BEAUTIFUL BERMUDA
I’ve never been to Bermuda and always wanted to check it out ever since Dr. Spock did a show on it called In Search Of. It was a show that featured odd things like Bigfoot, aliens, and, of course, the Bermuda Triangle. We recently booked a trip to Bermuda. Now on my flight there I will see if I fly into another porthole dimension.

Flights there were reasonable at around $400 or so on sale. I was able to use 60,000 points we earned from opening a credit card with American Airlines. It was only 15,000 points each way, so our flights were free!

One of the most expensive parts about Bermuda is lodging. Most everything is $200 or more a night. When that happens I usually will book an AirBNB. That’s exactly what we did. We found one right in the middle of the island in a Parish called Warwick. It was near the south shore beaches, where the best beaches on the island are located. All within walking distance along with some bus stops. The rate was a great deal at around $75 a night. They just started bookings this year and all the reviews were great. They were rated 5 out of 5, so we booked it.

Renting a car wasn’t an option. They don’t allow it! The island is too small to support rental cars. Only one car is allowed per house. Most people use scooters or a bus to get around. Taxis are always around too. The cost was nearly $50 a day for a scooter. We didn’t need one though as we took the bus or walked wherever we had to go and being in the middle of the island helped…plus we hitched a ride! Later about that.

DSC_0178

Before we left I checked out the prices at restaurants and stores. The prices were very high. Part of the reason everything is so expensive is that the island is only 21 miles across, so they import everything. Even Bermuda onions stopped getting exported.

Its population is only around 65,000 people. You can’t move in easily. They have to limit the population because there isn’t enough land to support it. Even bartenders have to be Bermudian. There were a decent amount of people there on work permits.

DSC_0270

Gombey Dance Parade (traditional island dance troupe) in downtown Hamilton

Hamilton, their largest city had a good many restaurants and bars along with some shopping. It’s also near the center of the island. There is a smattering of restaurants across the island and minimal shopping, but nothing like there is in Hamilton.

Using my coupon super powers I sniffed out all the deals. We mainly did happy hours for our dinners. Here are some of the best deals:
Utopia – $3 wine on Fridays from 3 to 5.
L’Oriental – $6 sushi rolls from 5 to 6:30.
La Terrace – 2 for 1 pizza and wings on Mondays (.50 wings), $4 select beer bottle all day, $7 double Dark & Stormys all day.
Docksider – $10 dinner specials (ribs, fish & chips. Etc.)
Beach Bistro – $5 Bacardi drinks on Wednesdays.
Doghouse – Happy hour from 4 to 7. A huge variety of beer for $6.75 a bottle.
Flanagans – $5 Dark & Stormys all day.
Le Venice – Happy Hour on Monday with free food, Happy Hour drink specials from 5 to 6:30.

Bottles of wine were super expensive. We didn’t get any bottles (except duty free at the airport) – even when they were 20% off at L’Oriental – still around $40 or more per bottle.

DSC_0288

The original Swizzle Inn

The popular drinks on the island are the Rum Swizzle (fruity drink with rum) and Dark & Stormy (dark rum and ginger beer). Both very sweet. Diabetes is prevalent on the island and the drinks don’t help.

All food was expensive. Most all places had entrees of $30 or more. Instead, when we couldn’t find a deal, we got sandwiches and appetizers priced in the teens that were great and shareable. We loved the Wahoo fish sandwich at the Swizzle Inn for $18.50. Enough food to split the meal.

The one time we splurged was to get an octopus appetizer at the Barracuda for $19. As usual, when we splurge we are disappointed as the portion was tiny. Two small pieces of octopus. Delicious, but gone in a second. You may think it’s gross to eat octopus, but if you get it fresh and grilled it is the best. Better than calamari which some places fry it up too much that it’s like eating a handful of rubberbands.

DSC_0168

Yes, $14.29 (on sale!) for a 12 pack of Mountain Dew!

The craziest prices were at the grocery store. I’m surprised I didn’t pass out at first glance at the prices. The cost of everything is literally around 4 times or more than what we pay here in the U.S. A 2 liter of Canada Dry Ginger Ale was $6.29. Paper towels were $3.50 a roll! A watermelon was $13.99. Bananas were $1.99 a pound. Eggs were $9 a dozen. The only reasonably priced items at the store were alcohol and chicken (might be because chickens roam the island).

