If you’re like me and enjoy wine and finding great deals, you’ll appreciate this blog about wine deals and about wine itself. I’ll reveal which wines and wineries I love best. Some of my ancestors made wine, so it’s in my blood. Of which I wouldn’t be surprised if you analyzed my blood it would be a nice Meritage – 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 10% Petite Syrah, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Throw in some Chardonnay and Riesling and a vampire would find me quite tasty.

Bottles of wine can be expensive so it pays to know where to get the best deals. Back in the day a bottle of wine could easily be found in the $15 to $20 range at a restaurant. Now it is hard to find it for less than $20 and good ones for less than $25.

Many stores have great sales on wine. You can regularly find good wine marked almost half off at Giant Eagle and other stores and wine shops. Look for a wine rebate on the bottle and you’ll get up to $48 or more back via rebate on a case purchase. Most all also offer a 10% discount when you buy a case of wine.

Some stores have discounted wine that they are trying to sell off. The wine can be marked as low as a penny above cost in Ohio. When Tops was here they had to dump any wine they didn’t sell when they closed. Even the $100 bottles. You’d think they could discount it more so that it would sell, but the law wouldn’t allow it. Oh to be the sink that had those bottles poured into it.

The way the Ohio pricing law works a wine must be marked the retail price for one month and then it can be discounted for two months. The cycle can then repeat.

One of my favorite regions for wine is Washington. They have some great wines at great values. The best wines are in the Walla Walla region where it is hot like a desert making it a good region to grow red wines, especially Syrah. They used to have a lot of apple orchards and grow other fruit there. Making wine became more profitable, so a lot of the orchards were torn out in favor of vineyards. My favorites wines I’ve found there are a Barnard Griffin Port, Tagaris Merlot, Milbrant Merlot, and pretty much anything from Chateau St Michelle, Columbia Crest, and Columbia Valley. Columbia Crest is a perennial winner of value wines in Wine Enthusiast magazine. K Vineyards, located in Washington, is expensive and has very highly rated wines. You can try their lesser brand Charles and Charles for a better value.

For great quality, international wines at a value try Portuguese wines. They were known for Ports, but they make great reds along with some solid whites. South American wines are also value-based, but the quality is still not top notch. They are known for their Malbecs. Australian wines can also be found on the cheap, but they also suffer from not consistently offering quality wines. They are know for their Shiraz wines.

Some years are better than others for wine. From year to year the same wine from the same winery can go from awesome to horrible and back to awesome depending on just how the weather treats the grapes. A hot, dry and sunny summer will stress the grapes and concentrate the flavor. Cold at the beginning and end of the season will lower the quality. If it’s too rainy it will also lower the quality of the grape. For instance, the year 2007 was a great year for wine. Many wines were rated 90 and above that year. In 2008, not so much. In 2009, it got better again along with 2012. It’s not like Coca-Cola where the wine tastes the same year after year. Some years it’s like you are paying for a BMW, but get a bicycle and vice versa.

I usually ask for a taste when I go to a restaurant before getting a bottle of wine so that I get one I like and don’t have to request not keeping the bottle. Good restaurants will let you taste for free. The last thing you want to do is choke through a bad bottle of wine. I’d rather not have to return the bottle after they open it, so getting a taste avoids that situation.

Trying to find a good value wine, I’ve had my share of bottles of wine that cost $15 to $20, sometimes less. There are my favorites at certain restaurants and they are worth the couple extra bucks. At TGIFridays they have a bottle of 2013 J Lohr Cabernet Sauvignon for $27 and it is worth it. Sometimes they will offer half off on bottles for a limited time, usually around Valentine’s Day. There are also some great wines at the wineries around Geneva, Madison, and Harpersfield that charge in the teens for their wine.

We enjoy our wine and we’ve travelled to most wine regions in the U.S., including Santa Barbara, San Ynez, Paso Robles, Temecula, Sonoma, Russian River Valley, Dry Creek, Napa, Sierra Foothills, Placerville, Santa Rosa – all in California. We’ve also been to wineries across Oregon, Washington, New York, Michigan, Niagara on the Lake, Missouri and even wineries in Idaho, Montana, West Virginia, Maryland, and other not so well known states for wine. I even got wine from Alaska (a berry wine).

I just love the atmosphere of the wineries…and the wine! Nothing like being out in the country enjoying the scenery and being in a rustic or unique building to wile away the stress. Although sampling wines you’ll find some that are just nasty. Some taste more like garbage dumpster juice. I will have to say that doesn’t stop me from going back to those wineries. Many instances I’ve found that those same wineries go through a learning process and eventually end up making some great wines. They just have to go through some clunkers before they get it right.

