Gimme, gimme, gimme…
GIANT EAGLE
I had one of those real slow cashiers today. She was so gentle with placing the groceries in the bag, it’s like she didn’t want to wake them up. I thought I should run around her at super speed to excite the electrons around her, hoping that they would in turn make her move faster. Didn’t work. I got in a good workout though.

EXTREME COUPONING
So did you watch the new episode of Extreme Couponing on TLC this past week? They had four gals on. The first one they portrayed as obsessed with her looks. Some of the others had issues at the register…something that we will see if Kroger and other stores decide that they don’t want other people saving as much as they did and start changing their coupon policies and allowed savings like double coupons.
It’s great if the show got people to learn how to save money and how much couponing help people in dire situations, but it does more trying to show couponers with nuances. Kroger has made numerous changes to their coupon policy since the show aired. Not a good sign. Hopefully another cable show will show the good things about couponing and not make couponers look like hoarders.
The producers wouldn’t ok showing that I donated and even filming one of my classes. Those are the hallmarks of couponing. I’m glad I told them no to being on the show since again they are not showing couponers in the best light. I could just imagine what they would show about me. Let’s see, they could’ve ran with an angle of me buying all kinds of women stuff. Or maybe that we have enough chocolate (before we donate) to feed an auditorium of PMS’ing women. Or how incredibly cool it is for a guy to have enough clipped coupons to fill four cases of beer (from my free after rebate beer collection).
Check out this blog about how one of the couponers on the show allegedly fraudulently redeemed coupons:
http://jillcataldo.com/node/16258?page=1
Speaking of, look for new changes to stop the use of fraudulent coupons. UPC bardcode readers are changing and many stores have been implementing the system this year under the new guidelines. The barcode you will see on coupons look different too. I expect stores to lose business as many coupons won’t be redeemed under the tighter bardcode reads. They will have a harder time moving stock which may effect their buying power.
If anything, coupons need to be more plentiful, have longer expiration dates, be for one item and not 2 and more, and in the Sunday papers. Look for some adjustments as the year goes on as to what stores will accept. And as the economy gets better the coupons should get better too.

BIRDS NESTS FOR SALE
I sat on the corner selling birds nests that I cobbled together. I figured all the birds that fly north are wiped out enough flying that far that they don’t want to build a nest. I made them with sticks and dead grass and glued them together with Elmers. Sales were very slow. I had a few sparrows and a cowbird or two get one.
To pump up the sales I included a hat I made out of bottle caps and rubber bands for the birds to wear figuring that would clinch a sale. They loved them. I think they are using them for some bird gangs they are going to put together. So if you see any birds toiling with building a nest, send them my way. I will set them up.
TRANSOCEAN
You know, I really don’t like pointing out how some companies take advantage of the system. Every week there seems to be some kind of injustice, but if we just grin and bear it will continue on. Is there anything that would be so outrageous that it would make you act on it or at least get you upset? Here’s a good one. Transocean gave it’s executives bonuses this past year because they met their safety requirements – this after the Gulf oil spill where eleven people died that was found to be partly their responsibility. Wha-wha-what!? Yes, apparently they did good enough in their formula that they still met or exceeded their safety standards. Let’s see, an oil rig exploded and many people died while ruining the environment and livelihood of thousands. Am I missing something here that makes that ok enough for people to get a bonus. Doesn’t one person dying trigger no safety bonus?
Sure working on an oil rig in the ocean is dangerous than most jobs, but this was a preventable accident. They even stated in their annual report that they had “the best year for safety performance in our company’s history”. What in the banana peppers were they thinking? When does all this nonsense stop? Didn’t someone reading it think that they went too far with that statement and on the bonuses? It’s like shooting someone and then having them apologize to you for you shooting them.
Execs deserve bonuses when their companies do well financially and their stock rises and for other positive moves. That makes sense. But when the company goes bankrupt or almost collapses an economy or ruins the lives of thousands of people because of their leadership I would say they don’t deserve an iota of a bonus.
