The average for a 30-year fixed-rate loan hit 3.15% this past week, a record low. Now is a great time to refinance, if you haven’t already. Even if you have refinanced in the past it may be time to refinance again. You could save tens of thousands of dollars over the life of the loan. Some banks are offering even lower rates than 3.15%.
Be sure to compare rates apples to apples with no points and low fees. Some charge higher fees with points for a low APR.
You can get better rates with a 15-year or 10-year loan (or other yearly amount). I was able to pare years off my loan by paying less and cutting the number of years owed just by refinancing.

90 DAY FIANCE
What is it with the show 90 Day Fiance that has me hooked? Is it so real that I find it tantalizing? Or is it just interesting watching the train wreck of relationships go through it’s twists and turns? Whatever it is I look forward to it every week.
The premise of the show is what drives the craziness. It’s a person from the U.S. getting married within 90 days to someone in a foreign country. The relationships developed initially online. With the tight restrictions on time the couples are in hyper-drive to move the relationship along creating heightened emotions. You have jealous people matching up with players, geeks with partners above their league, old with the young, money-grubbers with the naive, and more. In the end, some couples make it work. Most crash and burn for all to see. Cultures clash. It will make you feel any issues you might have with your relationship are normal and so very minimal. Feel good TV!
For instance, one rich guy is online “dating” a Russian woman for 7 years. He went to Russia 5 times and each time she had an excuse why they couldn’t meet. All the appearances of a scam. He paid over $100K just to talk in an online chat platform with her. Why he just didn’t e-mail back and forth with her I don’t know, but that is where the naivete comes in. Why he’d keep pursuing her made no sense. He even had a private investigator tell him it was a scam and common. He’s 60 and she’s more than half his age and out of his league, but he has money. Amazingly, he went to Russia one more time to meet her and they finally met up to the surprise of everyone. She didn’t answer some pointed questions like, how much money he gave her.
Another couple is a guy with no neck with a gal that has bad breath and hairy legs. Another is a lesbian couple with one gal that is very jealous. One couple has a guy that opens his eyes so wide the whites of his eyes surround his pupils which usually happens when he gets caught in a lie or gets angry. Then you have Darcy who seems to find the arrogant guys while she is insecure. One women never met her guy or spoken to him and is most likely being catfished. One train wreck is a super jealous women with a rapper. The rapper is a real nice guy while the lady is hot-tempered, much older than him and a personality to match her looks. So bizarre.
The finale is tonight. The following week is the Wrap-Up show. Oy Vey! That show usually ends up being a carnival of emotions and opinions mixed in with couples fighting. It’s Jerry Springer minus the bell dinging. Get out your popcorn!
PLASTIC COUCHES
Growing up we put plastic on our couches. Well, I didn’t. My parents made that executive decision as did many others in that era.
Some of you might be too young to even know what I’m talking about. The plastic was a clear covering that fit over a couch to keep it from getting worn out and keep it looking pristine. After all, a couch was a big investment back then and a centerpiece for all guests to see. Big TV’s weren’t invented yet and when they were they eventually were the centerpiece for living rooms for families. That and tall speakers for your stereo. Keeping up with the Joneses.
The plastic was as bad as you think it was. It was hard, crinkly, and sticky as it made you sweaty. It made you not want to sit or lay on the couch…another under-handed way to keep the couch lasting for years past it’s expected lifetime.
How sad it was though. Here is a nice comfy couch that was made uncomfortable by a thin layer of plastic. Why not just let it get worn out and enjoy it for what it is? In life it seems we all try to make saving the best for another day. For instance, people plan to go on big vacations after they retire. Do a cruise. Go to Hawaii. Spend the money you earned your whole life. It doesn’t always work out that way. We’re finding out so with the coronavirus.
People have plans in life. Does life always go as planned? Nope! The saying goes, when people make plans, God laughs. He knows we are on paths that can and will change in a minute. There are lessons to be learned along the way. So take that vacation now. Enjoy life. It doesn’t even have to be about spending money. Enjoy what you have. You think work cares that you are there 12 hours a day? No, many will let you go in a minute no matter how hard you worked for them. Make sure there is a balance in your life. You can try your best to put “plastic” on your plans, but in the end you are in charge of making sure you don’t have any regrets.
