PRICE CHECK
The PD did a story about items ringing up correctly at area stores? Most were, but there were many that didn’t. It’s a good idea to watch the prices as they ring them up just to make sure they are priced correctly.

Independence Day Deals!

EUROPEAN VACATION
All United flights in the U.S. are grounded. That’s how our trip to Europe started. There was a software issue that caused United’s computer systems to go down on the morning we were flying to Sweden. They said something about their computer systems being down over the p.a. system at the airport, but initially I didn’t think anything of it as I thought it was just isolated to one of the gates. That was until I saw it on Yahoo on their headline Breaking News message. Noooo! After having our last flight cancelled I knew I had to go into scramble mode.

I got into line at United customer service and they said the systems were coming back up. She asked when our flight left. I said 11 am. They said that by the time our flight left we should be ok. I nervously accepted her answer.

The plane did board on time, but we waiting a long while while paperwork was done to get the flight ready. When’s the last time you heard paperwork had to be done before a flight! When we got to Newark we used United Club passes I got when I complained to United about rude service by a United Club I experienced the other month flying out of LA. Free wine, beer, newspapers, and food eased my nerves.

Chose Your Exact Flight & Time

I’ll write about the first part of our trip and blog about the rest later.

Our trip took us to Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, and Portugal. It was definitely a handful of counties I never expected to visit.

My flight was free as I had enough miles for an overseas flight. I opened a United credit card that got me 50,000 points and along with some old points I had I used 80,000 points for the flight. For my wife’s ticket I tracked pricing for many months to see how high and low it went. The problem with waiting too long to redeem miles is that you may not get the award miles flight you want.

Flying overseas can be expensive. It’s usually over $1,000. Back around 7 years ago I was able to get a ticket to London for $350. I haven’t seen that price since then. With the lower gas prices the airlines are helping increase their profits and buy needed airplane replacements, but eventually I expect some better pricing.

One little trick I learned was that you can use an extra leg, or stopover, on a round-trip flight. We flew into Stockholm, did a cruise, and then flew to Portugal for a visit before returning home. The Stockholm to Lisbon flight leg, being that there were 48 hours in-between the next flight, allowed me to get it for free.

Stockholm View 2

Our first stop took us to Sweden. We were staying in Sweden with the family of an exchange student we got to know.

We make a point to get to our destination before a cruise at least a couple days beforehand since flights aren’t guaranteed to get there in time. Plus with the jet lag it let us get our bearings together before we took our cruise.

The wild thing about going to Scandinavia was that the days are long. The sun didn’t go down until around 11:00 pm and it rose at 4:00 am. The first couple days I had jet lag so I was too tired to notice the sun so early.

To say “hello” in Swedish you say “Hej”. It sounds like “Hey”. I usually say “Hey” when I say hello as it was. Most of the time I say “Hey, hey, hey” like Rerun did on the show What’s Happening. Oddly enough, I heard many Swedish say “Hey, hey” when they said hello. I anxiously waited for another “Hey”, but it never came. Perhaps they were using a more efficient Rerun greeting.

One crazy thing that happened while we were on our trip was in Sweden. We were watching the changing of the guard at the Parliament when my wife said someone with an Applied logo on their jacket was behind us. Applied is where I work. I’m thinking there is no way someone from my work would be in Sweden at the same time I am. I never hear of anyone travelling to Sweden after all. Sure enough, I turn around and it’s someone that even works on the same floor as me. What a small world. They were there for a soccer tournament with their son.

Infart Sign

Her husband has my sense of humor. He took a picture of a sign that I did too. The sign says ‘INFART’. It means entrance. There is also an ‘UTFART’ for exit. I try to stay away from that area.

