BAD ROADS
I noticed that the sewer grates along the median on I-90 are clogged with vegetation. It’ll cause flooding on the road aside from looking ugly. The roads used to be much cleaner in the past, so with all the state cuts I’d imagine that taking care of the roads got nixed. Either way, we can still report any pothole or issue on the state roads. I reported it on the Ohio Department of Transportation site at http://www.dot.state.oh.us/damagereport/Pages/default.aspx . So if you see an issue with a road, place a report on the site! Let’s see how long it takes for them to fix it, if they even do. I also put one in for a pothole that seems to never fully get fixed near East 72nd. My body has been so accustomed to it that it tenses up just beforehand to get ready to get jarred running over it.
LOW WAGE INCREASES
Did you hear about the story of the business that upped their minimum pay to workers to $70,000? Well, it was great for the workers that were making the least amount in wages, but those that were already making close to that amount were dismayed because, in essence, the raises they got before that increase meant they were now getting paid no better than entry workers. Those workers are now leaving because they feel they should also be getting a big increase in pay to compensate for it.
It’s the same issue I blogged about when Wal-mart decided to increase their wages. What would happen to those whose pay was close to the pay that the lowest wages were increasing to? It’s great that the lowest paid workers are getting needed raises, but how is that fair to those that are getting paid almost the same amount, if not the same, but have been working there for 5 or 10 years or more? For instance, if a worker making $7 an hour got a 3% wage every year for ten years they would earn $9.39 in the tenth year. States are increasing the minimum wage to at least $10 an hour in many states and cities, so working there the ten years meant nothing. Companies know it’s a sticky wicket to compensate for those years when they are now trying to find ways to pay for the increase in pay.
It comes down to the lowest paid workers just haven’t been earning enough since the minimum wage hasn’t kept up with inflation. If the minimum wage kept up with inflation since 1968, it would be around $10.75 an hour in 2015.
So the real problem is that the lowest wages haven’t kept up with inflation and aren’t a livable wage. If it had kept up, then those earning the lowest wages wouldn’t now see their wages so close to the new minimum wage.
It’s kind of the same thing when people quit jobs because they are getting offered 10%, 20%, 30% or more at another company. The market sometimes moves past what some companies pay. Sometimes when a company offers to match the salary it doesn’t wash away the resentment of knowing that they were underpaid. The ripple effect it is having on wages, especially with Baby Boomers retiring, will amplify as the years go on. The better workers will leave for better deserved pay, if it makes sense. The quit rate, the rate where people quit their jobs voluntarily, has been increasing steadily. It’s another sign of an improving job market and a realignment in worker pay.
With the school year starting I’m sure there will be tons more ‘now hiring’ signs at low wage companies like fast food and retail. Students will go back to school and work less hours, if at all. Companies have felt the pressure to keep costs down and now it may not be so easy to do so with more competition for low-pay workers. Stay tuned as it very well may affect your shopping experience!
EUROPEAN VACATION PART2
After our stay in Sweden we took a Royal Caribbean cruise to other cities. It took us to Finland, Russia, Estonia and Latvia. Plus we had one day at sea. I prefer to avoid cruises that have lots of days at sea because I want to be sight-seeing rather than being on the ship.
We are now at the Platinum level with Royal Caribbean. What that means is that you earn points for each cruise and after a certain amount of points you get to a new level that gets you discounts, special events, and other niceties. The more you cruise with the same cruiseline the better off you are because you will get to higher levels more quickly. If you get enough points, they let you beep the horn on the ship.
This cruise was different than the other cruises we were on. No karaoke, lobster night, midnight buffet, or late night, made-to-order restaurants. Some of that is probably good because it kept me from eating too much.
For the cruise we used credits we got for booking the cruise through Vacationstogo.com and also through a Royal Caribbean credit card. We each got $150 credit. Get this; in the end they owed us! They paid us around $7 in cash.
