JUST ASK
Have you ever found out that after the coupon you planned to use was expired so you decided not to get the deal? Many of us have. However, have any of you still pursued the deal even though the coupon was expired or if the rules of the coupon weren’t what you expected or within the parameters of it? It happened to me recently.

I was at Staples and I had a coupon for $30 off a $60 order. Awesome coupon and with the school deals I wanted to be sure I used it. As I was in line I noticed the coupon said online only. Snap. Sure enough, the cashier tried to ring it up and it wouldn’t work and she said she couldn’t use it because it was online only. I asked her if she could still take it. She checked. A manager came over and allowed it to be used! He entered it in and viola I saved $30! The best thing is that I didn’t have to get rid of stuff because I now didn’t need $60 worth of items.

It also happened at Giant Eagle. I got $100 worth of gift cards this past week for the buy $100 in gift cards get $10 off your next shopping trip deal. I noticed that the $10 coupon didn’t print off and nothing came off the receipt so I looked at the ad again. It said $100 worth of Giant Eagle gift cards…the way I read it was $100 worth of gift cards that they sell and not specifically Giant Eagle gift cards. So I called up their customer service number and told them the story. She said she would send me a $10 gift card for Giant Eagle. Sure enough I got it a few days later.

I was also at OfficeMax and a coupon wouldn’t go through. It was for $10 off a $30 purchase. It was good at OfficeMax, but at a different one. He took it anyway. The problem is my eyes are getting worse now as I age and reading all that small print is like reading the bottom line of an eye chart through milky Saran Wrap. I have readers now to help me. I can’t even easily read menus in dark restaurants anymore. That’s what happens when you have to read all that small print on coupons for most of your life.

So it pays to ask. If you are a follow the rules type of person, then this will be hard to do. In essence, stores know mistakes will be made and that sometimes to keep you as a customer they will bend the rules. They know coupons can be a pain. Sometimes they can’t even figure out why some coupons don’t work. Managers have authorization to make these type of calls and they usually will side with the customer, especially if you are nice about it and not demand for it to be done.

NEXT PERSON IN LINE
I was at Sav-a-Lot recently and there was only one line open. The line got long and one lady parked herself in an aisle and proclaimed she was behind a guy wearing red. I thought it was odd that she just didn’t get behind him in line.

After a few minutes a manager comes up and says the next person in line go over to aisle 3. I headed towards him as I was next in line. As I look up he walked down aisle 1 so I went to move over to aisle 3. The lady that had said she was behind the guy in red already made a beeline to be next in line even though she was at the end of the line. She bumped into a display as she plowed to get ahead of everyone else. “Wow!”, I said out loud. The lady that was behind me just smiled with a ‘did she really do that look’ as did I. I was flabbergasted that someone could be so rude.

I should have said that I thought he said the next person in line and not the rudest person in line. She was an older lady that maybe had some issues, so I let it be. Maybe she didn’t and she was just a rude, selfish, boorish person. We’ve all seen these type of shoppers from time to time. I took a picture of her with my mind camera so that if I do see here again to make a mental note to keep an eye on her and maybe ‘interact’ with her in the store to see what she is all about.

I’ll ask her if she needs some butter because she looks like she could use some butter and then put some in her cart. If she throws it at me, I’ll just tell her that maybe margarine works better for her and place the margarine in her cart. Then when she isn’t looking I’ll wonk up one of the wheels on her cart so that it doesn’t turn. Ok, I better not. She’ll then be telling stories about me.

Lisbon

EUROPEAN VACATION PART 3
Next up was our visit to Portugal after our visit to Sweden, Finland, Russia, Estonia, and Latvia. I was excited to visit Portugal, as much as a furniture salesman seeing the first customer of the day after being open for hours. We wanted to see our exchange daughter in Portugal and meet her family. You really connect with your exchange kid. It’s like they’re your real kid. So it was good to see her. The weather was a bit chilly on the first part of the trip so we were looking forward to warming up a bit.

When it comes to hot and cold in Europe and elsewhere overseas you will have to be physically prepared. Most homes don’t have air conditioning. Not many fans either. Many windows don’t have screens so you are limited on being able to open the window without letting bugs in. Parts of Europe that normally don’t were seeing temperatures over 100 degrees this summer. Mix that in with some countries that don’t shower as frequently as those in the U.S. and you get quite the aromatic stew.

Sun Fish

We visited many places in Portugal, including the aquarium, museums, churches, and historical sites. We saw Torre de Belem (built in the 1500’s) and Paredão dos Descobrimentos (sculpture show below to the left of the bridge) on our first day there.

We stayed in Lisbon the first part of our stay and then to the family’s weekend house about 45 minutes north of Lisbon in Foz do Arelho.

