AIRLINE BUMPING
If you get involuntarily bumped from a flight you can get $400 up to $800 back in compensation (the amount varies depending on how long it is until the next flight). The government is looking to change that from $800 to $1300. Some airlines bump the last person checked in or the one with the cheapest airline ticket. Bumping has been increasing over the recent years as airlines overfill flights, knowing that some people miss flights and as they try to maximize profits. Airlines are supposed to give vouchers to customers that voluntarily get bumped (and for lesser amounts) and give a check or cash to those that are involuntarily bumped.

BP
BP’s true colors are coming through now. Back some years ago BP changed their logo to reflect their so-called being green focus. The logo should be changed to reflect their true colors to black for two reasons. They could’ve used safer methods on their drilling and spent some money to help prevent the disaster, but they wanted to make more profits to keep them in the black and not red. They weren’t prepared for the issue off the coast of Louisiana. The company makes billions and profits yet didn’t develop a fool-proof safety measure for something so critical. Their logo should also be black to show people what everything will look like being covered in oil. Or maybe it should stay green so that it shows they care more about the dollar than safety.
As some companies try to cut back on their costs in this economy we as consumers have to be wary of the cost of them cost cutting and cutting corners. It’s not like they can’t afford to have these issues fixed. It’s affecting a lot of jobs, especially those in the seafood industry there. The environmental damage will be seen for years to come too.
And this is where some people differ. Does the government take charge and regulate the industry so that this doesn’t happen. Or does the free market run its course and we let these companies fix these issues themselves. And it’s not like the government can step in and devise a way to stop oil from gushing from a pipe. That’s BP’s responsibility. Government needs safeguards in its regulations to make sure companies don’t take shortcuts though. Some want government out of the picture for most everything, yet when issues like this happen they want them there and also point the finger at them for not doing more. Needless to say, regulations are needed and safety is of utmost importance.
Should there be an issue with a nuclear reactor do we want the government to fix it? Of course not. It’s not like there is a Johnny-Fix-It Agency that steps in to fix company’s missteps. The owner of the reactor needs to pony up when there are issues. The government has responsibility with its agencies to control those kinds of issues that test to make sure things are done properly, but it’s only as good as the regulations in place. But as soon as you mention regulation they cry about having to spend to fix the issues. Can’t have it both ways. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Oil companies just got too cozy with government and now we are paying the price. Its time to tighten the screws on them. It’s just like telling drivers that the speed limit is 60 mph and not having cops to enforce it. By the way, Minerals Management Service, the agency that was in charge to oversee oil regulations, was the same one that during 2005 to 2007, aside from lax oversight, had it’s regulators caught accepting gifts and having sex with employees of the companies they were supposed to be monitoring. During that time Cheney also presided over a weakening of drilling regulations including the exclusion of remote shut off preventers that might have prevented the current disaster.
Keep an eye on rescinding tax breaks for oil companies and who barks about not wanting to do so. Good to hear Obama has said it is time to roll back “billions of dollars in tax breaks” for oil companies. With billions in profits there is no reason for them to get tax breaks.
When business knows they can get away with cutting corners and let greed set in, they will bring us & themselves down. Can’t have the fox guarding the hen-house. Look at what happened to the banks. And be wary of a fox in sheep’s clothing. Fair and balanced….riiiight. If you have to shout out what you are then maybe you are hiding something, just like the BP logo. There are impressionable people out there that will fall for those tactics. Be careful not to play into fear and shady fronts. I did not have sex with that women, (pause, pause) Monica Lewinsky! Being all-trusting can burn you later on. What do you think Bernie Madoff told his clients? Why do you think the morally-conservative Congressmen that have gotten caught cheating act holier than thou?
The most trusted people such as police, teachers, and priests even fall from grace. People are fragile. Not an excuse for their behavior though. We all have our faults, myself included. I’m still mad at myself for slipping in 11 items in a 10 item or less line. Companies and people just need to be true to themselves and others. In other words, if someone read your diary out loud for the world to hear, how would you feel? Your reaction should tell you something.

ALDIS
Beefsteak tomatoes – 99 cents per pack
Bananas – 39 cents/lb
Avocados – 59 cents
Pineapple – whole – $1.49
Strawberries – $1.29 lb
I was in the Fingerlakes in New York this past weekend and found the prices in the ad for the local Aldis was more for certain items. The avocados were 69 cents each, Pineapple was $1.79, and strawberries were $1.45. All the other prices in the ad were the same. So needless to say, prices vary for produce in certain areas.
ANCHOR BAR
On our way up to the Fingerlakes I wanted to stop at the place that originated Buffalo Wings. The place is called the Anchor Bar and is located in the downtown Buffalo area. The place could use some updating. It had funky stuff on walls and a guy was singing some Sinatra that night. The wings were great. Nice and crispy with great sauce. Best deal was to get 50 at $34. Ten wings were $11 and 20 were $17.
I liked the spicy BBQ. I wanted to buy a bottle of it at their gift shop, but at $5 I figured I could go to a local store and get it cheaper. So I stopped at a Tops. And yes they are still around, mostly in the New York area. Was odd to go into one again. They still double coupons and triple them at times. Most of the deals I found were in produce (cherries – $2.49 lb). And sure enough, I found the Anchor Bar Spicy BBQ wing sauce sold there. It was originally $3.99, but on sale for $2.99. Now’s the time to load up on BBQ sauce since it will be on sale during the Memorial Day/July 4th holidays.

Get 50% off on restaurant gift certificates. Get them early in the month before they sell out. Find $25 certificates for $5 (normally $10). We had a big group of us in the Fingerlakes so we used a couple of $50 off of a $100 purchase gift certificates for restaurants in the area. Interestingly, one of the gals that went with us was the ex-girlfriend of the hiker that got lost in Maine. And I play volleyball with him. Looks like he won’t be playing with us anytime soon with that crushed kneecap. Good to see he was found. I’m gonna have to chide him about it and let him know that the buzzards might have found him to be a tasty treat. Except that crushed kneecap is unsavory. It’s like finding a broken chicken wing after taking a big bite.
