Kantar Media announced their findings on the number of coupons distributed in 2021. One stat many can attest to is that of the paper coupons available, only 16% were food coupons. Conversely, 65% of digital coupons were for food items. So no, you weren’t going nuts thinking there were so few paper food coupons.

Gas prices are jumping after Russia invaded the Ukraine, setting record highs in the U.S. and across the world. The U.S. average gas price has steadily increased from a decade low of $1.76 in February 2016. With the U.S. stopping import of oil from Russia they looked to other nations to fill the void to help lower prices. The U.S. has asked the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia to increase oil production. The UAE indicated they were open to the request and crude oil prices dropped the most in two years after the announcement.
The U.S. has also engaged Venezuala about importing oil from them again. Oil from Venezuela was embargoed in January 2019.

Congress’ 2015 lifting of the ban on oil and gas exports turned the U.S. into the largest producer in the world. There are 9,000 unused drilling permits, so U.S. production has the capacity to produce more oil. Many drillers stopped when oil futures dropped to below $0 in April 2020 at the start of the Covid Pandemic when demand decreased dramatically.

Due to the jump in gas prices, Giant Eagle announced earned gas Perks will be good through the end of the year. Normally, myPerks customers have at least 90 days to redeem perk rewards. The traditional fuelperks+ program has a 60-day period.

With Giant Eagle’s Advantage Pay you can get a discount of up to 30 cents more than the regular rate by tieing into the payment into your checking account. Find details at:

In order to zing sales, Kohl’s plans to add Sephora mini-shops to roughly 75% of its 1,100 US stores, open 100 new locations at half the size of its traditional outlets in the next four years and increase its popular Kohl’s Cash rewards program to 7.5% on purchases, up from 5%. Kohl’s has lost 17% of its market share since 2011, primarily to discount stores such as TJ Maxx, Amazon and rival clothing brands, so they are trying to evolve to meet shopper needs. They plan to add more fitness, athleisure and denim goods.

We took a trip to Arizona to see Spring Training. Well, that didn’t quite work out. Our plans went down the drain. Major League Baseball players decided to inconveniently go on strike just before we got there. The owners and players couldn’t come to any agreement, so we couldn’t see any games. No peanuts or Cracker Jacks or root rooting for the home team. We did get to see our players we hosted and filled in our time bopping around Arizona.

The minor leaguers were still training at the fields getting ready for their seasons. It’s only the players on the 40 man rosters that weren’t there. The 40 man roster consists of the Major League team roster and the best minor leaugue players. Teams can poach players from other teams that don’t “protect” their players that aren’t on the 40 man roster. It’s called the Rule 5 draft. One of our players we hosted, Richie Palacious, was put on the 40-man roster, so we didn’t get to see him. We did get to see our other players, Eli Lingos, Aaron Pinto and Jonathan Englemann.

We got a flight for $223 roundtrip on Southwest. Great deal, but even better when we also used part of the $400 voucher they gave us when they messed up our Maui flights last September. It only cost us $90 each roundtrip!

Hotel prices are nuts during Spring Training so I found a better price for lodging using AirBNB. Hotels were at least $200 or more a night. I got an AirBNB for only $60 total a night! We ended up getting an additional discount for booking for a week and another for being one of the first three to book a new property being listed.

With Arizona being so dry we went to Walgreens to get a 24 pack of water. It was only $2.99 and came in handy through the whole trip. I used my Walgreens Rewards money with the purchase.

Since we had more time to bop around we found some new spots that we’ve never been to. One was a stop in a town called Gilbert which has a cool downtown with a string of bars, restaurants, and shops. Of course, we were there during happy hour and hit up a couple places for the best ones there. I just Googled ‘happy hour Gilbert’ on my smartphone and they all popped up. Sometimes bars and restaurants have daily deals like half off wine bottles that aren’t listed on the happy hour deals, so we asked each whether there was one.

We made a trip up to Flagstaff. It’s located nearly 7,000 above sea level and was still cold enough to have snow most everywhere. It’s about 2 hours north of Phoenix. Cool little town with lots of shops and restaurants. Just like Sedona, it has a metaphysical vibe to it.

