CATALINA BANKRUPT
Catalina, the company that prints the coupons you get at the register, declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy. It was about $1.6 billion in debt. The company said there should be no effect in the short term and that retailers will continue to honor both digital and print coupons provided by Catalina. At Giant Eagle this past week I got a couple freebie item Catalina coupons, so hopefully they will get it together and continue on.

JAPAN
We were looking for trip to take by the end of the year. With it being winter, we wanted to do a Caribbean cruise. The flight times, prices, and itineraries weren’t working. While I was digging around for a deal I came across a fare alert for flights to Japan in the $600’s. Flying there usually costs two to four times that. I haven’t been to Asia and Japan was on my list of countries to visit, so after checking the dates and times I found some one-stop flights that worked. Japan here we come!

Just after I booked the trip I tried searching for a Japanese foreign exchange student I went to high school with. I tried finding him in the past with no luck. I checked Facebook and this time I saw someone that might look like him after 35 years. I couldn’t tell if it was him though until I checked his likes and found he liked a page called Eastlake North 80s 90s. Bingo! Found him! I sent a friend request and he accepted right away. He said he would take us out to dinner. I told him we wanted to do karaoke too. Gotta do karaoke in Japan!

Now it turned to getting the hotel and anything else needed for the trip. I didn’t need to rent a car because there are enough trains and subways to get us where we needed to go. The subway was cheap too. Only around $5 round-trip to most everywhere.

I booked our hotel via Hotels.com. I kept checking for deals and there was a price drop on a hotel I was eyeballing, so I cancelled some other reservations I had. The deal was incredible. I got a buffet breakfast with the deal. With taxes and fees the room was only $79 a night.

The hotel was the Fresa Inn Nanachome in Ginza. It’s in a district in a central area of Tokyo with high-end shopping and it’s close to subway and rail stations.

Expedia.com

We get to the airport and since we are early we stop at the United Club. Since we have a credit card for United we get a couple free passes to the United Club every year. I had passes that expired the day before and they said as a courtesy they would take them. Free food, Wifi, newspapers, and drinks! The trip is starting off right!

With the United credit card there are no foreign transaction fees. That saves us at least 3%. They convert the going rate and that is better than going to a bank or converting at the airport since they don’t offer the full exchange rate. Having the credit card also gets us our first checked bag for free too.

We had a stop in Chicago. Right across from our gate was a United Club. Perfect! More food and drink and we had another pass to use. From there we fly over 13 hours to Tokyo. To pass the time on the flight I watched Antman and the Wasp, Deadpool 2, Pacific Rim, and Uncle Drew. It’s hard to sleep and relax much on long flights, so the free drinks on the flight helped. The problem is that you don’t want to have to crawl over people to get to the bathroom.

no one deals like we do!

We land in Haneda. It’s the airport closest to the city. Smaller than Narita, the other airport in Tokyo. We get through customs quickly and take a train to our closest stop and from there take a taxi to our hotel. The city is huge. Tall buildings everywhere. It’s like a clean Manhattan.

We get to the hotel and I asked them if we could get a room upgrade to two beds as the rooms and beds are tiny. All it took was asking and they upgraded us!

The time difference is 13 hours, so the nights are days and days are nights. We didn’t have jet lag there I think because we got there late Sunday and went to bed soonafter. Coming home it was more pronounced.

We took the subway a lot. Our first ride was to a city called Sinjuku. Lots of nightclubs there. Also an area called Memory Lane where you find lots of authentic eats. It’s also known as having the busiest train station in the world with over 1.25 million daily commuters. Yes, daily.

DSC_0141

Godzilla!

In Sinjuku there is a Godzilla head on top of a building that blows smoke every so often (the one above is in Ginza). Another restaurant in the city is called Robot Restaurant because, you guessed it, it’s staff is made up of robots.

DSC_0122

Sumo Wrestling Hall of Fame

We stopped in Harajuku. It was one of the towns featured in the Conan O’Brien special on Japan. Young girls there wear colorful outfits and look like anime cartoon characters.

DSC_0026

Imperial Palace

Other places we visited were Shibuya (second busiest train station in the world), Roppongi (decent nightlife), the Tsukiji fish market, the Imperial Palace, Rygoku (where they have sumo tournaments and a museum and near the Sky Tree building at 2,080 feet is one of the tallest in the world).

DSC_0332

Mt Fuji

We took a day trip to Mt Fuji. It was cloudy and what looked like rain on the mountain when we first came in view of it. The tour guide said that only 1/3 of the time can you see the top of the mountain. As we get closer all of a sudden the clouds started dissipating. Bamm. The whole mountain was viewable. Really was amazing. Plus she said that the previous week the road was closed because of snow. Not only that she said that the road was supposed to close any day now for the season.

DSC_0391

The view from the middle of Japan.