Futures is another way to get a great deal on wine. Some wineries will let you buy the wine without being able to take it home! Wine that is stored in barrels and offered for sale for future bottling and shipping at a later date, sometime years later are called ‘futures’. We did that once where we tasted a ‘futures’ wine that was still in the barrel. It was a Zinfandel from Perry Creek in California. It was awesome. We got it at a great price as it turned out to cost a lot more after it was bottled, but we got it for a lower cost because we bought it when it was a ‘futures’ wine. It’s just a way for a winery to get an infusion of cash by offering customers a chance at getting wine at a great value or before it is sold out.

Wine tags are coupons found on bottles of wine. They were more prevalent back some years ago, but there are still some found here and there. Sometimes wine tags include coupons for meat, produce, condiments, snacks, and other items. I even found one for ice one time. Depending on the state you live in you don’t always need to purchase wine with it. In Ohio you don’t need to purchase the wine. Cashiers sometimes see a wine bottle advertised on the coupon and they mistakenly think you need to purchase the wine with it.

Rebates for wine can be found on bottles of wine. You can usually find one that will give you a rebate for purchases of 1, 3, 6, or 12 bottles. I regularly find rebates for $24 for a case of wine. I’ve even seen rebates of $50 for a case of wine. Buying one bottle usually gets you $2 off or so and it tiers up from there. Giant Eagle sometimes has rebates via a Catalina that prints at the register. Check iBotta and for rebates/rewards too.

Most every store will give you a 10% discount when you buy a case of wine. You usually can mix and match so that you don’t have to buy all of one wine. Wineries usually do the same. Some even give bigger discounts or 5% off for half a case. The empty boxes also make a great place for storing Christmas ornaments or snakes.

I’ve purchased cases that some out-of-state wineries were trying to get rid of at 75% off the original price! However, shipping the wine can be costly, but I’ve gotten it shipped from wineries out west for free.

Sign up to get e-mails from you favorite winery and they’ll usually send you deals through the year. Sometimes they will send deals that include free shipping! Wines Delivered-120x60

A bottle of wine typically is equal in volume to 4 glasses of wine, but that depends on how a restaurant pours it and the size of the glass they pour it in. Sometimes you can get 6 glasses out of a bottle of wine if they are pouring them into small glasses. As a standard, multiply the glass price times 4 and if it is more than the cost of the bottle then get the bottle, if you plan on drinking that much. Check out their wine glasses first. Some places use tiny glasses while others use large wine glasses. Some will pour a measured amount using a measuring container while others will pour it freely where you will usually get more for your buck.

For port wines a glass that look like a tall shot glass is used. The glasses are small because port is high in alcohol. I went to a restaurant this year and asked for a glass of port. The waiter, a young kid, poured me a glass using a large wine glass and on top of that almost poured it to the rim! I was happy. The business, I’m sure, not so much. That’s the cost of not training staff.

Ohio allows you to cork the bottle and take it home if you don’t finish it. Just call me if you need help finishing your wine.

Many bars and restaurants do happy hour pricing on wine. Many are a $1 off or so for a glass of wine. Some charge $5 a glass…not that great of a deal, especially if their glasses are small. Places like Bar Louie will do $4.25 glasses of wine including glasses that are normally $10 or more. Some even do half off bottles or glasses of wine on certain days. Bless their hearts. Find the best wines as found by the Ohio Grape Industries Committee at
Any Ice wine at Ohio wineries is usually top notch and has won a ton of awards. They have to wait for two days of 19 degree weather before they can pick the grapes for the ice wine.

There are many Ohio wineries making spectacular wine. Sure, many years ago there were some and still are ones that still make the sweet stuff. But don’t let that fool you. There are many making great dry varietals. Some of the ones that made nasty wine some years ago have turned the corner and they now make spectacular wine. Then again, some have not and their swill still tastes atrocious. One day I wish Wine Spectactor would compile a list of their lowest rated wines with comments and tasting notes of the worst wines. That would be a good read.

The Polar Vortex two years in a row in previous years killed a lot of vines. Many wineries had to start over, so the quality may not be the best until the vines recover. One winery, M Cellars, didn’t lose all the vines because they protected their vines by burying them under dirt and then dug them out in the spring. Very labor intensive, but is saved them tons of money not having to replant them.

If you like the sweet wines that Ohio was known for way back when then try John Christ, Klingshirn, Firehouse, Mon Ami, Deer Pass, Emerine Estates (try their caramel apple), Buccia, and Virant. I’m not crazy about them. Too much sugar can make them headache wines.

Some wines are sourced from outside of Ohio. Because the source changes most every year the taste can change also. You’ll see those bottles labeled American instead of say, Grand River Valley. Estate wines means they grow the grapes locally that they bottle.

There are some wineries that have consistently put out good wines in northern Ohio. Here are some.

