Sales ads took another hit. Starting in January 12, Giant Eagle will no longer be mailing its weekly ad out to homes in the Cleveland market. Instead, it will start emailing the ad to customers. Their ad will be available online. Giant Eagle already stopped their paper ads in the Columbus area.

Other stores stopping their sales ads in newspapers include CVS, Target, and Walgreens. Their ads are now digital-only. Rite Aid is taking a different angle. Rite Aid has ads in newspapers, but not in stores.

Not all seniors have smartphones, so they are at a disadvantage. Many aren’t technically savvy either. Being on fixed incomes, they may not have the finances to get all the electronic gadgets needed to electronically get the deals too.

Printed coupons are also being ditched by Procter & Gamble. They will stop sending their brandSAVER inserts in newspapers in 2023. Their coupons will be available online. Could other coupon inserts be next!? Let’s hope not.

My preference is paper ads. They are much easier to read than online. Paper coupons are also easier to get multiples of than getting them online. Having to go to each stores site to “clip” electronic coupons can be time-consuming and a pain if the site has technical glitches. If I find a deal at CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens I may not be able to find coupons to clip electronically for each of those stores whereas, I could get more newspapers to clip coupons for each of those stores. They are all trying to cut costs by eliminating printed ads and coupons. It’s much cheaper to have them available electronically. On a good note, less trees are needed to create the paper for each. But again, to me, I find it much easier using the paper versions of ads and coupons.

In the meantime, the best electronic ads site for stores can be found on a site called Flipp. They post all the local ads on their site for easy viewing. Find them at

Raise your hand if you like to travel to warm places when it gets cold here. Yeah, me too. This winter trip had us going someplace warm again and back to one of our faves, Maui. This trip was memorable in many ways and not always good.

I found a flight to Maui for $465 roundtrip. I’ve found better, but it was still a great deal since fights have been expensive. I get notified of deals to Maui and other cities with alerts from and

Our flight was at 5:30 am. We got up at 2:00 am. A bit rough, but we didn’t want any issues with flights and the first flights of the day tend to go off without a hitch. The flights were on time, but apparently my lack of sleep caused me to make a flub to start of the trip that freaked me out.

After going through TSA I was holding onto my license and the boarding pass and we rushed over to get something to eat. I put away my license or so I thought. When I went to pay I noticed it wasn’t there. Panic time. I rushed over to where we were at to see if I dropped it. I then rush over to TSA and they said they didn’t have it. I rifled through my wallet a bunch trying to find it. Checked my pockets. Nothing. Now I’m getting frantic. I go back to my wallet and notice the edge of my license showing..behind the window portion. In my haste I didn’t notice I put it in the sleeve behind it. I now need to take a shower from all the freaking-out sweat.

Hotels are getting real expensive in Maui because they have added more fees to make it less affordable so that they can limit the number of visitors. Unfortunately, they are doing a good job of it. The average daily hotel room rate in Maui County last month was $528 while vacation rentals were $343. I did find the same condo we normally go to for a good deal at around $200 a night total.

We got a rental car through National via their Emerald Aisle program. With the Emerald Aisle you just pick any car in that row and you get it for a mid-sized car price. When we got there there wasn’t any convertibles like I wanted. I asked the attendant if there were any we could choose. She said yes! Bazinga! There were two in a different row and we took the one without leather seating. Nothing like getting seared from hot leather in a sunny climate.

A first for me happened while snorkeling. I was filming a moray eel. It was a bit wavy, so I was spinning around some while filming it. All of a sudden I felt a pinch on my back shoulder near my arm and I swung around to see what it was. I didn’t see anything. I kept spinning around to see what it was and if anything was there. I’ve felt pinches while I’ve been snorkeling, but this one felt different. It even felt like a fin brushed up against me. I took a few more pics and then made my way back around the coral and back to shore.

I had my wife check the area on my back and sure enough, she saw two punctures from teeth and half a semi-circle from an upper mouth. The semi-circle was about the circumference of a small plate. Not something huge that could swallow me in a bite, but big enough. I’m not that delicious, so it probably took one taste of me before it decided to take off. Me spinning around biffed it enough that it decided to leave. Most likely, I was in its territory and it decided to attack me with a bite to let me know I wasn’t welcome.

Here is where it got if getting bit by a mystery fish isn’t enough. We found out about news of a 10 to 12 foot tiger shark attacking a snorkeler just north of the beach we were at the day before where I got bit. A couple was snorkeling about 50 yards off shore when they were attacked. The husband couldn’t find the wife so he went back to shore to call 911. He said he fought it some. They found a snorkel and he bathing suit, but not her after a search. Sad.

The day it happened we were not at the beach and instead went to a winery and then went hiking. As we were driving to the hiking spot I saw a helicopter and told my wife it was odd it was flying because it was a very windy day and risky for it to be flying. We found out it was looking for the body along with a search party on jet skis.