The workers get $15 or more an hour, but that’s barely enough to get by. Gas is $8 a gallon and rent was around $2,000 a month so just to get by bare-bones is tough. Check out the cost of living in Bermuda and other countries here: https://www.expatistan.com/cost-of-living/country/bermuda

There is a lot of healthy food at stores. Bermuda is very consious about it to the point there is only one, yes one, fast food restaurant. It’s a KFC. The problem is that not everyone eats healthy because they can’t afford the healthier food.

DSC_0067

One of the most unique things is their source of water. Every roof is made of limestone. No shingles. No wood. There is a ridge near the bottom of the roof that collects rainwater that is used for their water needs. The limestone acts as a purifier. Sometimes you’ll see people bleach their roofs to help with purification as over time they get discolored from mold. All the roofs were white too.

The speed limit is around 20 mph because the roads are dangerous. They curve everywhere and there is barely any room for someone to walk along the road. I wanted to rent a bike to ride around the while island, but it was just too dicey to be on the roads with a bike. Plus they drive on the other side of the road.

Anyone riding a scooter must wear a helmet. Smart. Scooters dart around cars and most of the time cars are over the center line as they go around curves. In the U.S. motorcyclists can go 60 mph with no law to make them wear a helmet. One accident and that’s it. Motorcyclists don’t like to wear helmets, but for safety sake they should have to wear them on freeways. Us traveling to so many countries, you see all the differences and what they do better than us.

DSCF1776

We took the bus to different parts of the island. Most times you can catch the bus every 15 minutes to an hour. They have an unlimited bus pass that cost $62 per week. Instead, we got a 15 ticket booklet that cost $37.50 or about $2.50 each way. For the 9 day trip we got two of them. We did take the taxi once when we stayed in Hamilton real late.

I felt safe everywhere we went. They do have crime. One local said it was mostly gangs from different ends of the island fighting each other.

Of all the places I’ve been to, the Bermudians are the most polite and helpful. Almost every time we were by a bus stop we got asked if we needed help. People would also pipe in when they saw we were having a conversation that needed an answer. Not that we looked helpless…or maybe we did. They always offered advice and more.

DSCF1922

There was nice coral around most sections of beach. Surprisingly, they didn’t have signs to not step on the coral or damage it in any way.

DSCF1906

Trunkfish

We walked the few miles of South Shore beaches a handful of times we were there. The last day at the beach we strolled down to Horseshoe Bay. We stumbled into a sandcastle competition. I thought it would be fun to give it a try. I don’t know if I ever built one, so I figured I would sign up. I built some huge snow sculptures back in the day, but never something like a sand castle.

I went up to the tent and asked if I could sign up as I saw some plots weren’t being used. They said they were all going to be used. So much for that so we went to have lunch.

After lunch I went over to the tent as I saw there were still some plots not used and they were already at least a couple hours into the competition. This time she says yes there is! I signed us up and named the team ‘Cleveland Rocks’.

She hands me buckets and tools and I’m off to make a blob of sand into something. I decided to make an octopus partly because I was still hung up on how little we got in our octopus appetizer the previous day.

The sun was beating down on us and we rushed to get caught up to make something in the time we had. My wife would cart buckets of water while I made the sculpture. I had to keep the sand wet so that it would stick together. Mid-way between the competition the head collapsed and I had to start it all over again. This time I used more water.

We were in the visitor category and the people next to us were in our category were sandcastle veterans. Theirs were a snowman and trees and looked pristine. I already had them in first. They even gave me some tips as I really didn’t know what I was doing.

One of the judges told me that I would get penalized since my sculpture was beyond the 10’x10’ plot. So I had to push some of the arms back in. I added a starfish and anchor. I also put a band-aid I found on one of the tentacles. I heard a lot of kids commenting on the band-aid as I toiled away. The octopus has a boo boo!

DSC_0459

It was time for the judging and I figured at best I would get third. There were other categories with professionals doing some incredible sculptures. Mine was ok, but kinda morphed into Sigmund the Sea Monster and Ziggy with lots of arms.

The judges checked it out and we had to wait for the winners to be announced.