We took a boat ride on Lake Ashi. From there we went to Hanoke. We took a tram up the mountain. It overlooked the middle of the country. The sun was setting so we had an incredible view. Taking the tram was a bit of a thrill too. It seemed a bit old and needing an update. I’m sure all the hairline cracks on the tram building was nothing to worry about. Our cable car back down was stuffed with people and the tram and all looked like it was ready to snap. We didn’t pay extra for the excitement.

On the way back we took a bullet train. Very cool. It was something I wanted to do on the trip was to ride the bullet train. They go as fast as around 200 mph. Dogs would just love sticking out their head of a bullet train window.

The whole Mt Fuji, boat ride, tram ride, lunch, and bullet train was part of an excursion that cost around $135 per person (got an additional discount on the site itself). Well worth it as Mt Fuji itself was two hours away by bus (we took the bullet train back).

DSC_0515

Tsukiji Fish Market

I used https://www.XE.com to check for the exchange rate. I got around $1.13 in yen for every U.S. dollar. Back in 2012 you would get .75 in yen for every U.S. dollar, so the rate is tons better right now. We were told Japan is a cash society and to have money with us when we arrive. We converted some money at Huntington bank and they charged $8 for whatever amount converted. The exchange rate was less than the going rate though. There was a better option once we got there.

The best way we found to convert was by using a debit card at an ATM. Most debit cards charge around a 3% fee, but you are getting the day’s conversion rate and not a lesser amount.

The cost for food at most restaurants was very reasonable. With the exchange rate so good now, it made costs cheaper.

DSC_0175

Robot Restaurant

There is no tipping in Japan. You could, but they find it insulting. The receipts don’t even have a place to add a tip.

We came across some decent happy hours. One place had all drinks and food all day for 300 yen which is less than $3. One thing that some restaurants did was have a happy hour food that was cheaper, say $5, but they also gave you a tiny amount of food. Same thing they do in the U.S. when they charge less for a small plate or appetizer along with discounting the food, so you really aren’t getting a deal.

DSC_0523

Octopus for sale!

There is a tray you put your credit card or cash on to pay. They wouldn’t take the credit card or cash by hand at times. You had to put it on the tray.

They have no one or five-dollar bills. They are in the form of coins. When taking out cash at the ATM you have to be careful not to take out the wrong amount. 1,000 Yen is around $10. Kinda freaks you out since you want to make sure it’s not $1,000.

DSC_0560

Please take a person one by one. Hmmm, so they want me to be a hijacker? It was a sign they meant to say take only one complimentary item each (like tea or a shower cap) per person at the hotel.

The English translation were pretty hilarious for some signs. I could’ve gotten a job just “fixing” the English translations on signs. The above was for complimentary toiletries and tea at the hotel.

We learned a few words in Japanese, but not much. In most big international cities people know enough English to get by. In Tokyo it was hit or miss. We asked for directions from some folks and some didn’t know a lick of English, but they still tried telling us where to go in full Japanese and using hand gestures. For the most part we did out best charades and mixed in enough of each others language to figure things out.

DSC_0213

Ummm, do I really wanna go down this street.

The one day we decided to get massages. Nothing like a good massage after being on a cramped airplane all day. My Japanese friend from high school told us where to go for them. He must have known I was looking for a deal since they were only $20 for a half hour! The massage was good and then afterwards she says “key?”. I have no idea what she is talking about. I then finally realize she is saying “tea”. A place for massages is not a place where you want to mistake what is being said.

DSC_0557

I still don’t know what to make of what this sign said.

I was looking for a souvenir shirt and the large size was tiny. I ended up having to get a 3XL shirt. No kidding. It was an XL size in the U.S. I realized it later, but just like shoes are different in size in other countries so are shirts. I wish I caught that before I bought Godzilla boxer shorts that may have fit me when I was ten years old. I was a bit on the bigger side there, but not exactly like I was a giant.

DSC_0150

Lawsons! Yep, all over Tokyo were Lawson stores. They closed here in the U.S., but were licensed in Japan. And no, they didn’t have their awesome chip dip there (it’s sold at Circle K stores here in the U.S.).

One of the cool things about the trip was visiting the Japanese exchange student I went to school with. Hadn’t seen or heard from him in 35 years. I’m not 139 pounds anymore and I have plenty of gray hair, but he remembered my goofy laugh. I remembered that he wanted to be a diplomat. We were in the marching band together and he said he appreciated that I was friends with him when people didn’t always include him. Seeing how different the culture is in Japan compared to the U.S. I’m sure he was in culture-shock. Coming to a new country and trying to communicate in a new language and make friends when people weren’t always accepting must have been tough. Learning English helped him get where he is now in life. It was great to re-connect our friendship after all these years.

DSC_0339

He took us to an authentic dinner. I don’t think I ever had so many courses in a meal. I was done after round 2 and there were around 5 more.

