OBITUARY
I had to find a picture of myself for a media thing. I dug around and looked at all my pictures and found that I don’t have many of just myself and if I did they weren’t very good pictures. I realized that I don’t even have a picture good enough for my obituary! I’ll have to work on that.

Speaking of obituaries, I like to read the obituaries. I started a few years ago or so. I saw that there were more people I knew that were in them. But I was also drawn reading the write-ups of the lives of people that were in them.

And some had nothing written about them. Were they loners or losers? Maybe the family knew nothing about them. Or maybe they didn’t have any family or friends left. How sad is that. Couldn’t one redeeming value be put in the write-up like he never had more than 12 items in an express lane.

Then there are some that are written like books. Ethyl had a flair for crafts. She made exquisite pottery. There wasn’t a garage sale she didn’t like. She had lots of friends and will be dearly missed. How cliche.

How about she was a boozer and one time she got so toasted she walked into the wrong house and fell asleep in the neighbor’s bed. Now I’d put stuff like that in mine whether it was the truth or not. What do I care. I’m dead. Keep ’em guessing I say. God knows my scorecard and that is the only being I need to impress.

Then I saw some that weren’t married. I always am curious to see if they mention a special friend or ex. Maybe they catted around. There should be some baseball card-like stats with personal and physical stats listed. That would satisfy my craving for more detail on the person. Then again, I know God has my baseball card that we’ll sit down and go over.

I see a lot of people liked Indians and Browns or were great with their family. I’m a big Indians and overall Cleveland fan. I want people knowing that. So I’d put that in there. I want to make sure people knew I was special so I’d tell them all the talents I had. Joe was one hell of a didgeridoo player. He was not so hot of a whistler, but he tried and that’s what counts. Coupons was his gig and he got his casket at a discount.

I don’t know why writing that made me think of this, but one time when I was in Texas waiting for my friend’s Mom to finish up work at a nursing home we ended up being there while some old coot was having his birthday. It was a special one. Something like 100 or even more.

His name was Woolum Morten. He kept saying he loved everyone and he would say to me and my friend “I love you boys, all of you.” Kinda creepy like the old pervert neighbor on the Family Guy and come to think of it he looked like him, but maybe he was just letting God know he was spreading his joy and love to everyone before he was told to get on the White Light Express. I was just glad he wasn’t giving out free hugs.

Anyway, after that me and my friend would always quote good ol’ Woolum. We’d say “I love you boys, all of you” all the damn time and in Woolum’s old man accent. It stuck in our brains like oatmeal on a chipmunk. Damn that Woolum for doing that.

Then there are pics of people that don’t match the age they died. I think I should use my 4th grade pic – the one where my lip was fat from falling on my face when I tried to use my corduroy pants as a jump rope. I had a snazzy zipper ring shirt on too. Or that might have been my third grade pic. Either way, I remember having a happy go lucky smile.

So while you got the time, get your picture and bio together. You never know when you’ll join Woolum. And Ethyl and her pottery will be waiting for you too.
