NATURAL GAS PRICES DROP
Natural gas rates are tumbling. Natural gas prices this month fell to an inflation-adjusted 30-year low of $1.59 per thousand cubic feet. A mild winter and record supplies have increased supplies and lessened demand, so prices dropped. That means if you are on a fixed rate you are probably paying a much higher price for natural gas. Check Nopec or other suppliers to compare rates. I called and switched mine to the variable rate. It takes a month or two to take effect with NOPEC. It’s usually longer is you are signed up with a supplier and there may be termination fees. With NOPEC there are no termination fees.

NOPEC guarantees charging $0.02/Mcf less than the utility’s monthly Standard Choice Offer (SCO) price. Enrollment is limited and subject to availability. Not all communities participate with NOPEC. If not, you can find other suppliers other than Dominion or Columbiana or whoever you use currently.

Here are NOPEC’s February rates:
Standard (Fixed) – $4.41 per MCF
Monthly Variable – $2.86 per MCF
12-Month Fixed – $4.29 per MCF
24-Month Fixed – $4.49 per MCF

PRICE CHANGES
Prices change according to supply and demand. Companies charged more when supplies became scarce. As supplies returned to normal levels prices didn’t so much go down with it. That could be changing.

Consumers can back off spending on items that have increased in price too much. Sales of the product decrease thus hurting a company’s profits. If it happens enough, the company will need to reconsider their pricing strategy. McDonald’s just announced that they will make their food more affordable. They have noticed customers have reduced their spend, so they plan to reduce their prices to lure them back.

An item sold in grocery stores is a good harbinger of prices to come. Rotisserie chickens are sold at food stores at prices to lure customers to stop in that day for their groceries. Have you noticed that many stores have dropped their everyday price on them a buck or two?

The one item I’m waiting on that will indicate to me that prices have reverted back is Coke and Pepsi. A 2 liter could be had for a dollar a few years ago. I can find it for $1.25 or $1.50, but not a dollar. Although last year Meijer did have it for $1 on a 10 for $10 sale. No other stores followed with the same price for it, so it hasn’t turned the corner just yet.

Companies have taken advantage of the supply issue too. They have kept prices high even though their costs have gone down. The proof is that most companies have had record profits. Gas is a good example. Even though the price of barrel of crude oil has hovered in the $70 range for the past year the price has fluctuated between $2.50 and $3.50. The price has changed 40% even though the price of a barrel has changed 10% at the most. Something is amiss!

BAG FEE INCREASES
American Airlines will be charging $40 to check the first bag when a customer is doing it at the airport, $35 if done online, previously $30. American also won’t allow miles to be earned if flights are booked from certain third-party sites.

United will charge $5 more for a checked bag raising their rate to $35 if paid online at least 24 before the flight and $40 thereafter. Second bag fees will increase $5 too to $45 online or $50 at the airport.

Getting airline credit cards usually waive bag fees for the first bag. Southwest still allows two checked bags for free.

BIRTHDATES
This month includes a leap year birthday, February 29th. It happens once every 4 years. It’s a rare day for a birthday. The least births happen on Jan 1. Perhaps it’s because most mom’s try to pop out a baby on Dec 31st for tax purposes. Which are the days with the most birth dates?

The Most popular birthdates are:
Sept 9

Sept 19

Sept 12
Sept 17
Sept 10
July 7
Sept 20
Sept 15
Sept 16
Sept 18

August is the most common birthday month. February is the least. With most of the days with the most birthdates in September you’d think September would be the most popular month. Early September there aren’t many birthdates while August is conistently on the higher side. Just go back 9 months to figure out which holiday or event might be the cause of people to get frisky. Looks like Christmas-time is popular.

PUERTO RICO TRIP
We took a trip to Puerto Rico. Usually, we spend a day or two there before or after a cruise, but this time we decided to spend over a week just there. However, we almost went on another cruise instead of staying in Puerto Rico.

In the months leading up to the trip I was eyeballing a cruise that started the day after we got there. I intentionally got a Wanna Get Away Plus fare with Southwest if we had to change our flight on the Sunday when the cruise would get back. It was slated to leave at 6:55 am, too early if we took the cruise, but the fare allowed us to change the flight without an extra charge.

Sure enough the cruise went from nearly $2,000 per person that included a freebie package (drinks, internet, etc) to under $400 for an inside cabin just before the cruise and that also included the freebies. The problem was we were already past cancellation dates for some of the places we were staying. The costs were about the same, except our drinks and food would be free on the cruise. As tempting as it was we decided to stick with the original trip.

P2160417

The whole reason we went to Puerto Rico was because of a 50% sale on Southwest. The deals were crazy good. They had a flight to Seattle for $134 roundtrip, but we decided on a warm trip to PR for only $182 roundtrip.