The third prize went to the people I thought should take first. There was no way we were ahead of them I thought and figured we got bumped out of the top three. Then they announced the second place team, a Pac man sculpture. As they do that the third place people said we were the first place team. I thought no way. Sure enough, they announce the first place team – Cleveland Rocks! I was floored. Not only that, we won $300! It even made their news. Check it out here: http://bernews.com/2019/09/photos-results-sandcastle-competition/

It was in Bermudian money, so we figured we would use part of it to get a taxi rather than wait for a bus since we were now hungry and wanted to celebrate. The problem was all the taxis driving by were full, so they blew right by us. So we waited for the bus and hoped an empty taxi would stop by. As I am standing near the bus stop a lady and her dog are walking by and she stops and asks if we need a ride. I was like, yeah! She said she had to pick up a pizza and would then be over to drive us. I see her at the restaurant and she waves to me to acknowledge us she will be over.

She picks us up and we are on our way! Yes, while I am holding a placard that I won $300 she is a stranger taking us to our hopeful destination. I had to hold her pizzas and smartphone as she drove us to the Swizzle Inn restaurant. I offer her some cash and she refuses. Like I said, Bermudians are quite nice and helpful.

They use American money and Bermudian money interchangeably. Even though they have roots with the United Kingdom, they base their monetary system with the U.S. There were a lot of people from Britain, including many workers at the restaurants.

The beaches were some of the best we’ve every seen, if not the best. Quaint coves and powdery sand. Pink sand beaches. Aquamarine water. Nice coral in spots. A bit wavy in spots. I snorkled a ton.

The water was so warm. Too warm at times. When we were in Hawaii in January it was chilly, so it was nice to be in warm water.

DSC_0399

One negative. Some beaches did have a lot of broken glass. I brought some empty bottles to shore that I found while snorkeling – Somerset Beach had tons of empty bottles there in the water along with broken glass. Good thing we brought beach shoes. Otherwise, our feet would have had shards of glass in them…maybe that is why some of the sand is pink…

We stopped at both ends of the island by bus. Dockyard, where the cruise ships dock, and St George, a historical town which was the old capital.

Good thing we were in Bermuda and not the Bahamas with hurricane Dorian causing catastrophic devastation. Wishing all the best to those affected in the Bahamas for a speedy recovery. It’s always chancy booking a trip during hurricane season where they frequent. Bermuda tends to miss the big ones being in the middle of the Atlantic and as by the time they reach Bermuda they have degraded enough.

We definitely plan to be back. August was very hot and humid. We were drenched with sweat at times. We’ll go back when it’s a little cooler. I will have to see if we can take our next ‘flight’ there for free again by transporting ourselves through a porthole dimension through the Bermuda Triangle.

Giant Eagle is offering curb-side grocery pickup with orders placed online. It’s called Curbside Express. Pricing is the same as you would get in the store, including sale items.

Highlights:
•eCoupon can be used (coupons you can activate by going to https://ecoupons.gianteagle.com.)
•Manufacturer coupons can be used! Just hand them to the person when you pick up you groceries.
•Double your money back on store brand items.
•Earn Fuelperks on purchases just like you would in-store.
•Additional Curbside Express offers can be redeemed.

New Fuelperks Plus program! How it works:
•Every $1 spent equals 1 Fuelperk.
•Every gallon pumped equals 2 Fuelperks.
•Every 5 Prescriptions earns 50 Perks.

Redeem:
Every 50 Perks earned can be redeemed for 2% (use up to 20% in one purchase) off your grocery purchase or 10 cents off per gallon at GetGo gas stations (up to 30 gallons worth). At times they have 20 cents in Fuelperks for every $50 spent on gift cards (up to $6 savings).

Learn more and get 25 BONUS Perks at http://www.gianteagle.com/perks

Each week get a deal, including freebies, through their eAdvantage program. Sometimes they also offer a eAdvantage deal only good at GetGo gas stations. Register at http://www.gianteagle.com/Save/eadvantage-club/

Giant Eagle doubles coupons that are 99 cents or less. For example that means a .75 coupon will double to $1.50 off. It happens automatically when a coupon that is 99 cents or less is scanned at the register – 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

Get eCoupons good at Giant Eagle at https://ecoupons.gianteagle.com/. An eCoupon won’t work if you use a manufacturer coupon for the same item. An eCoupon will supersede a paper coupon. ECoupons link to your loyalty card and trigger when you purchase the item – only works once and doesn’t double.

Giant Eagle posts what needs to be purchased in order for Catalinas (register coupons) to print. Find the Catalina deals at: https://www.gianteagle.com/Save/Checkout-Rewards/