Speaking to a lifeguard I asked about the bite and they weren’t sure what it could be. He said there was barracuda in the water and thought maybe that is what it was. The bite mark wasn’t an imprint of what I found was a barracuda bite. I’ve swum around tons of barracuda when I go snorkeling and none have bothered me. It takes only one cranky one to change all that.

Tiger sharks are known to be aggressive. Best not to snorkel in waters that are murky from sand as they can’t discern if you are food for them or a human. The wind was bad and stirred up the water. Sharks tend to attack in cloudy water and also at night and early morning.

Two different times at different beaches before the attack occurred I overheard some kids talking about how sharks don’t eat humans. It seemed like they were trying to convince themselves not to worry about sharks. It should have been a warning to me along with the mystery fish bite that I might want to be a bit wary about going out in the water.

DSC_0749 (2)

He also said that Hawaiians know not to spend time in the water when whales are in season. Part of the reason is that whales and other marine life mate around the winter months and that is a time when sharks and other predators come to Maui and spend time making meals of the afterbirth of whales and young pups of other marine species. It even has a name. It’s called Makahiki.

The underwater camera I used busted on me while I was snorkeling. Water got in the case. A bummer since I saw a couple octopuses that I missed filming. There was an option to get a camera for free! We stopped at a Boss Frog beach equipment rental site and the salesperson there said we could get a GoPro free for the week and $200 if we went to a Hilton time share session. As tempting as it was I ended up passing on it. I’ve done a time share session before and got the money and left in a previous trip, but the last thing I want to do is spend time in Hawaii listening to high-pressure salesman on something I don’t want. Once is enough for the experience. I checked the stores there to see what was available and settled on a GoPro at Walmart. The functionality was a lot worse than the Fuji camera I had, so I ended up returning it at the end of the trip.

We did see some whales on an excursion we took using a Groupon. Only $39 per person! We saw a couple humpback whales. Plus we saw spinner dolphins right in front of the ship where we were sitting. They like to swim along the front of boats.

The price of groceries was crazy. A gallon of milk was $8. A dozen eggs were $7. Salad bags were up to $8. Cereal was up to $8. There were ways around finding deals. I saw the salad bags that were expiring for $1.99. We got a berry pie at Safeway and blueberry bagels at Foodtown for half off on their day old rack. At a coffee shop on the way to the winery we picked up few day old $1 lemon, apple, and coconut bars. All tasted super fresh.

Maui Fish

Long Drugs, part of the CVS chain, had some great deals. Cereal was on sale for $1.99 just like in the mainland stores. They had deals on Mauna Loa chocolate covered macadamia nuts. A box was on sale for $3.69. At the airport it was $10! A bag of Maui coffee was on sale there for $4.99. At the airport the same one was $25! I found 75% off items on clearance. I got Hefty Ziploc bags (great for shampoos and leakable items in medicine bags as some pop open during flight) for $1.50 after I clipped a $1/2 coupon on the CVS site. I used my Extrabucks and an $8 off $40 coupon CVS sent me via email.

We hit the happy hours that we found organized on a site called Maui Happy Hours at

Some places had half off drinks (Fleetwoods in Lahaina), half off appetizers (Lava Rock In Kihei), half off sushi (Sansei), and various other drink and food specials. The magazines at the airport had some coupons we used too.

At Fleetwoods restaurant, owned by Mick Fleetwood From Fleetwood Mac, there was a memorial for Chrisine McVie from the band. She passed just before we left on our trip. The above pic is a memorial for her they had at their gift shop.

I used the Entertainment book (digital version) for deals at Wow Lemonade for BOGO menu items and at other restaurants. Previously, if you travelled to a city you would have the buy the Entertainment book for that city. With the book being digital you can pull up the coupons for all coupons in the U.S. It makes it a great deal. You can buy it for $2.99 per month or $24.99 annually plus a free 30 day trial.

Puffs of ash clouds from the erupting Mauna Loa volcano.

As I’ve nentioned before, there seems to always be a natural disaster around the time of our trip. Just before we left for Hawaii, the Big Island’s Mauna Loa volcano erupted for the first time in about 40 years. Then, a day after we flew out of Dallas back home they had a tornado alert and told people at the Dallas Fort Worth Airport to find a secure place. I should alert people to where we travel! Even on the flight home they kept announcing the need for medical people on the flight. A passenger was having a medical issue and the flight attendant said he was most likely having to go to the hospital after the flight. Medical issues sometimes mean the flight will re-route and go to the nearest airport to drop the person off to get medical attention. Hard to turn around when you are in the middle of the ocean.

One odd thing about being in Maui. It’s sunny and warm outside and it’s decorated for Christmas now. Hard to feel Christmas-y when there is no snow or cold. Even the mall is open air along with many other facilities, including the airport. They still sell live Christmas trees. At Lowes they were on sale for around $70. I’d think with the perfect weather there all you’d have to do is press a pine tree seed into the soil and it’d grow full size in about a week. My belly also grew to full-sized Santa-level too after over a week there eating and drinking.