Our first stop was to the El Yunque Rainforest. I found a perfect AirBNB at the base of the rainforest. Very cool backyard and cheap! With fees and taxes it was only $324 total for three days.

We hiked up some waterfalls and hiked a little. Great views of the eastern and northern part of the island. We swam in a section that had a small waterfall.

DSC_0099

At our place we came across a Coqui frog. They are indigenous to only Puerto Rico. As I took a pic of one of them the bugger lifted its leg to pee on me. It missed.

P2110040

We took a trip to a lagoon known for a bio luminescent phenomena. We kayaked to the lagoon at night with a group of around 30 people through an excursion we booked through Viator. At times as the paddle hit the water you could see sparks of blue appear in the water. As we got to the lagoon they had us pull a blanket over us and put our hand in the water to splash around. Flashes of blue would appear. It was very cool. Of course, I had to wonder if I drank them would I see them appear in my body.

I noticed a lot of houses had bars on them. I thought it had to do with security, but I was wrong. It was for protection from hurricanes. There is a lot of debris that flies around, so having the bars up keep windows from getting smashed. We talked to locals about the hurricane and there were many horror stories. One lady told us she didn’t have water at her home for three months and power was out for five months. They had to stand in day long lines just to get money from the bank. She said the storm cut all the trees in half. Surprisingly, everything looked pretty normal. I didn’t see much damage left over from the hurricane.

P2120244

We took a ferry over to Culebra island. Only $4.50 roundtrip on the ferry! The swells were a bit much. A lady in front of us filled a grocery bag. There were a few other people looking like they were gonna yark. Luckily, we didn’t get hit by any flying nuggets.

P2120200

We went to go to Flamenco beach on Culebra, but because of the high waves they didn’t allow people in the water, so we went to a nearby beach. Across the way was a yacht and sailing ship owned by Jeff Bezos from Amazon. The island was cozy.

P2150380

Outside of Old San Juan we found a beach. I went snorkeling there and found some odd items. I found two rings, a full egg, and China (a plate and not the country). The one ring had an inscription in it and said ‘only love you’. I’m surprised the egg wasn’t cracked because the beach was rocky with a lot of waves. Later I found out that area was known for hammerhead sharks. Perhaps that ring used to be on a person dined on by a shark! There was a rocky outcrop across the whole beach where waves crashed over, so I don’t think the hammerheads swam in that section…or maybe they did.

OSJ Tub

We stayed in Old San Juan at the Casablanca hotel. They have huge stone tubs on their roof. We got to enjoy the Caribbean sun in them. We booked the hotel through Hotels.com. They were having wifi issues, enough so that they took 10% off our bill!

One trick to get great deals on souvenirs is to go to a local grocery store. For instance, at souvenir stores a package of coffee is usually $10 to $15, if not more. I found the same coffee for $2.69 to $2.89 at a local grocery store. Guess what everyone got for souvenirs?

P2120161

Some places had happy hour pricing on drinks. Last time we were there in Old San Juan there were also food deals. Not as much this time. I had my fill of mojitos.

P2120285

I stopped at Walgreens and got a 24 pack of water on sale for $1.99 and a 1.75 liter (yep, not 2 liters) Coke Zero to drink during the trip. I used my Walgreens rewards to get money off.

Restaurant coupons were also limited. We did get one for a Marriott we stayed at that gave us a discount at a local restaurant and a 2 for 1 drink coupon at the hotel bar.

A little trick to get a better hotel deal worked. I called the hotel directly and asked them if they had any specials. They did. The price was much lower and they discounted parking plus some other deals. It was for a Marriott hotel.

Spiny Lobster

A lot of times we would get just one meal because were large enough and since we didn’t want to take leftovers with us. One of the best deals was a lunch at Jibaros. It was a broiled grouper that came with side of amarillos (sweet plantains) for $10.95. It was so good we came back again for the same meal.

Another place had a burger and steak specials on Sunday along with drink specials. So you had dig around some for the restaurant deals.

Before we left I had some Puerto Ricans I know tell me to be careful. However, we had no issues at all. I didn’t see any riff raff. I did check out this site to see where not to stay as it shows crime rates in all of Puerto Rico: https://crimegrade.org/violent-crime-puerto-rico/

Most everyone spoke English. If they didn’t, we managed to “speak”. All the street signs were in Spanish.

I had to check with my smartphone provider to see if there were any extra charges while making calls or texting in Puerto Rico. They told me the pricing on international calls. I told them that Puerto Rico was part of the U.S. That stumped them, but he said he learned something new not thinking that Puerto Rico was part of the U.S. They did say data usage was at no extra charge. Calls were 2 cents a minute. Texting was 5 cents. Peanuts. I then asked about pricing for the Virgin Islands, Guam and the Marshall Islands, all territories of the U.S. I think I blew his mind again.