I got a massage special at the spa on the ship on the first night. The deal was a 75 minute massage for a 50 minute price and good only if booked the first day of the cruise. I needed it. I had knots all over. Flying overseas and stressing out about travel will do that to you. I wasn’t even sure that George Jefferson could’ve gotten the knots out of my back. Some of you youngins won’t understand the reference unless maybe you watch the Jeffersons on TVLand.
I like to enter the raffles. We won one on the cruise. I got a free six pack of Bingo cards. Didn’t win though. The prize was $300 and the six pack of cards cost $45. Way too expensive for the prize. Someone even got their money back once they found out it was only one game with a small prize.
We usually get a wine bottle plan special, but the cost averaged out to $37 a bottle and most of the wines on the list were $36 bottles. There was a bottle that cost $59, but that was the only good one on the list that we could choose from. Instead, we brought in wine to the ship. We were allowed to bring two bottles of wine. Plus we bought some on the trip that they confiscated, but then they give you back what you purchased on the last day of the cruise. I asked our room attendant if we could get them sooner and he did get it to us before dinner!
Something new they did on this cruise was to offer a carafe of wine for $15 for a liter or half a liter for $10. Not the good stuff, but it will do.
On the cruise ship they had almost 900 workers from dozens of different countries. They spend 6 months on the ship before they get a break.
Our waitress was from St. Lucia. If you have a weak stomach, stop reading the rest of this paragraph. So we got to talking and one of our tablemates said they had a cold. Our waitress said that mothers in her country would suck out the snot from their kid’s nose when they would have a cold. Now that is love…and gross. My wife got a cold on the trip so I mentioned it to the waitress if she could help her out. She laughed and politely said no. It’s like mom is a Neti-pot.
Our next stop was Finland. Beautiful town. Lots of nice shops. Many are high end.
We met up with an exchange student that lived next door to us. She almost became our first student, but someone took her while we were deciding. Ended up she had to move to a new family and our neighbor took her!
Her mom accompanied us and we toured the town seeing an old church they went to and where she was going to school. There wasn’t enough time to do everything. Some of the stops by the cruise only allow you 5 or 6 hours to visit the country. Way not enough.
Most Coke or Pepsi was sold in 1 liter bottles. The price for the one liter was $2.49 or about $3 in U.S. dollars. Too expensive.
When we got to downtown Helsinki we stopped at an open air market. The one place was selling all kinds of seafood. We tried what looked like fried minnows. I felt like I was on Fear Factor. If you fry anything it will taste good. It was ok.
They had nets above the market to keep the seagulls out, but that didn’t stop all of them from making their way in.
I saw this place in Helsinki. To the left Karaoke. To the right a restroom. One whole business? Why an outside sign for a restroom? That will remain a mystery for the rest of my life.
Here you can see the meal combo price for a McDonalds burger. Pretty much the same price as in the U.S.
We had a little scare while we were in Finland. We had to be back on the boat by 5:30. That is the time the ship left. We planned to get on a bus at 4:30 which should give us enough time to get there with time to spare. We get to the station and we can’t find our gate. After asking some people that didn’t know where it was either we found someone that did and they said we had to go outside for it. We did, but we missed the one that was supposed to be there at 4:30. So we wait for the next one. It was running late. Now I’m starting to freak out. I was about to have kittens. It was about 4:50 and even if we get on the bus I’m thinking it will take time just to have people get off the bus and on, so we are chancing it. I see a taxi cab across the street and I was seconds away from making an executive decision to take it. Then the bus finally shows up. I feel relieved, but I’m not sure how long it will take to get back.
The bus gets to our dock and it’s maybe 5:15 and I’m hurrying our goodbye. I felt bad, but I wasn’t about to get stuck. I look over and see that there is a long line to get on the ship, so we had time. Whew!
I’ve seen cruise ships leave a dock without people. One time when we were in Vancouver, Canada our ship started to pull out of the dock. Someone comes running down the dock yelling for the boat to stop. Sorry Charlie. The cruise ship doesn’t change course. They had to fly to the next port on their dime. Even worse was that the first day was a day at sea so they missed another full day on the ship.