The conversion rate is great now with the strong U.S. dollar and weak foreign currency. The ruble (Russia), Euro (European Union Currency), Krona (Sweden), and most other currencies are at historically good exchange rates. The trouble in Russia and Greek crisis along with their depressed economies has made it a boon for U.S. travelers. The Euro was trading around .60 for every U.S. dollar when we were in Europe around 7 years ago. It’s around .90 now. In Sweden we got around 8.5 Kronor to the dollar. Back some years ago it went as low as 6 Kronor to the dollar. You can find exchange rates on http://www.xe.com
. So, if you are looking to travel overseas, now is the time.

Math is important when traveling overseas. Bring your abacus! Reason being, the conversion rates have to be computed before you buy something. For instance, I paid cash where it made sense, but sometimes it was better to pay by credit card. The rate to go to the airport in Sweden was 470 Krona. The conversion rate was around 8.5 Kronor to the dollar. I asked him how much in cash to pay him and he said $74. It should’ve been around $50. I used a credit card and it ended up being $55. So they know people don’t pay attention to conversion rates and take advantage of it. Bring a calculator to be on the safe side.

Since most countries like American dollars, they don’t always mind you paying using them. Lots of times I would buy an item that let’s say, cost 1 Euro. In essence, it was around $1.10, but I would ask them if one American dollar was ok and they almost always said yes.

McDonalds Cheeseburger

10 Krona equals how much in dollars? Well, it’s around 8.5 Krona per U.S. dollar, so around $1.10. That’s a Swedish McDonalds menu for you!

If you travel overseas, check your credit card to see if it charges for foreign transaction fees, the fee to convert currencies using your credit card. It’s usually a very small percent. Some cards don’t charge a fee though. Find out before you leave on your trip. Also make sure your card has a chip which keeps thieves from skimming them and more.

Stockholm View

Stockholm, Sweden has many historical old buildings. Beautiful architecture. Their old town was the best. Lots of cafes and bars. I was able to sniff out one of the best deals at one of them as a local later told me. It was at the Red Lion and I got a steak with mashed potatoes and a vegetable along with a pint of beer for around $10! Hot diggity Swedish meatball!

Nobel

The Nobel museum is in old town Stockholm. The city hall, of which we toured, is where they have the dinners for the recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize. The gal that was our tour guide was very scripted and liked to ask the guests questions which most were met with a cricket silence. So I asked her one. There were some bulbs in the city hall chandelier that were purple in color while the others were white. I asked her why some of them were purple. She didn’t know and she kept repeating it as if she was never stumped before. I thought I was going to see smoke come out her ears and start saying…does not compute…before she exploded. My guess is that they found a garage sale where they were selling purple light bulbs cheap. Purple is a calming color so maybe they wanted the politicians to be calm. Or maybe it is a kind of black light that will show gunpowder or something else on people.

USA Rocks

The gal we knew worked at the Parliament for Sweden. It’s like our Congress. We visited where she worked in the office. Across from them was one of the Parliamentarians office and he had a message board where you can write messages. Of course, I had to write a message. I wrote “USA Rocks” and below it “so does Sweden”. I probably could have written something more profound or funny, but I kept it simple.

Crusty

One of the politicians had a painting in the Parliament and something in it caught my eye. If you look close you will see an image of Crusty the Clown from the Simpsons painted in it. I like this guy’s moxie.

We visited the place where they vote. I pressed one of the buttons on the voting desk. I’m not sure, but perhaps I voted on some legislation.

ABBA bus

All aboard the ABBA bus!

We visited the ABBA museum. It was a dream come true for my wife. Actually, I have to admit that I am also a big fan. Matter of fact, I think they helped get us married. You see, when I first met my wife it was because we needed to each take someone to a wedding. Well, after the first one I asked her what music she liked. She said ABBA. I told her that she wouldn’t believe this, as I pushed the ABBA cassette tape into the radio.

ABBA

Hello Frieda, Agneta, Byorn, and Benny. How are you? Oh, you’re wax.

The museum had displays about each one of the singers and how they won the Eurovision contest in 1974 with their song Waterloo that catapulted them into stardom.

