I signed up for flight fare price alerts from and The sites let you know when the cost of a flight goes down to a destination you designate. I received an e-mail for a fare alert from Cleveland to Maui for $499 round-trip. A great deal since usually the cost is around $700 to $800.

I pulled up the fare online and it was even better – only $479. At that price it would be silly for me to take advantage of the deal. Only a one-stop too. I booked it and then had to get busy looking for deals on a place to stay and car rental.

I checked with the place we stayed at before, a condo, to see what deals they had. He said he could do $110 or $120 a night. He verbally committed to $110 so that is the deal I got! Most decent places in Maui cost double that.

Budget, National, Avis, Hertz, & Alamo!

I then had to check the price on a car rental. This is where it got good. When I first checked on I was getting a price of $43 per day. Yipes. I kept checking and found a price of $180 total for 8 days with Priceline. The catch was that it was a pre-pay. I wasn’t going to get much cheaper so I booked it. Then later in the week I noticed a lower price of $160. I remembered that Priceline had a price guarantee, so I called them. They gave me a hard time initially, but eventually gave me the difference back. They said I’d be getting a $40 credit. It was a $20 difference so I didn’t know why they said it was $40. I found out later that it was because it was a 200% guarantee! So it only cost me $140 for 8 days. That’s around $7 per day plus taxes. Stupendous!

no one deals like we do!

On the flight there was a kid chatting away most of the trip. At the end of the flight he asks his Mom, “Why were you vacuuming naked last night?” She said she didn’t think anyone was awake. Then she said she was sorry he had to hurt his eyes. I’m sure she wanted to crawl into a ball and roll away.

The first thing I do when I get to the airport is to grab all the booklets and magazines displayed around the baggage terminal. Reason being, aside from tips on where to go on the island there are always tons of coupons in them. We used a bunch that I found in them. One we used more than once – BOGO breakfasts at Moose McGillicuddys and Down the Hatch. At Down the Hatch in Lahaina they even had a carafe of bloody mary or mimosas for $10.

With the nasty winter we had the first thing we wanted to do was hit the beach. I’m a snorkeling fool. I can snorkel all day. Some beaches are more for swimming or surfing while others have decent snorkeling. There were tons of turtles at most every snorkeling area. Some were huge. A lot bigger than the last times I was there. One beach had around a dozen of them eating stuff off the rocks. They have no restaurants to go to so stuff on rocks it is. At another beach I got a moray eel scrounging for hidden meals.

I wanted to go to Shark Beach to snorkel again. The snorkeling was great there from when we were there last time. I didn’t notice that there was a shark warning sign until after I left and that was when I swam a mile out to swim. I couldn’t even see the beach. This time the water was a bit murky which is when sharks tend to bite people because they don’t realize what you are. Since the water wasn’t as clear I didn’t snorkel as much there. Do as the locals do and that is when you know it is ok to go in the water or not.

On the second day the weather was bad. Cloudy and rainy which was a bummer. We decided to check out the new Avengers movie during matinee hours, of course, and it also ended up being half off popcorn day.

The weather was up and down the whole trip. We checked weather to see where it would be sunny on the island, so that is where we would go for the day. You can travel from the west side of the island to the north or southern part within 45 minutes. To the east of the island is Hana where, if you want to vomit, take the road to Hana. There are over 600 switchbacks with some one lane roads. It takes three hours to get there. We did that in a prior trip on News Year Day…I wouldn’t advise it on that day. It’s something you have to do once. Not much in Hana once you get there, but there are beautiful views and some decent beaches along the way. Some waterfall hiking trails too.

We also had to deal with a volcano erupting on the Big Island. When we were in Maui it didn’t affect us. The winds kept the toxic VOG (volcanic smog) away from us. There were earthquakes, but we didn’t feel them. Like every trip we take there is always some kind of natural event like a hurricane or earthquake that happens after we leave. This time it was a volcano. Sure enough it erupted after we left. The winds drifting the VOG over Maui within days after we left too. On the flight home I tried to see if I could see the lava or smoke from the volcano, but I only could see the mountaintops as it was cloudy.

We stayed in Kihei which is in the middle of the island near the southern portion, just north of Wailea. Lots of people stay on the western side where Kaanapali and Lahaina are located because of all the hotels there and touristy parts. Decent beaches too.

I stopped at Long Drug to use my Extra Bucks. CVS owns Long Drug, so they take Extra Bucks and even have a CVS Extra Bucks kiosk there. I bought some souvenirs with the Extra Bucks. I also had to buy a new snorkel. I was on the beach putting my mask on and the strap busted. My wife also had a mask so I used it, but it was hot pink. Not that I couldn’t keep using it which might attract some fish with it’s blaring color, but I wanted to snorkel together and we couldn’t do it with one mask. It was only around $8 for a new one, so I got it using my Extra Bucks.

There is a reason that everyone doesn’t move to Maui as easy as it would be easy to want to do so. It’s just way too expensive. Everything costs about double or triple, if not more for food at the grocery store. A gallon of milk was around $6. Eggs were usually around $3.50 or more for a dozen. Strawberries were $5. Pineapples were even expensive which you would expect. They were around $4.