In honor of Putin I wore the shirt above.
We booked the trip more than a half year ago and things were dicey in Russia. Putin kept saying and doing some crazy things. We figured that the cruise might go to a different country if things got that bad.
The odd thing to me was the history Russia and others had with America in past wars. Take a guess if Russia was an ally of ours or not in WW2. How about Italy? Russia was our ally during WW2. Italy was not. Surprise. Surprise. You wouldn’t know it the way things are now.
I asked an Estonian what they thought of Putin. He didn’t say much. I found out why. He was half Russian. The Russians took over the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, & Lithuania) during WW2. There were rumblings they wanted to do so again. He felt NATO moving in troops and armaments was like putting a target on his country. Maybe, but they were already a target and now it is protected or at least armed so that Putin doesn’t try any funny business like he’s done in the Ukraine.
The one thing that stands out when you visit Russia and other Soviet empire nations, former or not, was the large number of apartment buildings and the limited amount of houses. Very sterile looking. Depressing almost. It’s all people can afford though.
I also asked our tour guide in St Petersburg what she thought of Putin. She said he was good for the country. Maybe she didn’t want to say anything bad about the current regime because they’ve been known to target people that do so. She was vocally displeased with how little religion is practiced in Russia. She also did say how bad past regimes were, killing millions of people.
Someone we knew used an excursion company called Red October and they said it was great and they got a decent deal. Red October kept saying how you have to wait in line with the cruiseline excursions. Their pricing was high though so we decided to go with a 2 day excursion offered by the cruiseline. It turned out that we were first in line to some of the tours and we really didn’t have to wait much if at all wherever we went. There were long lines after we left and some groups probably did wait an hour or two.
One of the folks on our cruise said they did find a great deal for excursion through Denrus http://www.denrus.ru/ . They said they were great and after checking their prices they would’ve been cheaper. I am leery about trying a business out unless I know someone that has used them.
We had to use an excursion company too in Russia as they manage your Visa to get into the country.
You have to be careful with booking excursions with companies outside of the cruiseline. One reason is that the cruiseline guarantees it will wait for you in case you are late getting back to the ship. Some may not be all cracked up to what they say they will do too. Ours were great, especially our guide. Very informative. They have to take tests every year in order to be a guide. She knew her history.
When we were in line to see St Peter & Paul Cathedral church (above) in St Petersburg a girl around 10 or so came up to our guide and asked if she spoke English. She was with a younger girl and an older guy with an accent, so I wasn’t sure if she was part of another group or what. When people approach you it’s best to be wary as we were warned many times about pickpockets. She said she needed something to eat because her blood sugar was low. She was speaking a little slurred and her eyes were red, so she seemed legit. Luckily, I had some Nature Valley bars and I gave her one. She walked away eating the bar. Then a guy in our group says his alcohol level was low.
We were warned about pickpockets in every city we visited. It’s a big problem in any of the tourist cities. The workers on the Eiffel Tower recently went on strike because there were so many problems with pickpockets. Paris was once city where we saw so much theft when we were there some years ago, so it doesn’t surprise me. Why the police don’t have surveillance on the area and arrest more pickpockets I don’t know.
I’ll have the, ummm, uhhh, that one.
The most beautiful church was the Spilled Blood church. During WW2 it was bombed. But get this, they found 11 shells that went through its domes, but none exploded. They found the shells many years after they landed in the church.
Religon in much of Scandanavia and Russia is limited. Many centuries ago Sweden didn’t allow independent churches in its country. Instead it had state run churches. That way they had the power, money, and influence over it’s population and not the church. In recent decades there is more freedom of religion in Sweden. Still limited as many don’t practice religion in Scandanavia.
