PRICING GIMMICKS
Stores sometimes confuse shoppers into believing they are getting a better deal than they really are. For instance, Buy One Get One 50% off. Is that a good deal? No, it’s only 25% off each item. They used to never advertise a BOGO deal as anything but BOGO (buy one get one free). They could just say 25% off, but they know the BOGO triggers people into thinking it’s a good deal.

Another deal you will see is ‘Get an Additional 20% off’. So, a 50% off deal with an Extra 20% off is 70% off? Nope. It’s 60% off. As an example, if an item costs $10 and it’s 50% off that makes it $5. An extra 20% off the $5 is $1 making it $4 or a total 60% off. The extra 20% is not off the original price or combined with the 50% off, but just off the discounted price.

A trick done by restaurants is to offer a bonus gift card if a gift card is purchased. Problem is the bonus card is usually for a specific time frame, usually for one to three months in the future. So if you buy a gift card deal now the bonus card may only be good Jan 1 to March 31. Sometimes the bonus cards can’t be combined too.

An advertising gimmick used by many stores is to state the sale is ‘the lowest prices of the season’. Does that mean the Thanksgving season? That month? All summer? As compared to another season? The lowest price of the year is more impressive.

Grocery stores try this trick to get people to pay more for produce. What they do is charge more for one fruit rather than a bag. At Target they sell bananas individually. So if they charge 50 cents for a banana it may seem like an ok deal. However, one banana may weigh only half a pound. Most stores sell bananas at 59 cents a pound or less (at Aldi it’s 16 cents a pound!). So you are usually paying at least double when stores sell produce individually. Same goes for lemons or oranges. Do the math and you’ll find a bag of each costs much less if sold individually.

A subconscious way stores get people to buy more is to play upbeat feel-good music. Just like doctor’s offices play calming music to settle down patients, a store knows a happy customer listening to positive music will want to buy more. Hence, the reason you don’t hear death metal music while you shop at your local grocery store.

Don’t get fooled by these gimmicks. Stores know math is not the strong suite of many and they exploit it and they find ways to get you to buy more in ways you aren’t aware. Plus they pump magic pixie dust in the air of their stores to hypnotize us into buying their products. Just kidding with that one. No really, just kidding. Nowadays, some people will believe just about everything.

TO LET IT BE OR NOT TO LET IT BE
How do you handle difficult people? Let them be? Or do you square up with them to make sure they are aware of their shortcomings, so that they can work on them? The holidays are coming up and many people are full of anxiety knowing they will have to deal with challenging people.

Sometimes with toxic people in your life you have to choose to keep them at a distance. No matter what you try they just won’t change. For those that truly want to change for the better, there is hope.

We all know that stubborn person whose mind is made up. Good chance they will be at the dinner table during Thanksgiving. Blood pressure medication comes in handy, but what can you do to make things work. Understanding them is a first step.

So what causes difficult people? Some are just born that way. A parent may treat all their children the same way, but one might turn into a hellion while the others are angels. Some kids grow up entitled, sheltered, undisciplined, abused, or spoiled and that is hard to unravel. People are the product of their environment and at no fault of their own. One generation, in essence, teaches the next generation those same behaviors and it’s hard to break out of those cycles without some serious changes in thought and behavior patterns.

The way people cope and protect themselves is a byproduct of a rough upbringing. Most people have some disfunctional behavior in their family, including those that are alcoholic, physically and/or verbally abusive members, narcissitic, and distant. A young child seeing those behaviors will ultimately finds ways to cope with it and not always in good ways. Others will lash out at society. Some even turn to gangs just to feel a belonging. Some will seek professional help to get them through it all.

Sometimes parents are well-meaning trying to be nice to their kids because of their own poor upbringing, but long-term and in their future relationships, it is harmful. It doesn’t get them ready for real life. They might turn to drugs or crime when they don’t get their way or rebel as adults. The company they keep strings that behavior along.

What emboldens bad behavior is some people only surround themselves with like-minded people and they will have a hard time accepting anything different than what they believe, facts or not. They come at you like an angry hornet when you question those hardheld beliefs. I don’t know anyone that is always right, so best to be open-minded.

Another reason is people don’t want to tell those that have strong beliefs that they are wrong. Is it worth the trouble to tell a good friend or family member what they need to hear rather than what they want to hear? Some avoid confrontations because it’s not worth the trouble. Isn’t that how monsters get created? Nipping those behaviors in the bud will save from having to deal with the intensified behavior later on.

Some people don’t have many friends. By friends I mean a friend that will tell it like it is when necessary. Nobody wants to hear whats wrong with themselves, but a true friend will let you know when you need some straightening up and isn’t afraid of the backlash they will get. That also means accepting the criticism and appreciating the opportunity to work on fixing a bad behavior.

Bullies are another difficult personality that everyone runs into. Putting a bully in their place is not easy. Dealing with the repercussions of not doing so can be even worse, especially as more time goes by and they become entrenched in their behaviors. Standing up to a bully seems to be the best medicine.

We all don’t have the same path in life. We all make mistakes and learn from them. Understanding what others have been through can be helpful in coping with difficult people. They have to find ways to heal. Some can be a conduit to their healing. Just like you can lead a horse to water, but can’t make it drink, those crying out for help have to want it. That’s the first step.

This Thanksgiving we will all be faced with replying…or not…to that family member with strong opinions or behaviors or those crying out for help without directly asking for it. How we respond to them tells a lot about ourselves and that person. What’s the right thing to do that will fix the problem long term? Here’s hoping the best for your holidays and beyond. Just make sure you pass the gravy before you take a stand!
