VINTAGE OHIO
Vintage Ohio is August 4 & 5, 2023 from Noon to 9 P.M. at Lake Metroparks Farmpark at 8800 Euclid Chardon Rd in Kirtland. Tickets in advance cost $37 and include wine tastings. At the gate the price will be $42. Non-Drinker/Designated Driver tickets are $10. Tickets for children from ages 4-17 are $4 and those 3 and under are free.

There are some decent wine from Ohio. The late frosts have hurt some harvests, but you can still find quality wine at certain wineries. One of my new favorites is the Montepulciano at Laurello. It was a Platimum award winner in the Ohio Wine Competition. To be fair the grapes are not from Ohio, but from Temecula in California (just north of San Diego and west of LA – great wines in that region). If the grapes are from Ohio the bottle with say ‘Estate’ on it.
Another winery changed hands some years ago. That being St Joseph and is now Baci Winery. It’s on Route 307. The place has been completely redone and is real sharp looking with plenty of outdoor seating. Wines are ok. They still sell some of the old St Joseph wines which was known for their Pinot Noir.

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE HITS HISTORIC LOWS
Impressively, the unemployment rate for 21 states hit historic lows last month, including Ohio at 3.4%. Four other hit lows in May. So half the states recently hit historic lows. What makes its even more impressive is that 45 states hit historic unemployment HIGHS in 2020, just a few years ago. Ohio hit a high of 16.4% in April 2020 and lost 884,200 jobs.
Ohio also recovered all the jobs it lost during the COVID-19 pandemic in May and is now 11,400 jobs ahead of where it was in February 2020. The labor participation rate for the US was nearly 63%, about what it was before Covid. In Ohio, the labor participation rate was at 62.1%.
In a good sign, real wages (wages adjusted after inflation) increased back-to-back months for the first time since early 2021. With record low unemployment and record Corporate profits and inflation cooling it’s a recipe for more increases in real wages. Inflation dropped from around 9% in June 2022 to 3% in June 2023. Many financial analysts predicted a recession by now and there’s a chance it may not happen anytime soon.
Strikes are now back in vogue while corporations try to fight off having to pay workers more. Workers are tired of being taken advantage of after taking concessions during economic downturns and now want fair treatment, especially with corporations making record profits and stock prices increasing. Many workers took pay cuts during the Pandemic that put them further behind. With low unemployment there aren’t many workers available to fill the role of workers on strike, so the power is on the workers side. For instance, UPS workers were ready to go on strike, but they have struck a tentative deal as they got what they wanted.
Other workers were ready to go on strike and many have settled. United pilots got up to a 40% raise. FedEx pilots rejected a 30% pay increase. Pilots are in such demand that they know they can lose their job and find another one in a minute. The writers and actors are still on strike. The UAW is planning a strike. Many Starbucks locations have unionized. Nonetheless, unions have shrunk to about 10% of the working population. The trend downward in union membership may change if corporations aren’t pro-active. A stew of bad management, greedy corporations and an unappreciative work environment are ingredients for unions to grow in numbers.
BOTTLE OF WINE BONANZA
We usually enjoy a bottle of wine with dinner. A good bottle at a restaurant used to cost around $20 to $25. Now it’s tough to find them under $30. We know where to find deals on bottles of wine and this past week I got one for a ridiculously low price.
We stopped at Red, Wine, & Brew in Mentor to use my birthday coupon there for food. I noticed they had a rack of wine with bottles reduced in price by 25%. We came across one that was a Stone Cellars Cab. The vintage was from 2017 which was a great year for California reds. The price tag on the bottle…$5.99 and then with the discount it was only $4.82! They let you drink the bottle at the restaurant there with no corkage fee, so that’s even less than the happy hour price for a glass of wine!
The problems with cheap bottles of wine is that, well, they usually taste cheap too. Barefoot wines and some others fall into that category. To me, Barefoot wines is appropriately named…their wine tastes like bare feet. Not my cup of tea. I prefer my wines not to remind me of feet or elbows and shoulders for that matter too.
Speaking of cheap wine, Two Buck Chuck wine (Charles Shaw) was a rarity. It was first introduced at Trader Joes and it not only a was good wine, but it sold for a paltry $2 a bottle. It’s now costs up to $4 a bottle. Still a deal for California wine. Over 1 billion bottles of it have been sold.
The waiter opened the bottle and I took a whiff of the wine before tasting it. Smelled ok, but will it taste decent? I took a sip and it was decent. Not a big red, but also not light with no flavor and not a hint of feet. It had some spice to it and was fruit forward. I’ve had bottles over $30 that tasted much worse.
What you pay for retail at Red, Wine & Brew is what it costs you which is rare for any restaurant that sells retail bottles. One thing recently changed there was they now charge 2.45% if you use a credit card. I had a gift card from a special they ran, so in essence I got it for even cheaper. Nothing like getting a bottle of wine for about the same price as a gallon of gas and it tastes much better than gas.