In Russia, after Lenin dictated that all churches be destroyed it still has very limited appeal to its population. Much of the population was killed for being part of a religion. Nowadays, only 3% of Russians go to church. After the edict to destroy remaining churches there were some that were spared. They became farmers markets, museums and other entities. They were spared and these opulent churches remain popular tourist destinations.
When we were in the Peterhoff, a royal palace, our guide pointed at a picture of one of the royal family members and asked us who it was. I said Mike the Great. For some reason Mike the Great sounded funnier and more correct than Bob the Great so I went with it. I was incorrect.
We went to so many museums and churches in St Petersburg and many other of our destinations. It was like one big school field trip.
The Hermitage was now a huge museum of artwork, but it once served as the royal palace. Our guide told us the room above we were in was Catherine the Great’s bedroom. I farted in it. Take that royalty!
We took a river cruise on the many canals of St Petersburg. They had caviar, h’orduerves and shots of vodka for us. A Russian folk band cranked out the tunes. As you can see the accordian player was quite into his instrument.
The guide on the excursion spoke horrible English. It hurt my ears. It was like listening to a static radio station where you can only pick up a word or two here or there.
Our next stop was Estonia. It ended up being one of our favorite stops. Tallinn, it’s capital, has a quaint Medieval cobblestone village in the middle of town. Lots of neat shops, bars, and restaurants.
In Estonia I found a deal for chocolate that said 2 = 3. At first I thought it was 2 for $3, but that wasn’t it. It was buy 2 get the third free.
A popular item they sold in town was a juniper wooden pot trivet. When you put a warm pot on it a scent of juniper is released. When I was sleeping it was exposed in my luggage nearby. I smelt it all night.
In Latvia I couldn’t find a Christmas ornament with Latvia or Riga on it. We always get an ornament of every country we travel to. I found something close enough that we bought. It was an air freshener with Latvia written on it in the shape of the country. Good enough as it had a string attached to it.
Battle Royale of the Latvian Folk singers.
A famous icon in Latvia is the cat above. It’s used on a lot of tourist merchandise. Apparently the reason for the cat on top of the building was that it’s rear was pointed towards a family that didn’t allow the owner from joining a powerful Guild. So he put them up to spite them.
Latvia has a beautiful park in town. Another great old cobblestone center of town. Some modern parts to it too unlike most cities in that region.
Next week I’ll tell you about our last leg of the trip which was to Portugal to visit Rita, our exchange student and her family. I’ll also write about the biggest differences I noticed and also a surprise!

Each week get a deal through their new eAdvantage program. Register at http://www.gianteagle.com/Save/eadvantage-club/
Giant Eagle doubles coupons that are 99 cents or less. That means a .75 coupon will double to $1.50 off. It happens automatically when a coupon that is 99 cents or less is scanned at the register – 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
Get 10 cents in Fuelperks for every $50 spent ($3 savings).
An eOffer won’t work if you use a manfacturer coupon for the same item. In the past an eOffer would work along with a manufacturer coupon. An eOffer will supercede a paper coupon. Click here for dozens of eOffers (electronic coupons that link to you card and trigger when you purchase the item – only works once and doesn’t double): http://www.gianteagle.com/#
Giant Eagle posts what needs to be purchased in order to trigger a register coupon to print. Find the deals at: http://www.gianteagle.com/grocery-coupons/monthly

OPENING
Zumiez skateshop – Southpark mall
Alley Cat Oyster Bar – East bank of the Flats
Moe’s Southwest Grill – Rocky River
CLOSING
Staples – Parma on Brookpark Rd
Grovewood Tavern – Cleveland – this one hurts as it was a great place with unique food – they changed some through the years. When we first went there they had bands. It’s where we first came across one of our favorite bands, Stone River Band. They got away from having bands. Prices crept up. People had more options in the area and elsewhere. The neighborhood isn’t the best as they had to have security there. Didn’t stop us from coming though. Lots of the regular employees left and that was a red flag. Hopefully they will be re-incarnated elsewhere if not the same place.