1) Markko’s – awesome chardonnays, cab sauvignon, and Rieslings
2) Laurentia – great pinot noir, cab, chardonnay, and Gewurztraminer – you’ll automatically raise your pinky finger when drinking their wines
3) M Cellars – great reds and whites
4) Kosicek Winery – great petite syrah and traminette
5) Harpersfield – superb dry white varietals
6) Laurello – great variety of quality wines. Some Italian varieties too. Try the Rodavi.
7) St Joseph – great pinot noirs (won double gold in San Fran), awesome cab franc, their Shiraz won some nice awards too
8) Maple Ridge – not open much, but great wines – organic too
9) Paper Moon winery – good selection
10) South River Vineyards (Church Winery) – try their red blends and vidal

There are also others that have a spectacular one or two wines.

1) Lakehouse Inn – it’s a B&B that sits on a bluff next to the lake, they have a deck on the lake, garden area that is a site to see that goes down to the lake.
2) Gervasi Winery – located in Canton. The place looks like an opulent California winery. Beautiful
3) Laurentia – new winery has a great rustic look and overlooks a pond.
4) South River (Church winery) – rebuilt church now a winery, great picnic pavilion and terrace area overlooking the winery.
5) Thorn Creek Winery – beautifully landscaped winery
6) Ferrante – busy, but the place looks high falutin
7) Laleure – old barn with patio on hillside that overlooks the vineyard
8) Wolf Creek – great view from deck – in Akron
9) Mastropietro – many weddings there
10) St Joseph – new location – great overlook

Most every winery has a great atmosphere. Here are some good ones:
Hermes, South River, Lake House Inn, Thorn Creek Winery, Harpersfield Winery, Laurentia, M Cellars, Ferrante, and Chalet Debonnet

Old Mill is unique with old wood beams. It’s near downtown Geneva.

Many have great music venues (indoor and/or outdoor) like Grand River Cellars, Ferrante, Chalet Debonnet, Harpersfield, Firehouse, Old Mill, and Laurello. Chalet Debonnet has a great outdoor facility. They have craft beer there too – Double Wing Brewery.

We just got back from vacationing in the Fingerlakes. That’s where we got engaged! Beautiful area in the middle of New York. There are around a dozen lakes that look like fingers. Yes, you guessed it right, hence the name Fingerlakes. They were carved out by glaciers and not some cavemen with shovels many moons ago. Tons of wineries there. Over 100 now along with a bunch of new breweries and distilleries.

We stayed at a B&B that gave out passes for free wine tastings at dozens of wineries and free tastings at cheese places too. We saved enough on the tastings to cover the cost of the room! We got the deal on Groupon. It was for Los Gatos B&B. Their sister location, Barristers does the same deal with the tasting coupons.

Most of the wineries in the Fingerlakes charge around $5 for a tasting. It used to be free many years ago. There are a couple that don’t charge for tastings – Crooked Lake Winery and Dr Franks. Both on Keuka Lake.

I also purchased the New York wine card on Living Social. More free tasting deals and also discounts on wine. It was discounted when I purchased it at $15. It was good for two. Get them at

Some of our favorite wineries were McGregor (try the Black Russian – wow! Made with Serkesiya and Saperavi grapes which are indigenous to Russia. Great pinot noir too), Long Point Winery (great reds), Weimer (spectacular Rieslings), Dr Frank (great whites), and Lamoreux Landing (great whites, especially their chardonnay if you like buttery, oaky ones).

My wife’s brother quit his good job and bought a seaplane and is doing seaplane tours over Keuka Lake. Very risky to start a new business, however he is doing what he loves to do. We went on a flight. Very cool lifting off and landing on the lake. The business is called Fingerlakes Seaplanes. You can book a flight with them at

We also stayed a night at Chautauqua lake. Lots of wineries in that area too.

During the trip I stopped at some Aldi’s and got a kick out of comparing it to the local Cleveland ad. They had pretty much the same items on sale, but for different prices. For instance, a cantaloupe here was .99 while in NY it was $1.49 and $1.29 in Pennsylvania.

Some restaurants charge a corkage fee. It’s a fee to open a bottle of wine that you brought in. Works great since you can find a steal at a store and then bring it in to open for $5 or less. Some places don’t even charge a fee to do so.

At Cedar and Green Wine and Cheese you can pick a bottle in their store and drink it there with a $5 corkage fee. You can find great deals on bottles. Some are less the $10 on sale. Located in University Heights across from Heinen’s on South Green Road.

At Pranzo located in downtown Willoughby bring in your own bottle and pay $10 per bottle for a corkage fee. It used to be $2 per glass, but now they sell wine there so they upped the price.

Molinari’s in Mentor lets you choose a bottle in their “retail” shop and they charge you $5 for a corkage fee.

