POWER OUTAGES
After the Florida hurricane hit there were tons of people without power. A helpful site shows where power is out in each state. It’s especially helpful trying to find the status of someone you are trying to contact. At one point over 2.6 million people were without power during hurricane Ian.

If you are ever without power, contact your utility company and report the outage. Sometimes everyone thinks that someone else contacted them to notify them of a power outage. Perhaps not, so report it when it happens and you can do it online instead of trying to get a hold of them through a phone maze. You can also report street lights that are out and trees on power lines.

MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE
The minimum wage in Ohio will increase from $9.30 to $10.10 an hour in 2023 for non-tipped workers. For tipped workers it will increase to $5.05 an hour. It’s adjusted annually for inflation to the Consumer Price Index due to a law passed in Ohio in 2006. The increase affects businesses with annual gross receipts of $371,000 or more. The Federal minimum wage remains at $7.25 an hour.
ITS ALL IN THE NAME
The Cleveland Guardians made the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Nobody expected them to do so well this year. They didn’t sign any big-name free agents even though they had a low payroll. They tried, but couldn’t get any free agent to sign with them. So instead, they let their youngsters from the minors play. It was a move that kept rewarding them.
One of the best finds was an unassuming outfielder. Stephan Kwan, after a hot start that cooled, he then caught fire again. He was one of the best rookies and solidified the top spot in the order. Every game he would find ways to get on base. I met him and his parents when we visited one of our players we hosted when he played in Lynchburg. The parents were a hoot. Very funny. One of the players we hosted believes he will win the batting title one of these years. Seems like something that will happen.
Another youngster that was a find, Oscar Gonzalez, could have been taken in the Rule 5 draft (for you non-baseball lingo people, lets just say it is a temporary minor league free agency). They cancelled the draft this past year, so he remained with the team. He is a solid hitter. When we were in Columbus to see the AAA team the Clippers play I would hear the Sponge Bob song play and wonder what it was all about. Turns out that is Oscar’s walk-up song. Most players have some solid song that motivates them play just before they are up to bat. Oscar went with fun. And that seems to be what embodies this team…they are tons of fun to watch. Great play. Solid baseball fundamentals. Hustle.
Speaking of Oscar, I was at the second playoff game and I told my cousin about halfway through the 15 inning game that Oscar would hit a home run to win it and it would be hit in right-center field. I got the most important part of that right as he hit a homer to win it 1 – 0!
Jose Ramirez, their best hitter and one of the best in MLB, signed a club-friendly contract. Andres Gimenez was an all-star this year. Clase, their closer, was an all-star too. They traded Kluber for him. People freaked because Kluber was well-liked, but in reality he started to exhibit diminishing skills after some injuries. Turns out the team traded him at the right time. Kluber’s done ok, but nothing like he was when he played for the Indians. Clase has been lights out. Our bullpen is tough.
Remember Trevor Bauer and Clevinger? Franmil Reyes? Gone. All-stars themselves, so why get rid of them? They partly left because they didn’t get with the program. Not listening to what the coaches are telling you will get you a ticket out of town. They were affecting team chemistry. Sometimes it’s addition by subtraction. Now we have a young team that can stick together for years. Some of the players we got for them in trades are our starters now.
So does having a high payroll mean the chances of getting to the playoffs is better? This year, yes. Of the top 12 payrolls in baseball, 9 of those teams made the playoffs. The Guardians had the third lowest payroll. Their payroll is around $80 million, about $200 million less than the top payroll team (New York Mets). Tampa Bay was 6th lowest and tend to make the playoffs even when they perennially have a low payroll. It’s tends to be the exception rather than the rule. Some teams just get a lot of bang for their buck and manage their roster well.
Sometimes the teams with the highest payrolls don’t make the playoffs. Injuries happen. Bad chemistry or management ruins a team. In baseball, paying a player tons of money doesn’t guarantee their stats will be commensurate to their income.
I wonder if they ever paid a player for each hit, etc. would it work? Say, a double will earn you $2,000. Strike out a guy, get $1,000. I’d like to see something similar to that on my job too. Hey, Joe we’ll give you 10% of what you save they company and here’s $300K for the $3 million you just saved the company. Unfortunately, seems like some companies want to pay for a bunt when you hit a home run. Rookies do get paid a low salary in their early years and only start making millions years into playing in the bigs. Minimum wage can turn into maximum in no time. Let’s hope the Guardians and Cleveland are rewarded for their efforts with a World Series win!
One last thing. Remember when the team’s name changed from the Indians to the Guardians and everyone was up in arms. Could it be that the team removed of curse of some sort by switching the name and that is what has led to their unexpected quick success? What if they win the World Series? World Series Champions Cleveland Guardians sounds pretty good to me.