I pretty much ate nothing but seafood, rice, and ramen noodles. Loved it all. Even had rice every morning. The buffet breakfast was interesting. Some fish stuff, miso soup, dumplings, and pickled stuff that I’m not what it was, but it was brightly colored and tart. I grew up eating odd ethnic food, so trying new stuff was ok with me. The one place told us that all the food they served was eel. Wasn’t quite ready to try that at lunch though although I know I’ve had it on sushi in the past.

I stuck to drinking Japanese beer for the most part. They were all good. The drink of choice in Japan is a highball. You’ll see it prominently advertised at bars and restaurants. I tried sake, but am not a fan of it.

DSC_0277

I found some coupons for attractions. There were some in the booklets at the airport. Even the visitor center near Mt Fuji had a display of coupons.

We had to do karaoke while we were in Japan. My wife sings great. Not me. They have a lot of places that are studios where you can sing after paying to rent it by the hour. We instead opted for a bar. I did sing. Luckily, there weren’t many people in the bar to grace with my horrible singing ability. Paula Abdul may let me get past round one because she would feel bad for me, but not Simon Cowell. The one guy there did say I looked like one of the Lettermen – not David, but the group from the 60s.

DSC_0555

Toilet paper is not always in public toilets so sometimes you will get these coupons that get handed out with a pad of toilet paper in them like the ones above. Some toilets are the holes in the floor type…I didn’t attempt to give them a try. The one we had in the hotel had a bidet and all kinds of controls. Too much.

A few things that Japan is dealing with is an aging population. Not enough kids being born to replace the elderly that are dying. Many countries in Europe are facing the same issue.

It’s gotten better, but some workers would work crazy long hours to impress their bosses and company. Some to the point they died doing so. We were told that is changing.

DSC_0007

Kit Kats are huge in Japan. They make all kinds of flavors of Kit Kats, including Purple Sweet Potato, Green Tea, and Grape. Very expensive. A tiny bag was $4 most everywhere. I was able to find some that were under $2.

Here are some observations I made:

There are no trash cans. I mean nowhere. Not on sidewalks like they are in the U.S. Not outside of stores. Instead their culture is all about getting rid of the trash before you leave a restaurant or store or anywhere. Here’s the kicker. There isn’t litter anywhere. As huge of a city as it is it’s clean as can be.

DSC_0314

The Japanese culture is the embodiment of respect. That being said, you don’t see graffiti anywhere. As big of a city as Tokyo is it was devoid of graffiti. They respect their city enough not to trash it in more ways than one. Even all the bowing they do is a sign of respect. Should a CEO or company get caught doing something legally wrong, they will go on apology tours.

It’s very safe. In 2016 there were only 6 deaths by gun in the whole country! Just six! Cops only fired six shots total in 2015. Most cops have batons, but no guns. They try and de-escalate situations before using any force. A country that everyone should emulate.

There weren’t any fitness gyms that I saw. I also didn’t see people wearing t-shirts with sports teams or decals on them. I couldn’t even find a sports shop to buy baseball shirts or any type of sports shirt.

DSC_0464

Tokyo Tower

It is eerily silent even with tons of people walking around the streets. They rarely talk outside. It’s part of their polite society. It’s also part of a society that has trouble engaging with each other. We were told by someone we bumped into that Tokyo is known as the loneliest city in the world. Marriage is on the decline there. Physical displays of intimacy in public is taboo – no holding hands or kissing! So I refrained from any makeout sessions with my wife in front of Lawsons.

Part of the reason it might be so silent is that a lot of people wore masks on their face. It’s to keep germs out. Probably cooties too. I felt like if I sneezed I would get some laser stares of disappointment.

You’d expect 5 lane freeways and most of the roads are two lanes each way. There is no space for berms too. There were times I think you could’ve barely fit a strip of Wrigley gum between the bus we were in and the median barrier. No sticking my arms out the window!

DSC_0517

Rules!

In the U.S. people cross the street even when you have a don’t walk sign. Not the case in Japan. Even though the street may take only a few steps to cross and there was no traffic people would wait for the walk sign. I can get impatient when I want to get somewhere so it drove me nuts.

The Q-tips we had at the hotel were awesome. They weren’t flimsy. Q-tips in the U.S. used be more firm, but now they just bend while you are digging around in your ear.

Everyone seemed to wear black or blue, especially men in those color suits. No vibrant colors unless you were part of the Hajuku young folks or geishas. I wouldn’t be surprised that is why the young people decided to dress as such. To break the mold of drab clothing everywhere.

They love their anime (action cartoons). When I glanced over on someone’s smartphone many would be watching anime.

They love to eat lots. Everyone is skinny, but you wouldn’t expect it seeing how much is eaten.

On our way home we had a stop in San Francisco. The flight got there an hour early. Had it not I don’t know if we would have made out flight. The customs lines were long. Good thing we had TSA pre-check too!

It was a great trip. Next up – Honolulu for $308 round-trip!
