Walgreens has watered down their deals and limited their reward offerings over the past recent years. Their sales have been lackluster, so they finally realized their shoppers are getting turned off and shopping elsewhere. READY FOR RETIREMENT?
Around 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck. Living on the cusp of being broke causes many not to be able to save for retirement. All the more reason to start couponing and only buy items when they are on sale. Yet, it may be too late for some to save enough for retirement.
Studies have shown just over half of Generation X (those born between 1965 and 1980) have little to nothing saved for retirement. Trying to save for retirement at the end of a career poses issues. Some plan to never retire and just work their whole life. With some forethought into saving for retirement, working forever can be avoided. It’s best to control what you can with careful financial planning.
The most recent data found that the average retirement savings for those aged 65 to 74 was $426,000 and $357,000 for those aged 75 and older. That’s the average, so that means someone with $1 billion and 9 people with $5 in savings averages to $100 thousand dollars. Not a true picture of reality. The median gives a truer picture. The median amount would be $5 and not $100 thousand dollars. The median is the middle number of a sorted list of numbers.
The Federal Reserve data shows that 65 to 74-year-olds have a median of $164,000 in their retirement accounts while those 75 and older have $83,000 saved for retirement.
One medical event can eat up all the savings. Hence, besides having enough for retirement, having the right health insurance is a must.
If your company matches your investment in your 401K it’s best to have at least that percentage of your income invested. Most companys usually match 6% of your income.
We never know how old we’ll live and exactly how much we’ll need in retirement. Not having enough in retirement can make for difficult years financially later in life. However, life can throw many curves even if you plan perfectly and save tons of money for retirement. I just found out a co-worker that is around my age was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and may have months to live. Tragic.

PUTTING ON A SHOW
Our first player we hosted from the Lake County Captains was Sicnarf Loopstok from Aruba. Yes, that’s his real name. His first name is his Dad’s name backwards. He’s still playing baseball, but with the Ottawa Titans. He was playing for the Lake Erie Crushers in Avon, but got traded a week into the season. His first game with Ottawa he hit a walk-off grand slam. That’s impressive, but I think he topped it this past week when we went to see him play when Ottawa came to town.
It’s been probably 5 years or so since we last saw him. I got to talk with him before the game. Beforehand I let him know I was available to pinch-hit. I told him we would also be ok with sitting in the dugout with him. I had to get my fill of Dad jokes with him to let him know I still had a good sense of humor.
He was batting clean-up. When he came to bat we were hooting and hollering. The fans around us were wondering why we were going nuts when he was at bat. His first pitch he cranked the ball over the left field wall. Home run! After he crosses the plate he points to us. Made us feel special.
The next at bat I tell him to now hit a homerun for my friend, Kevin. Sicnarf met him when he was with us. I know he got a kick out of him, so I figured he may just hit a homerum for him. He gets up to bat. He gets a fastball. Wham! Another home run over left field! Wow! Again, he points to us after he crosses home plate. Now everyone around us is asking us about him.
The next at-bat I tell him it’s my birthday the next day. This time he gets a single and gets another run home. I guess my birthday wasn’t going to get him to muster up another homerun. I’m still jazzed because he is on fire and driven in all their runs.
He gets one more at-bat and sure enough he gets on base gets his 4th RBI. They win it 4 to 2.
He made the All Star game for the league. He’s was hitting around .340 which is incredible for a catcher. His defense has gotten much better. He still calls a great game for the pitcher. At 30 years of age, he knows that any chance of making the majors is slim.
Earlier in the year he was on the Netherlands National team playing in the World Baseball Classic. Another player we hosted and recenty traded from the Guardians, Richie Palacios, played for them too. Sicnarf’s cousin did too, Chadwick Tromp. Chadwick played for the Atlanta Braves some this year.
One day Chadwick was in town playing against Lake County and I picked him up after the game to hang out with Sicnarf. We went on a bikeride to see if either of them could get up this crazy hill on Hobart Road in Waite Hill. I told them go slow because you won’t get up it otherwise. Chadwick got up it and I think was the only other person I know that did besides myself at that time. It’s like walking up a wall it’s so steep. Sicnarf didn’t make it. After the game he had I think he’s been climibing other mountains.
