FORECLOSURES
Nobody wants to see people have to foreclose on their home, but it happens. There are a glut of homes and great bargains out there. Some markets are stabilizing while others are still bottoming out. Some people are picking up foreclosures and making money on them after fixing them up. Some people are going from being renters to home buyers and creating an asset for themselves.
Want to see how much foreclosed homes are in your area. Try Foreclosure.com and get a free 7 day trial. You can find foreclosure deals on this site.

RECORD LOW MORTGAGE RATES
Another good reason to buy a house instead of renting is that the mortgage rates are crazy-low. Record low! The average on a 30-year fixed mortgage fell to 4.01 percent this past. That’s the lowest rate since Freddie Mac began keeping records in 1971. The last time long-term rates were lower was in 1951, when most long-term home loans lasted just 20 or 25 years. Back in the late 70’s/early 80’s it was four times that rate!
A great way to get a very low rate is to refinance to a lesser year mortgage such as a 15 or 10 year rate. The average on a 15-year fixed mortgage ticked down to 3.28 percent, another record low. How good is it? I refinanced last year and am planning to do so again with these low rates! If your mortgage rate is 6% or higher then I recommend you check it out. You could easily save TENS of THOUSANDS of dollars just by refinancing. You may spend a few grand in closing costs, but you will save tons more as long as you stay in your home
CREDIT CARDS
Are you paying the minimum on your credit card? If you are then you are pretty much paying double for everything you buy using that credit card. Reason being, with interest you are making such a small dent in paying off the credit card that it can take years just to pay it off. Sacrifice and get the card paid off as best you can. Also make sure you are using credit cards that have no annual fee, low interest rates, and offer rewards. You can transfer your balance to a lower interest card. Find the best ones on creditcards.com.

TAXES

GROUPON
Starting Wednesday, merchants who join Groupon will offer a new deal system that will set a spending target for customers to hit before they qualify for an even steeper discount than Groupon usually offers.
With the new program consumers can receive an 80 percent discount instead of the 50 percent markdown frequently given on its daily deals. For example, someone who spent $100 with a salon might only need to spend another $20 to get the next $100 in service. Merchants will have the final say on the size of the discounts.
It should help merchants get repeat customers instead of one-and-done coupon customers. Many businesses were opting out of doing Groupons for that reason as they lost money on the transaction.
It’s similar to a program by LevelUp in which it requires buyers to make three visits to a merchant to get a better deal each time. The rewards program initially will be offered in the Philadelphia area.
SWEET DREAMS
It’s that time of year again. Nights and days are colder. The air is brisk and the rustle of leaves echoes as they ride the wind. It also means that I sleep like a baby at night. That saying makes no sense though as babies are up all throughout the night. I sleep great as I like to sleep in the cold. My dreams also become more vivid.
Last night I dreamt about some chipmunks cranking up the grill to toast all the acorns they found. They were all looking at me funny, like as if they knew something I didn’t know and that freaked me out. They had these blank looks but with a tinge of angst that revealed something was up. I later found out my hunch was correct.
Did you ever feel that way? You know, that uncomfortable feeling that you know something big is about to go down, but you can’t quite put your finger on it. I’m thinking the chipmunks were thinking a variety of things. Either they wanted to start toasting me on the grill because I looked sumptuous or they knew the other week I found a cache of their nuts and replaced them with Gobstoppers. I wasn’t sure which assumption was right. I figured they hadn’t gotten to the Gobstoppers yet because the nuts were still plentiful so there was no need to go back to eat their buried winter stash.
I started coughing real yucky. Real loud and obnoxious with a lot of expectorant to maybe gross them out. After all, why would they want to eat me if I was ill. Their beady eyes were still piercing me, looking through me just like a disapproving mother. But I tried to avoid eye contact just like a child does when they get the “Talk”. Maybe they will go about their business if I ignore them. I was wrong.
They all started to walk up to me…slowly. I gave them a nod and a relaxed greeting, “Howdy partners” I said and in a southern drawl for no reason. They walked right past me. I turned back and saw that they were heading towards a blaringly loud merry-go-round behind me. They got on and rode that thing for hours; their little paws jabbing at the air with delight. They were full of glee, so I got on too and we all just had a wonderful time like a cow would have in an overgrown lawn or a starving bird in a 40 lb bag of sunflower seeds or me in a vat of fruit & nut Chunky bars.
None of the dream seemed to make sense until I realized what it all meant. Sometimes I don’t realize all the good things that I have right next to me and instead I pay attention to all the distractions that are staring right at me. I also found out that acorns make one tasty treat when toasted and are full of protein and fiber and that merry-go-round horses when ridden for hours causes much chafing.
New barcode example.
BARCODES
The Joint Industry Coupon Committee (JICC) of the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) and the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) have created a new coupon system using North American Coupon Application Guidelines for GS1 DataBar (RSS) Expanded Symbols. The changes started to take affect in 2010 as the current UPC-A barcode will be retired.
A new GS1 databar coupon code replaced it on July 1, 2011. Stores will have until the end of 2011 to adopt the new system. The new barcode identifies the company prefix and offer code. It looks like a “double bardcode”. The code will match the product purchased with the coupon. Coupons will beep at the register if the product wasn’t purchased with the correct coupon. The old barcode will be phased out. Some systems may not read the old barcodes correctly and beep at the register even though the coupon is legitimate. Cashiers will need to manually enter the coupon in those situations. The new system will read expiration dates much better and beep should the coupon be expired. For more information go to http://www.barcode-us.com/coupon/dataBarCoupon.html.
You may see a 2D barcode also called a Quick Response code (QR code) on packages or coupons. They help identify the product for the consumer and provide information such as the company’s web-site and contact information.
