RIP LAPTOP
My laptop died the other week. Not a fun thing. I sent it into Asus to have it looked at after the techs over the phone couldn’t revive it. The gal I spoke was told me thank you for being so nice. She said normally people aren’t that nice to her when they call trying to get their laptop working again. I told her it is what it is and that I pretty much wrote off the laptop as dead already. I had it 4 years.
She said I had to pay to send it in. I asked her if they could give me a RMA to send it in. She said they normally don’t do this, but since I was nice she sent me the RMA so I could send it in for free for a diagnosis.
About a week later they sent me an e-mail and a quote for $510 to fix it. I vomited a little. I think I paid around $300 or $400 for it in the first place! So there was no way I was going to pay to get it fixed.
I then went digging around for a laptop deal. I finally found one at OfficeMax. They had a Toshiba 17.3″ laptop for $199 after a rebate! It wasn’t high end, but it worked well. I’ve been using it and it is quicker than the one I had. It was a display model and being discontinued. I tried to get an extra 10% off because it was a display, but they wouldn’t go for it as they gave me some schpiel that because it was already discounted so low as the last unit, blah, blah, blah. I also tried to use a coupon like the $10 off $50 ones, but they aren’t valid for tech equipment. The ones you get for doing a survey do work though! It was $5 off $25 or more. Hey, it was at least something. I used some Maxperks credits and gift cards that I got Fuelperks on at Giant Eagle, so in the end it was even cheaper than $199.
Because the old laptop died I was able to move the Microsoft Office suite that was on it over to the new one, so that helped.
They asked if I wanted to insure it. The insurance was almost as much as the cost of the laptop. I politely declined. The extended warranties usually aren’t worth the cost anyway.

JET BLUE
Jet Blue is launching flights out of Cleveland this week! There will be non-stops to Boston and Ft Lauderdale. The competition will help lower prices as Jet Blue is a low-cost airline. Hopefully they will bring more non-stops to Cleveland. They are known to have decent service and amenities than other low cost airlines.

EARTH DAY
Earth Day was this past week and many places gave away reusable bags. As stewards of this earth, it’s important we don’t take advantage of what it offers and how it affects others. Places like China could care less about pollution as Beijing and other cities there have so much smog that people walk around with masks on their face. Ok, if I have to wear an accessory to avoid health issues, I think it’s time to regulate pollution. My health is not worth an extra buck in an already rich person’s wallet.
Polluted communities have been found to have cancer clusters, areas where there is a higher rate of cancer as compared to other areas. Some have been found to have contaminated soil and other pollutants that have caused the cancer rates to increase. California, with it’s heavy environmental regulations, have many districts with lower than normal cancer districts and only 3 higher than normal. The South was almost all red, with a lot of districts in cancer clusters.
Other earth goings-ons include California going through a bad drought the past 4 years. The governor requested a 25% reduction in water usage, excluding farms. Some have cried foul as some farms such as almonds farms consume more water than all indoor household water use of California’s 39 million people. California almond growers provide 80% of the global supply of almonds. Each almond requires a gallon of water or 1.07 trillion gallons annually in the state, one-fifth more than California families use indoors. Some other crops use as much, if not more. People around the world are eating over 1,000% more California almonds than they did just a decade ago, and last year almonds became the top export crop in California, the nation’s top agriculture state.
Fracking is another environmental concern as more studies have found they are the cause of earthquakes. Last year Oklahoma, a state now heavily into fracking, recorded 585 quakes of magnitude 3 or greater. Prior to 2008, Oklahoma averaged less than 2 a year. You can’t argue with facts. I have earthquake insurance as Ohio has increased fracking and you never know where it will hit next as Ohio is fracking lots.
THE BMV AT MARCS!
The first of nine self-service kiosks that promise quick and easy renewal of your motor vehicle registration opened Thursday in suburban Columbus at a Marc’s store in Westerville. Eight other sites are expected to be up and running in the next month or so, including locations in Brook Park, Garfield Heights & Amherst. Kiosk users will just need to swipe their driver’s license and credit card, and the machine will spit out vehicle registration stickers. The BMV won’t charge any additional fee for using the machines, though credit-card charges will apply.
“They’re saying you can do that in less than 60 seconds,” said BMV spokeswoman Lindsey Bohrer. The kiosks are meant to provide a convenient alternative to registering in person at a deputy registrar’s office.
