken, Raising Canes, and a remodeled Chick-Fil-A competing against them. Mr Chicken closed nearby and turned into a oil change joint. The problem may have been more than just competition.
I’ve had problems with service there as I’ve had with have many fast food restaurants in recent years, including Burger King and Wendy’s. Slow service for one. Not enough workers or apathetic ones to cover all the customers. Bad managers? Poor pay? Bad ownership? That KFC was near me, so less chances I’ll get KFC’s $10 bucket special on Tuesdays.
LOST & FOUND
Recently, I found a couple things on the ground that people lost. One being a debit card and the other being badges to get into a building elevator and offices. Using both, I could’ve had some splendid times around town. The badges were that much more interesting because they were my wife’s boss’ badges!
I found the debit card on the sidewalk at Marc’s. I gave it to a worker. The customer I figure will retrace their steps to the stores they went to and ask around to see if anyone found it. They had a unique name, so good chance Marc’s will contact them if they don’t show up. One good deed for the day for me! I will use it when I’m in heaven when I present my good deed resume.
The badges I found in a parking garage where my wife works. I found the one badge and thought it was her boss since it had her pic on it, but it wasn’t exactly how she looks. Usually, badge pics are from years back and the person no longer looks like their badge pic. I’ve been at my company for over 36 years and decided to redo my badge because it was from 20 years earlier when I was a whippersnapper. Now it looks more like me and what work has done to me.
While I was outside my car I then noticed another badge wedged under my front tire. I pulled it out and it was my wife’s boss’ other badge. It would’ve been fun to surprise my wife…and her boss…by sneaking around the building and surprising her next to her cube and all the hoopla that would ensue, but it might not be good hoopla, so I bagged that thought.
Apparently, I parked right next to the boss’s car and she had thought she lost them when she changed purses. She thought they might be at her home. I also resisted drawing a mustache on her picture and black eye. She might put two and two together and figure it was me drawing it. I need my wife’s boss in her and my good graces. I’m looking forward to my next find. If you are reading this, please throw something valuable you have on the ground and I’ll see if I can find it!