Even fast food was expensive. A burrito supreme at Taco Bell was $4.99. We stopped there for a quick meal one night. I used a BOGO coupon I had from an Entertainment book I bought for Hawaii. We used a bunch of coupons from it. There were more coupons for Oahu in it (where Honolulu is located) and not as many for Maui. I’d recommend getting an Entertainment book for whatever city you’re travelling. They are a bargin now and are good through Dec 31st and cost around $10 now (originally $35 to $45).

I stopped at all the major stores to see what kind of deals they had. Most of the big chains are in Maui, including Target, Lowe’s, Wal-Mart, and Walgreens. Everything cost more, but they are just like the stores on the mainland. Lots of differnent plants for sale than what I would find in Ohio.

Here’s one thing that Hawaiins love. It’s Spam. Not the e-mail spam. The food Spam. They even have various flavored Spam. Gelatinous meat in a can doesn’t sound that appealing to me, but if you disguise it just right it can be tasty. If I were a cannibal I think it would be a staple meal for me.

Save Everyday at Great Seafood Restaurants

I used some coupons. There were around ten places that had certificates for Maui. It’s a great option when you don’t have any coupons for the restaurants in the city you are travelling to. One restaurant just started on and we showed them the certificate on our tablet, but they said they needed the paper version. They contacted the owner, but he didn’t get back to us in time before we finished the meal. When he did he said he would mail us a check for the amount of the cerfticate! It was for Beach Bums restaurant. Great ribs there. Voted the best in Maui.

We decided to do a day trip to Lanai. It’s an island off the coast of Maui that was used for artillery practice during WWII. Now it is a quiet island mostly all owned by Larry Ellison from Oracle.

On it I had one of the best snorkeling experiences I ever had. I noticed some splashing around in the water in the bay that didn’t look like it was from swimmers. Then I heard someone say there were dolphins there. They also said you can’t chase them or swim after them or the warden will cite you. I swam over to the area they were around. I heard some chirping in the water. I recognized it from the last time I came across dolphins in the wild. I knew they had to be close. Just then a huge swarm of them came swimming my way. After one wave swam by another bunch of them would. At one point I’d say there were around 100 of them around me. There were some babies swimming close underneath their mothers. Some were flipping around out of the water. It was incredible.

I could see them looking at me. One had some material that was around his fin. At first I thought maybe it was tangled in his fin. Then I realized he was just playing with it. You can see the greenish material in the video. They love to play toss with stuff in the water. One time, on a different trip, they were using some poop to play with. Hey, it’s not like they can go to Wal-Mart to pick up a beach ball to play with. You use what ya got.

One thing I noticed was that the water was very clean everywhere along with the island itself. There were no bottles or junk in the water. Maui is very eco-friendly. They don’t even have plastic straws. They are made of paper. Lots of solar panels. They ban plastic bags.

Unfortunately, there are people that have difficulty placing garbage in trash cans. There is a plastic island of litter the size of Texas in the Pacific. It just takes too long for plastic to break down and too many people litter so it ends up in the water floating around forever. Fish eat bits of it and it ends up in our food chain. So if you notice your fish tastes plasticky there may be a reason for it.

One great deal I came across was for t-shirts. Only 7 for $20! I was located in Lahaina at an outlet store.

Every day we took advantage of the happy hour deals. They usually ran from 3 pm to 6 pm and started again at 9 pm. Most all of them were listed on this site: Some places had half off apps and drinks. The best deals were at Three’s in Kihei, Fleetwood’s in Lahaina, and Five Palms in Wilea. A place called Sansei in Kihei also did half off sushi on Sundays and Mondays starting at 5 pm until 6 pm. You had to get in line around 4 pm to assure you got a table.

I ate so much seafood I started growing gills. The best seafood was Sansei for their sushi, Maui Brewing for their Calamari steak fries, Stopwatch for their Ahi, Fleetwoods for their Ahi nachos, and sushi at Threes.

Traffic was heavier than when we were in Maui last. It built up a bit more. Still lots of green space. The roads can only handle so much traffic. They added a highway to bypass Lahaina.

When we were at Fleetwoods they had a one-man band. He said he had a sales job in California and hated it. He and his wife decided to sell everything and move to Maui. No jobs in advance. The wife figured he would get a job singing at places around the island. Quite brave to start over with nothing in place. That’s faith.

At one beach I saw more than I expected. As we get over to it we noticed that lots of people there were wearing invisible clothes. I’m guessing nobody told them their bathing suits were invisible. I wanted to tell them, but I think they would’ve gotten embarrassed or a little defensive, so I left it alone.

At that same beach I caught a rare sight snorkeling. I was snorkeling in an area that was a bit dicey since it was mostly just rocky cliffs with waves crashing into them. Nobody was there so I had to make sure I didn’t get too risky. I keep an eye on the fish to see if they were getting flushed out and I had to get a good feel for any currents.

As I turned around to go back I noticed there were a couple snorkelers up ahead. One was looking at something and as I turn around there was a bat ray swimming up near me. They are beautiful the way they swim in the water with their undulating wings. They have a stinger, so I had to keep some distance. It was probably four or five foot across. I followed it for a bit, not Steve Irwin close, as it made a turn for deeper waters.

It was hard leaving since Maui is so beautiful. It’s one of the best places in the world. Small, but big enough to enjoy different parts of the island. Everywhere you look is breath-taking. The mountains, the ocean, the greenery, are all pleasing to the eye. The weather is always in the 70’s and 80’s. I’m looking forward to another fare alert for Maui.
