DEALS O’ THE WEEK, LAST MINUTE GIFT DEALS

SANTA
Thinking back this year I wondered if I was a good enough boy that Santa won’t give me coal again. I might get dinged for the time in April when I clapped too early at a local theatre play. It was more embarrassing than anything, but I have a feeling that Santa frowns on such eccentricity.

I sent Santa a letter telling him what I wanted. I wanted world peace, a remote control helicopter, a cure for my hives, and a colony of fire ants. You might wonder why I would want fire ants, but I just like the way they take no guff and work together.

I also wondered what the elves get paid. Do they follow state laws for minimum wage? Do they get breaks? Or with all the toys that they have to make does Santa work them to the bone to make quota. Perhaps their stunted growth is due to poor nutrition since eats that are good for ya are limited in the North Pole. My guess is that the island of misfit toys were made by elves that were overworked and their quality slipped because of it.

I plan on hiding where Santa can’t see me the rest of the way out. I’m figuring if he can’t see me then he won’t know if I’ve been bad. I’m not so keen about him watching me so closely. It’s like he’s reading my diary, but I keep my diary well hidden in-between my pair of black jeans that I never wear but I keep around just in case I do.

I plan on sleeping underneath the Christmas tree this year. I figured that way I can meet Santa and ask him all the questions I have. If I get in good with him I might get all the things I wanted too. If I make a connection like that he is more likely to feel guilty for not getting me everything I wanted. Last year was so bogus when all he got me was a dictionary and Fixodent. It wasn’t even on my list. But I figured he gets a lot of things messed up with all the lists he gets so I forgave him. But this year I want it all. And I’ll be watching for him…

WEWS
Click on the link above to watch the video that I filmed with WEWS ABC channel 5 with Jenn Strathman about barcode applications that find the best deal at online and brick and mortar stores when you scan the barcode. Great feature to use to save time and money!

How it works is easy. Just get the free app and then scan a barcode. For instance, I scanned a Monoploy game and it gave me the prices at a variety of stores. The best prices it showed was $10 at Wal-Mart and $10.09 at Target.

Now I got a kick out of this. The story aired on Tuesday, December 14th. That’s not what I got a kick out of. It was that the story just before mine was about someone finding something in their toilet! And that something was a squirrel! Anyone that knows me knows that I write about squirrels and I have a childish fascination about all things that emanate from posteriors. The stars lined up for this one. Good thing I Tivo’d the whole hour of the show. I plan to watch the segment about the squirrel jumping out of the toilet more times than necessary.

TOILET PAPER
Regular roll or Double roll? Which brand has the best bang for the buck? Which has the best quality toilet paper? How many panels are needed? What size are the panels? These are important questions in life. After all most of us use TP every day.

Paper Pulp prices have increased so that is why you haven’t seen too many good deals on toilet paper as was had back in the day. I usually wait to buy toilet paper until I can get a 4 roll package for 50 cents or less. Then I stock up so that it will last me until I can get it again for 50 cents a package.

Have you noticed that toilet paper panels have gotten smaller? It’s true, they have. Most have gone from a panel size of 4.5 inches by 4.5 inches to where they are now 4.1 inches by 3.7 inches. Before long the panels will be as big as a Post It note making the task a very dangerous one. Just like candy bars have gotten smaller, the manufacturers of toilet paper have cut the size of their panels to increase profits. But any smaller and I might just switch to Bounty paper towels. I could cut the Bounty roll in three for an even better deal.

There is also a variance on how long each roll is. Doubles rolls lengths:
Angel Soft – 300 sheets (4.2 inch width) – I always thought angels would be soft as toilet paper. (on sale at Giant Eagle – use $1 coupon, get 2, get $2 On you next shopping trip coupon, get 12 regular 4-packs for $7)
Charmin – 176 sheets (Soft big roll) (4 inch width) – decent quality, can use it as tissue paper too.
Cottenelle – 260 sheets (4.27 inch width) – can knit a shirt out of this stuff
Quilted Northern – 242 sheets (4 inch width) – don’t use it for toilet paper or you may end up with a hand full of snot.

There is a difference in quality in all of them. Some to the point that even with a thicker sheet or double roll you may have to use four or five panels if not more they are so thin. I’m not looking to knit a quilt or sweater using toilet paper, but I want it to be sturdy. Designs and ripples are fine and dandy too, but I need substance.

Some are so rough that they are only good for toilet papering houses. If I come across those types of toilet paper in my stock, I just walk outside with it and find a neighbor’s house to TP. I want to put it to good use after all.