They had a place where you can sing and record a song. They also had a hologram of the group where you can be the fifth member and sing with them. One of the holograms followed me to the bathroom. Very uncomfortable.

You’d be surprised by the number of rock groups that came from Sweden. One of the biggest groups to come out of Sweden is Roxette (they sang songs that went #1 like ‘Joy Ride’ and ‘It Must Have Been Love’. They had more #1 songs than ABBA. However ABBA has sold more albums after the Beatles at over 380 million. Roxette was having a concert the month we were there.

Some of the other rock bands to come from Sweden include Ace of Base, Eagle Eye Cherry, Neneh, Tove Lo, and the Cardigans.

You’d think you’d notice a big accent to those groups with their songs, but pretty much everyone we talked to knew English so to sing in English isn’t a big thing. Most spoke English very well.

One bar we went to was a biker gang type of bar in Stockholm. The AC/DC concert in town that night brought in may burly, tattooed, long-haired bikers. The funny thing is that they had karaoke the night we were there. It was midnight and it hadn’t started and we had to go. I asked the waitress if my wife could sing ABBA there and she said yes. People sing all kinds of songs she said. That I would’ve liked to see, but we had to catch a flight in the morning so we had to book.

We chatted with a couple local guys there. Many people that we bumped into were very curious about Americans. They love America and emulate it a lot. I did find out that they didn’t like one American. Donald Trump. They heard about all his comments and said he was an embarrassment. We found throughout the trip how people knew all about America. They were intrigued by us. Going to different countries and seeing their culture was equally as intriguing.

We stayed at a hotel using Hotels.com. After ten booking you get a free stay. They post all the deals for hotels and rate them. You’ll find rate drops so it pays to check often on the site. Look for free breakfast hotels in Europe. They have the best breakfasts. Not just cereal and yogurt. They have a lot more and good stuff that isn’t cheap.

Ohio Store

Surprisingly, a store in Stockhom was named Ohio! It was a punky clothes type of store. It wasn’t open so I couldn’t ask anyone how it got its name.

Some things I learned about Sweden. It has over 100,000 lakes. They don’t like Norwegians and vice versa. The love to “fika”. It’s a word that means socializing coffee break. It’s a break they have to eat something like bread and cheese and have a strong coffee. We fika’d a lot.

TGIFridays was co-founded by a Swede. There are lots of the restaurants in Stockholm. I was surprised there were any until I found that out.

Swedish Smorgasbord

Our hosts fed us lots of great Swedish food. We had an authentic Swedish smorgasbord one night. They had a few varieties of herring, a fish that is typically pickled. I liked it even though it looked like it was going to taste like rubber. Lots of great seafood. They did say they sometimes serve what they call fermented fish. It smells they said and I was glad they took that off the menu.

During dinner they sang a typical Swedish song sung during gatherings. Very ethnic and it reminded me when I was younger and my relatives would start singing national songs after a few drinks.

Prices for food were ok. The exchange rate helped. One thing that was expensive were drinks. Most glasses of wine weren’t less than $10 and beer was pricey too.

Next week I’ll tell you about the rest of the trip, including Russia and also a visit to Portugal to visit our foreign exchange daughter!

Giant Eagle doubles coupons that are 99 cents or less. That means a .75 coupon will double to $1.50 off. It happens automatically when a coupon that is 99 cents or less is scanned at the register – 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

Get 10 cents in Fuelperks for every $50 spent ($3 savings).

An eOffer won’t work if you use a manfacturer coupon for the same item. In the past an eOffer would work along with a manufacturer coupon. An eOffer will supercede a paper coupon. Click here for dozens of eOffers (electronic coupons that link to you card and trigger when you purchase the item – only works once and doesn’t double): http://www.gianteagle.com/#

Giant Eagle posts what needs to be purchased in order to trigger a register coupon to print. Find the deals at: http://www.gianteagle.com/grocery-coupons/monthly