Grumpys in Tremont lets you bring in wine. There is a convenience store across the street with a decent selection and price.

Deweys Coffee in Shaker Square has a $5 corkage fee.

Red, Wine, and Brew in Mentor next to Lowe’s charges a $3 corkage fee on all their retail wine if you drink it at their bar/restaurant. Great prices and selection on their retail wine.

Speaking of corking, Ohio law lets you take your wine home that you don’t finish. The restaurant will cork the bottle back up and seal it so that you can take it home.

Benny Vino – used to be in Perry and now they are in Madison – the place is around the corner from St Joseph – a bit hidden

In Ohio the law to charge for tasting changed. Wineries no longer have to charge for tastings. Many still do though. Here’s the rule:

Outside of Ohio some wineries charge while others don’t. Some will credit the tasting fee if you buy a bottle of wine. Some charge way too much like $15 or more for a tasting (Napa). Sometimes that is only to taste 3 wines. Some are free after using a wine pass that gets you freebie tastings and discounts (Dry Creek Region and Fingerlakes). Some charge a reasonable amount or none at all. Some you can find free tasting coupons on their web-site. Some wineries should pay you to taste their wine and then use your body for science to test the effects of their nasty wine. haha

Go to a wine region’s web page or City of Commerce department page to find coupons for wineries or go to the actual office to get them. I was at Niagara-in-the-Lake and they had a good many that they gave me for the area wineries.

Great wine tasting sites like Cheers2Wine will post winery tasting and bottle coupons at

When you go to wineries ask them if they have coupons for other wineries. Many do. They usually have free tasting coupons for other wineries. They appreciate the “recommendations” from other wineries.

One way to get free wine at the wineries is to take a giant swig from the dump bucket where people pour out the wine they don’t want to drink. Along with the cornucopia of wines in the bucket you’ll be able to taste the gum people have been chewing or the brand of cigarettes people have been smoking. It’s great if you like a tobacco taste with your red wine.

Check local magazines for wine tasting coupons. I found one for Standing Stone winery in the Fingerlakes in the local Wine Buzz magazine that I used. Whatever wine region you’re in they usually have a local magazine – kind of like a Scene magazine or Voice Magazine – that will have coupons in them.

Another coupon card with discounts and free tastings is the Wine Travel Card. Get them at

After tasting wines you usually want to buy a bottle of it. Sometimes they offer discounts at the winery, but there is a good chance that same wine is even cheaper at a local grocery store. Check out the local stores to see what they are pricing the bottles at before you buy them at a winery as they are sometimes up to half the price than what you would pay at the winery.

This huge wine event is held at Lake Farmparks in Kirtland during the first weekend of August. It’s being held August 4th & 5th this year. Tons of Ohio wineries participate. Music and events all day long from 1-10 pm. Click here for more information about the event:

WVIZ usually throws a great wine event each year. It’s one of my favorites. Heinens used to be the sponsor, but Giant Eagle is now. Click here for more information:

Typically the festival is the last weekend in September in downtown Geneva. Stomp grapes, try grape pies, and listen to bands. You can do wine tastings at one of the halls there.

In June they have a BBQ and wine and beer event at Progressive Field. It’s sponsored by Giant Eagle. Great food and entertainment. Part of the fee is tax deductible since it is also benefits Our Lady of the Waysdie. For more info click here:

Visit to learn more about how Plenti works with each partner. It’s mot much different than Walgreen’s Balance Rewards program. Read more about the program at

Through wellness+ with Plenti, customers can use one card and earn two kinds of points. Sign up at
•Members will continue to earn wellness+ points toward various benefits at Rite Aid including discounts of up to 20% off storewide, exclusive sale prices and 24/7 access to a pharmacist.
•Members will be able to earn Plenti points whenever they make qualifying purchases at Rite Aid and other Plenti partners. Plenti points can be used for up to two years at Rite Aid and at certain other Plenti partners.

Members with 0 – 499 points will be Bronze status and earn (1) 10% off one-time shopping pass with every 100 wellness+ points earned until they reach 499 points. And with 1,000 wellness+ points, members earn Gold status and qualify for 20% off nearly the entire Rite Aid store for a year.

Wellness+ points are points earned toward Bronze, Silver and Gold status discounts exclusively at Rite Aid. Members can earn one wellness+ point for one dollar spent on eligible front-end purchases and up to 25 wellness+ points for every eligible prescription.

In addition to exclusive members-only sale pricing and earning points toward savings of up to 20% storewide, wellness+ with Plenti members will enjoy the following wellness+ benefits:

•And 1 wellness+ point for every dollar spent on copays (not to exceed 25 points per prescription) for government-funded prescriptions.

Wellness+ points will continue to reset at the end of each year, but all earned Silver and Gold status discounts remain active through the end of the next calendar year.
