To avoid crowds during the Pandemic many stores are opting out of being open on Thanksgiving, including Kohl’s Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Target and others. Good chance there will be very few stores open on Thanksgiving this year aside from grocery and drug stores. So it looks like the only thing that will be crowded this year on Thanksgiving will be your stomach.
GET OUT
A recent glut of “small box discount” stores in Brunswick has led to a temporary moratorium on issuing occupancy permits to such businesses after a vote by the city council. The stores affected include any with 3,000- to 15,000-square-foot buildings that do not dedicate at least 15 percent of shelf space to fresh food and produce. Other cities, including Cleveland, are trying to put a halt to the glut of dollar stores that fit the mold and crowd out competition and limit quality products.
SALES TAX HOLIDAY
Ohio will have a sales tax holiday from Friday, August 7, 2020 at 12:00 a.m. to Sunday, August 9, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. No sales tax on specific items!
During the holiday, the following items are exempt from sales and use tax:
• An item of clothing priced at $75 or less;
• An item of school supplies priced at $20 or less; and
• An item of school instructional material priced at $20 or less.
Items used in a trade or business are not exempt under the sales tax holiday.
Some states offer sales tax holidays (dates and states may change year to year). Many states offer the tax holiday during the month of August since it takes place just before school starts. Most of the states don’t charge tax on clothes or school supplies for the tax holiday. GDP TANKS
The U.S. GDP tanked to a record drop of 34.9% in Quarter 2. Never has the GDP dropped that much and it follows a -5% Quarter 2. The stoppages from Covid excaberated a slowing economy that may not recover for years. Unemployment is 11.1%.

TRAINING
I stopped at Pet Supplies Plus to use some coupons. I had a $10 off $60 coupon from the back of a Giant Eagle receipt, five $2 Cat’s Pride litter coupons from Coupons.com, and $5 worth of free cans I got from filling out a survey. The problem is when I tried to redeem them I ran into a cashier being trained by someone that needed to be trained themselves.
My first clue things would go haywire was when I asked the training duo to price check a bag of cat food that was marked 75% off since there was no price on it. She said I would need my card to get the price. I told her that they wouldn’t need my card to get a price of the cat food. I obliged anyway and they still couldn’t get the price. Sometimes customers have to “train” cashiers the ways of the couponing world and how their systems work. They were young, so I can understand they wouldn’t always know how it works. It’s the way they were trained too. Plus I’ve seen way too many cashiers think they know the rules when they don’t. Better to correct them now so that they don’t leave a trail of unhappy customers.
They had to call a manager over to get the price checked. He was able to get it without using my card. However, the manager didn’t show them how to do it. I think I found the source of the initial problem with training.
I got the items I wanted and when I checked out the “trainer” said I could only use the one Cat’s Pride coupon. The coupon didn’t say a limit of one, so I fought her about it, but I got that cold stare that I was getting nowhere with her. So since I wasn’t getting the deal with the coupons and I didn’t want to fight a losing battle I told her to scratch the transaction. Startled her a bit. I could see she thought using the $10 coupon was dandy enough. Not for me. I had another reason too. I knew another store in the same chain always did me right with coupons.
Moral of the story. Battles are easier won when there is no enemy present.