From there we went to Sedona. We visited Sedona some years back, but this time we did a major hike that took us an hour and a half to get to our destination, Devil’s Bridge. The hike itself was through shrubbery rocky terrain. To get up to the bridge you have to scale some steep steps. Devil’s Bridge is a narrow bridge outcrop that you walk to and one step too many to the left or right and you will find out what the canyon floor below looks like up close. The above is a picture of me standing on it. I had no takers to do a backflip for some coin.

After Sedona we went to Jerome, an old mining town known for its ghosts. On the way there we stopped at a winery called Tumbleweed in the town of Cottonwood. The town has a handful of wineries. So does Jerome. Tumbleweed has some real good wines. We did a premium tasting for $15 and our pourer gave us some tastes that weren’t on the list. One of them we bought. It was a bit pricey, but with the purchase they waived the $15 tasting fee!

Jerome is a bit of a freaky town. Very cool, but freaky. Lots of old buildings with a great vibe. A bunch of restaurant/bars fill out the town. We had to get something to eat and ended up at a place called Haunted Hamburger. Outside it had skeletons crawling on the building. Like I said, it has a freaky vibe and the restaurant was aptly named. Apparently the story is there is a ghost there that like to move around tools, especially hammers. The best part of it was that all sandwiches were half off and craft beer pints were $3! My kind of place. I got the salmon sandwich. Even better was their carrot cake. Get this. It was 2 pounds! Time to punch another hole on my belt! It cost $9.95 and was well worth it.

A winery in town is owned by the lead singer of Tool. It’s called Caduceus Cellars. Ok wine.

The hotel in town (shown above) is supposed to be one of the most haunted places around. It’s called the Jerome Hotel and was a hospital before it became a hotel. We were outside taking pictures and we hear a “Boo!”. Some gal on the top floor balcony was trying to be funny.

Of course, I had to sneak up to one of the floors to see what it was all about. I did pick up on a name while I was there I saw the letters HA and thought Hank and my wife’s name for some reason, but I thought that didn’t make sense because she was there with me. I later looked up the history of ghosts there and it said the most famous ghost was a maintenance guy that got crushed by a broken freight elevator. His name was Claude Harvey. My wife’s nickname is Claude. Yeah, wierd. I fit right in.

To burn off some calories and the two pound carrot cake we hiked Verrado Mountain a couple times. Great views from there overlooking the valley and Phoenix.

We used a ton of certificates. Some were popular local joints like Mike and Rhonda’s Place in Flagstaff (it felt like the food got there so fast they must have read our mind getting the food ready for us) and TJ’s Restaurant in Avondale.

I also used some Burger King coupons for some breakfast croissanwich deals. The coupons were what I got in the mail in Ohio and they were good in Arizona too.

We stopped in Scottsdale. It’s a great foodie town with lots of shops and restaurants in a walkable section of town. Some great happy hour deals like half off sushi at Geisha A GoGo and the Drunk Munk.

One downer was finding a hair on our sauerkraut ball order at a place called Brat Haus. They are big on allowing dogs there. Perhaps a shedding Mr Poodle was the chef for the evening.

DSC_0254 (2)

Gas prices varied from $4.19 to $3.49 while we were there. A Speedway in Cottonwood and Flagstaff was $3.49 per gallon, but most everything in the Phoenix area was near $4 per gallon. Using I was able to locate the best deals.

We rented a car through National. We used their rewards program called Emerald Aisle. You get to pick any car in it and just drive to the exit. As long as an Intermediate car is booked and you are signed up to the program you can take advantage of it. There were all kinds of cars to choose from, including minivans, pickup trucks and full-sized cars. I ended up with a Toyota RAV4 SUV. All for $311 for the week!.

If you go there, be aware that they sometimes shut down the freeway to do work on it. It happened when we got there on our way to the AirBNB and also on the way to the airport. However, it was on the opposite side we were driving. Caught a break there. The back-up was for miles and at a standstill. I would’ve had a kitten if it was shut down on our side going to the airport.

Weather was great for the most part. It was in the 70’s and 80’s most all week. One day it only got into the 60s and was rainy. At night it got cold into the 40s and 50s. Had we been there the week before we would’ve seen weather in the teens to thirties. They even got frost. The wild thing was that when we got home it was warmer in Cleveland than it was in Arizona! Yep, gotta love that off-kilter Cleveland change-by-the-hour weather.
