EXCUSES
A gal I know said she had to take her car to get worked on and it was going to cost her $450. I asked her what she was getting fixed. She said she was getting the air filter and cabin filter replaced along with the fuel filter. I told her they were ripping her off. A fuel filter can be replaced for $100 and the cabin filters can be replaced yourself relatively easy for around $30 to $45 total . The problem is that, although she complains about not having enough money all the time, she still went forward with the appointment. I even told her I’d replace the filters.
On top of that she said they charged her for a tire rotation that she didn’t need, so her total was $530 with tax. She said they told her it needed to be rotated every 3,500 miles. The standard is 12,000 miles. But she didn’t take it up with the manager. I told her I would call them if she didn’t. She hesitated at contacting him – yet she complained about it to the wrong person- me! You can see the pattern why she is having money problems.
So why didn’t she listen? Habit. Some people don’t like to change the way they do things. It’s the same reason people get divorced, fight with other members of the family, and don’t get along with others. They just don’t have the ability to be open-minded and change. There is a lack of listening too…because they are close-minded. There is a comfort in doing things the same way and a fear of changing. Looking back we all have made changes that were uncomfortable at first but then we later realize it was for the best.
I had another conversation with her about her flying to Vegas and getting the best deal. She said it cost $600 to fly there. I said I could find a better deal. I found one for $250 roundtrip. She asked if it was non-stop. I said no. She didn’t want to take it. I said, well, if you have the money to spend then go non-stop. She ended up getting the $250 ticket. Was it worth $350 to be inconvenienced with another stop. You bet for that much. It wasn’t even that long of a stop. Plus in the summer there are less delays than in the winter.
She also needed to rent a car. She wanted to get it from Enterprise. That’s fine…if they are the cheapest. But she didn’t open her mind to look at others. I told her of a couple sites that would get her the rental for very cheap. She said she didn’t have a computer. I said she could go to the library to book the rental. She looked at me like I was made of peanut butter. I told her the sites don’t even have you pay online. It’s just a reservation. Did she go to the library to set it up. No. She was too used to using that excuse and relied on others to do the work for her.
Many people still shop at the same stores they’ve shopped at for years even though they know they can save more elsewhere. Why? Habit again. I can write about some deals where you can get 10 items for free and many people still won’t go there to get the items even if they need them. Why? Because it’s unfamiliar on how to get the deal for free. It seems foreign to them to get stuff free so they dismiss it.
People make excuses all the time why they don’t do something. They can justify it with just about any excuse. Politics is a great example. Even when presented with facts people still dismiss it as fiction. Even when Politifact comes up with facts to back up why a statement was false people don’t want to accept that the party they believe in could lie. People have the same stance when they are found to be wrong. We all know people that will never admit they are wrong.
The gal I mentioned earlier is a prime example of someone that hasn’t mastered the art of saving money. Instead they hold onto old beliefs and get themselves into the same problems. They shop at the same stores and waste money left and right even though they are living paycheck to paycheck.
Another gal, much younger, I took shopping with me to see how I shop asked me why I buy all this stuff if I don’t need it. I told her I may not need it now, but with it being nearly free if not free or me making a profit on it it’s not that much of a hassle. Most people go shopping and buy stuff they want or need. At most that method will save you 20%. I save over 70% on everything I buy. Most of the deals I post show that percentage savings. The thing is many people with a negative stance or habits about saving money are usually the ones in financial hardship. Do they use coupons? Do they look for the best deals? Or do they make excuses why they don’t?
I let her know that anything could happen and if I have a stock of items I can subsist on it for a good while. Until she experiences a hardship or lives on her own she won’t understand it fully.
The best time to save is not when you really need to it’s when you don’t have to. That way you can amass more savings without feeling the pinch of having to curtail shopping.
It’s like taking a vitamin every day. You take it because you know in some way it will help you even though you really don’t notice a difference after taking it. And if you see a stubborn-infused, closed-minded vitamin on the ground…don’t pick it up and eat it.
SELF CHECKOUT
Costco is getting rid of their self checkout lines. Instead they are going to hire more cashiers because they say they do a better job of checking out the customer. Bravo! A store not replacing someone with a robot! Self checkouts tend to glitch because a coupon doesn’t work, etc and they have to call customer service over to fix it. A cashier usually can fix it with not too much trouble. At times self-checkouts come in handy, but even they have their limitations. One thing though – Costco doesn’t take coupons!
