GIFT CARDS
Lotsa gift card deals during the holiday season. Most are available through 12/31/12. Gift cards can be risky to purchase though. Many restaurants close every year as do many businesses. The gift cards can be worthless unless another business graciously decides to accept them. They usually do so not at face value. So if a business is shaky, it’s best not to get a gift card from them.

I’ve been noticing on the BOGO sales that they throw around the BOGO (buy-one-get-one-free) knowing that people automatically think it’s a BOGO deal. However, more and more it’s BOGO50% (buy-one-get 50% off) or if doing the math get each item 25% off. I even saw a BOOGO70% deal – meaning it’s 35% off each. The BOGO makes it seem like a great deal, but when they make the second item a percentage off then it changes the dynamics of the deal. Don’t fall for this sales gimmick!

MY BLACK FRIDAY
I’ve never waited in line outside to get the doorbuster Black Friday deals. I didn’t have plans to wait in any line for an extended period of time this year either, but that changed. I had to stop at Giant Eagle on Thanksgiving. I took a look over at Target and noticed they had gates set up for the Black Friday lines. I didn’t see anyone waiting in them though and it was around 3:30 PM and I knew that they opened at 9 PM. No matter. I was on my way to eat a Thanksgiving feast.
So I finished up dinner enough so that my Toughskins button was ready to ricochet across the dining room. On my way home I decided to drive by Target to see how long of a line there was. To my surprise there was around a couple dozen people. I still was unsure about waiting and even started to leave before I turned around and decided to get in line. It was around 7:00. I got in line and again was unsure if I wanted to wait. Then a gal said that the first 30 get in the door first and then they wait for 30 seconds before another 30 get in. I was number 27. The wait was on.
There was no aromatic people in tents. Just people who showed up that evening. I was surprised because I figured every main retailer would have people waiting at least a day to be first in line.
I called my wife and told her I was in line at Target. She asked what I was going to get. I told her quizically that I didn’t know. I knew they had some TV deals. I got an ad from the people in front of me so I was able to figure out what I wanted.
I have some ancient TVs. You know, the ones that have the huge bubble on the back of them that make them look pregnant. I only replace them when they go bad and I knew any day now one of them was going to go bad. Those things use lots of power too. I think the new ones use like three teaspoons of electricity a year.
Target had some great deals on TVs. A 50″ was on sale for $349. A 32″ was on sale for $147. I was allowed only one TV. They passed out tickets to people to get the one they wanted. I opted for the 50″. Sure enough, I got a ticket for it. In celebration I did the moonwalk to person number 38 in line.
At 9:00 they started to let us in. I was bummed that they guy cut off the line off the first 30 with two people in front of me. I’m a fast walker so I knew I could get to where I wanted in no time. I might not look cool doing it, but I didn’t care. I sure hope I didn’t see people I knew. There was no time for chit-chat. I was on a mission. I made sure I didn’t make eye contact with anyone I knew. If I did it was a walking hi and how are you.
The people in front of me said that it’s best to get the TV first even though I planned to get some other items. They said sometimes the TV line can be long if you wait to get it. So I got my TV and got the other items I wanted and then got in line. I was out the door at 9:20. People were still swarming in. I got some whoops and hollers and raising the roofs from the people in line still coming in the store after they saw my big win. I even heard a gal say “Hey, that’s the Coupon Guy!” I think I taught her in Junior Achievement. I best not pick my nose or have spinach in my teeth should I get recognized in public now.
Off to home I went. I was feeling good and slanted my body across the center console like a gangsta as I drove home. Then I thought to myself. I wonder if I could get the 32″ TV. It was such a great deal. Back to Target I went.
I got in line and they said people without a ticket had to wait in another line. At 10 PM if the people with tickets don’t show up then the rest of the TVs would be handed out. I anxiously waited. Good thing I didn’t have to go to the little Cowboys room.
At 10 PM there was a long line behind me. They started passing out the TVs. Mostly 50″ models. But many of the model I wanted. My heart was racing. Some older lady got a 50″ TV and she was dragging it across the floor. I could manage a TV if I got one without a cart so I gave her mine. It was my turn and I thought I saw the one I wanted. I asked for it and they had it! I snagged another great TV deal! I think I saw maybe one more left of the model I wanted. Whew! And here I thought I had to live in a tent for a few days to get these kind of deals.
Most of the people wanted and Xbox or other video game deals. I don’t play video games so I didn’t get them. When I was a kid though I was a regular at Game Trek, a video game parlour at Shoregate. Now the only video games I play is trying to figure out why my remote isn’t working. I press all the buttons on it like as if that thing will unlock the TV secrets of the world to finally get to the channel I’m looking for. And my how these video games have changed from the time I played on my lame Atari.
I had a $10 off coupon from Target and on my purchase I got 5% off for have a Target Red Card credit card. The 5% comes off automatically. Some great deals on those TVs.
I got some other deals on Black Friday itself. Most of the places had what I wanted. Some stuff I tried to get online was sold out quickly. In all a successful shopping weekend. I may still need to buy some Wham-o weight loss device to work off all the food I ate. Happy Cyber Monday everyone!
