ING DIRECT
Get 1% APY interest on your savings account! ING Direct is FDIC insured just like all other banks, but this one is online. I use online banking and I can transfer money to a local bank in short time when I need it. It’s best for a savings account that you don’t need to touch since it has such a high interest rate compared to your local bank. The interest rate is as good as interest rates on a CD! Check you last bank statement and you’ll see you may be getting less than .25% interest from your local bank. Quadruple it and more with online banking! Other large online banks include Capital One, Ally Bank, and Discover Bank.

KROGER
A Facebook page has been put together to try and get Kroger to re-instate double/triple coupons in the Houston market where they were taken away. It can be found at https://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_150822764981356&ap=1 I hope they succeed like we did when we were able to get Giant Eagle to bring back double coupons back a few years ago.
If you noticed, this all happened after the Extreme Couponing show. Kroger can say all they want that they had these changes in place before the show aired, but the filming was done around September of last year, so Kroger knew what was being filmed and the effect it could have on people watching the show. They were afraid millions more people would save as much as they did on the show. They have nothing to be afraid of though. Most people don’t have the time or dedication it takes to save like us extreme couponers do even if they know they can save tons more money.
And that was another reason why I didn’t do the show. They didn’t want to show me or couponers in a good light. If they don’t show the people that donations help because of the many couponers that donate then they miss showing how some people are surviving just because of donations. And they needed to show someone that came from the depths of despair to get back on their feet using coupons. Bad TV? I think not. People love seeing rags to riches stories.
Kroger is also not matching up coupons with eOffers, so no stacking. Only one or the other will be taken off. That is how one gal saved tons that was on the show. Her store didn’t double but she was able to save tons when she used a coupon with an eOffer – unlimited. Now many stores are also limited how many coupons can be used per like item.
Before long the stores that water down their coupon savings will be no better than any other store. If they offer other ways to save it most likely will be based on spending more at the store – spend $50 get $5 off or gas perks savings. None of those programs will save you as much as coupons will. Most of their gas stations use ethanol, yet they are priced the same as non-ethanol gas as it is.
Wal-Mart is even suffering as many people are going to dollar stores over them. Wal-mart doesn’t have sales on items. They have an everyday low price. Most people have found that dollar stores get them as good of a deal as Wal-mart and those stores are more plentiful and more manageable.
So what will happen? Most likely Kroger will offer better coupon deals in cities where there is a lot of competition. But if people don’t stand up and let the stores that they need doubles, they may go away. But people will find other places to shop. Drug stores like CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens will do better since they are expanding their food sections and deals there. As the coupon deals go away, so will the shoppers go away. We have enough choices. People love doubles and stores that double. In these tough times we need more choices to save and not less.
GE
In spite of robust profits of $14.2 billion worldwide, GE (General Electric and not Giant Eagle) has calculated a corporate tax bill for 2010 that adds up to zero, via a creative series of tax referrals and revenue shifts. It was the second year in a row that they paid nothing in coporate taxes. GE has a 975-employee tax division, led by former Treasury official John Samuels. They did it by claiming a series of losses and deductions. They had a negative tax of 10.5 percent in 2009 and realized a $1.5 billion “tax benefit.” Umm, no wonder we have such a huge debt if companies like GE don’t pay taxes like the rest of us.
NOW HIRING
Monster says that Cleveland is the seventh most popular job market in the U.S., with more than 20,000 open positions available in Northeast Ohio – many of which are in technology (project managers, database administrators, computer support, and information researchers) and health care fields (nursing, pharmacy, occupational therapy, home health, and dental aids and assistants).
POTHOLES
Did you just drive your car through a pothole where it toured you through an underground world of mole men and Chinese speaking earthworms? Help the city fix the potholes by calling the Division of Street’s Pothole hotline line at 216-664-2510. Cities are usually liable for damage only if they have calls from people notifying them of the pothole. Save that hubcab of yours from skipping across the freeway!
LEGAL
Levi Strauss will pay $1 million in back wages to 596 employees after the government found overtime and record keeping violations.
Regal Cinemas were assessed $277,475 in civil penalties for allowing teens to perform hazardous jobs and work longer hours than allowed by the youth employment provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Dicks Sporting Goods settled a class-action lawsuit over wage and hour disputes, including overtime pay, for as much as $15 million.

Thanks Joe for the amazing pep talk at the Facebook page. I appreciate you taking the time to put the Kroger story on your blog. When it came time to fight a Giant Weasel, you knew how to lead us to victory. Thankfully, we are back to our much loved GE.
If we can be successful with Kroger in Houston, maybe we’ll head off the whole country becoming the LOND.
Thanks for all your help. You’re a true hometown hero!
Hi Joe,
Thanks for letting me know that potholes are the deal of the week. If you need a lot, the City of Toledo could probably help you out. I deliver Mobile Meals and there are streets which are nothing but one huge pothole. I’m going to check right now for Toledo’s Pothole Hotline number. Our area code is 419, so I’m thinking it will be different. Thanks so much, you are the BEST!!
P.S. I bumped your post at the Kroger Couponers Facebook page yesterday for our newcomers. It’s very inspiring. Thank you Joe!
