BLOOD ORANGES
Giant Eagle has been selling blood oranges at a big discount. Not sure why, but I won’t complain. I found them for 99 cents for a 3 lb bag at the Mentor store. They were $1.50 at the Willoughby store (they had Cotton Candy grapes for 99 cents a pound the other day). PLUS they have a 75 cent ecoupon on their web-site. So you could get a 3 lb bag for 24 cents! Crazy good deal. The price may change quickly, so get them while you can.
For those of you that have never had a blood orange, no it’s not because they are dipped in blood. It’s because they are like a regular orange, but have a red flesh. Maybe not the word I should use trying to explain why they are named blood oranges. Now I have it in your mind that they are fleshy and bloody. I think I just figured out why they are on sale for so cheap.

One of the best happy hours in Cleveland is at Luca at all three Luca restaurants. It’s not so much the price is the lowest for happy hour, but you get quality food and drinks for a very low price. Plus the restaurants have great views, good vibes, and decor. Acqua Di Luca recently added a happy hour and their happy hour menu has some top notch food choices. HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF
During the past couple years, we have all appreciated things more that we took for granted. Everything from toilet paper to eating at a restaurant or going to a concert. Calamatous events will do that. Even a Pandemic, in its daily inconveniences, is minor to some other world events. Just imagine the lives of people that went through WWI and WWII or the Great Depression. Today, it’s happening to the people of Ukraine while they suffer from a war they never wanted. There’s a chance the Russian invasion of Ukraine could turn into a nuclear war, involving many countries, so some nations may need to embrace such a reality.
Think about it. Here in the U.S. for the past almost 200 years we have escaped a major war on our lands. So many other countries have endured through war in recent years. The sound of a low-flying plane is a reminder to some about getting bombed. We don’t hear bombs dropped at all hours of the day, but what if we did?
The U.S. has seen an influx of people from lands ravaged by war or where dictators plunder their people. What if you had to escape from bombs? From soldiers shooting innocent people? What if you couldn’t find food and water and have electricity or heat? My ancestors had to escape from invading nations during WWII, fleeing their homes with what they could carry, just like the Ukrainians are doing now. If Russia decides to invade other nations, there is a chance history can repeat itself. Nations not in NATO know they could be in Russia’s crosshairs.
Russia is only 55 miles from Alaska. The U.S. bought Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million in 1867. Russia, having owned Alaska many years ago, could make the same claim that it really should be a part of their country as they are doing so now in the Ukraine. The world didn’t do much when Russia annexed Crimea from the Ukraine, figuring that portion of Ukraine is mostly Russian-speaking. Some of the U.S. is heavily Spanish-speaking – does that mean Mexico should have “rights” to those regions? Of course not, but that’s their logic. Now that Russia is trying to take over Ukraine, the world knows it could be a step into trying to overtake NATO countries and the start of WWIII.
The scary thing is that China can try to make a similar move to overtake Taiwain of whom China feels is theirs. The strategic Solomon Islands in the Pacific, after years of alliances with Australia and New Zealand, are making overtures with China. Could China and Russia flex their might together along with other rogue nations? It could happen, but let’s hope cooler heads will prevail.
Some of you may be wondering why, in a Coupon blog, am I writing about wars and such. Well, for one, I can blog about anything I want. But more importantly, I want people to not take things for granted and realize that a conflict on the other side of the world has financial and other implications here. Ukraine is the breadbasket of Europe and it will affect supply across the world just as gas prices have gone up because of what is happening there.
Be aware that there are bad players out there, making decisions on how it affects their power and finances. There was recent seditious behavior in our own country that could’ve taken huge wrong turns, going the way of dictatorial behavior and against election norms. Our leader at the time made calls to disband NATO, to the delight of Putin, and when Putin invaded the Ukraine, he praised him. He even held back military aid to Ukraine in order to curry supposed election favors, of which for he was impeached. The good thing is the U.S. is standing strong with its NATO partners now and the sanctions are proving tough for Russia.
The war Russia started is also not going well for them with many losses and poor morale. He is suppressing media that speaks ill of him and the war and spouts lies to control the narrative…sound familiar? He even said he was invading Ukraine to eliminate Nazis even though President Zelensky is Jewish and 73% of the country elected him. Putin, like Hitler, controlled the message, lies and all, he wanted people to hear to the point many didn’t stand up to him when they could. Any dissent was met with imprisonment, if not death. As they say, history repeats itself. Putin will not stop until he gets what he wants…unless the people of Russia put a stop to it. Pray that this all ends well.