Lisbon Bridge

Lisbon looks like an old San Francisco. Even one of the main bridges looks like the Golden Gate bridge as it was built by the same architect. There is also a statue that looks like the Jesus statue in Rio De Janiero. It’s called Christo Rei and overlooks the city (to the right of the bridge).

Lisbon Square

Back in the 1700s a major earthquake (7.9 on the Richter scale) hit Lisbon. It created a tsunami that obliterated a section of town. They rebuilt the area. The Square above was part of the town that was hit by a tsunami and was rebuilt.

Jeronimos Monastery

The above is Jeronimos Monastery. There are many religious aspects to Portugal. One also being the city of Fatima. It’s about an hour and a half north of Lisbon. It’s where three children saw the Virgin Mary. We didn’t get a chance to go there. I’ve been to Medjugorje in Bosnia in which children also saw the Virgin Mary. On our flights in and out of Lisbon there were lots of priests that were there to visit Fatima so we knew we were going to be safe.

Jeronimos Monastery 2

Jeronimos Monastery is over 500 years old.

Odibos
Odibos 2

The one place we really liked in Portugal was Odibos, a mini-Dubrovnik with its walled city. No water nearby unlike Dubrovnik, but very quaint with cobblestone streets, churches, and flowers bursting with color on centuries old buildings.

Sintra

Palácio da Pena in Sintra is a beautiful castle that housed many of the royal family from Portugal. It sits atop a hill overlooking the city.

Roman

As a builder was excavating a spot for a new building they found old Roman and Moor building remains. It was across the street from where Rita’s aunt lived. Her aunt lived in a building that was hundreds of years old.

Design

Prices were good in Portugal. A bottle of wine could be had for a buck or two. Lots for around $3 or $4. They have many high end wines that are sold at a great value. I got a port wine that was rate 92 by Wine Enthusiast for around $9. Portugal is known for its Port wine, but they are now making more regular wine. It’s a great value as they have some high quality wines at low prices.

Burger King Portugal

The prices at Burger King were about the same as they are in the U.S. I didn’t eat any Burger King or McDonalds on the trip, but from what I was told those restaurant’s food tasted better in the U.S.

Nazarre

North of Lisbon is a spot where a surfer, Garret McNamara surfed a world-record wave that was measured at around 100 feet. It’s in the city of Navarre. The picture above is the spot where it was done. It’s calm now, but there is a canyon channel where the waves are forced to go through that causes the high waves. What is amazing is that there are these huge rocks in front of the area they he surfed. Very dangerous as he had to steer away from them. Hard enough with a 100 foot wave above you.

In Navare a miraculous intervention in 1182 by the Virgin Mary, which saved the life of the 12th-century Portuguese knight Dom Fuas Roupinho while he was hunting one morning in a dense fog. He saw the apparition of the Virgin Mary which made him stop from chasing the deer over a cliff.

Room for Rent

An interesting custom in Navare is where people that have rooms to rent sit outside their homes with signs to get people to rent their rooms. It reminded me of the stores in the U.S. that have people in costumes with a sign trying to drum up business.

The ocean is very cold. The current comes from the north so the water is arctic cold. It literally numbs your legs.

We stopped in a city called Caldas da Rainha which is known for its pottery. We also found out it was known for its bakery and other items that are well, very sexual in nature to say the least. Anyway, we stopped at a pottery store called Bordalo Pinheiro. I found their clearance and discounted section upstairs. What I am most happy about is that none of it broke that we took home!

Modern House

Rita’s family has a summer house where we stayed for part of the visit. A very modern cool-looking house. It had to be a one-story house so they created an alternating “first floor”. It was approved and won an award for its unique architecture. Rita is going to college to be an architect, so she has an inspiration in her summer/weekend house.

Rita Driving

Rita was learning to drive. The picture is of her driving us around town. What you don’t see is the faces of the people that are in the car. Kidding aside, she did drive well considering she had to drive a stick shift which most everyone drives in Europe. We did take her driving when she was in the U.S. when she was here. No trees or garage corners were harmed.

Apple Flowers 2

One delicious pastry item that Rita’s mom made were apple roses. They look like roses, but are made with apples, cherry jam, and dough. We ate lots of Portuguese food. Much of it was seafood like cod. Delicious.

Pruscioto Ruffles

One of the items that was very tasty was prosciutto flavored Ruffles! Now that is European.

Roasted Octopus

We went to a restaurant for our last meal there. I wanted to order calamari, but they were sold out. So instead I ordered the roasted octopus. It was a hunk of octopus that didn’t look all tha appetizing but tasted absolutely delicious. I’m not one to be afraid to eat exotic food. I like to eat what is local and with Lisbon being an ocean-side city known for seafood I wanted to try something I don’t always find in the U.S.

1 Euro

I got a shirt for one Euro (a little over $1)! It was at a large supercenter store. As you can see all the shirts in one clearance section were priced 1 Euro.

Womens Secret

This store sounds so similar to another store. It’s at the tip of my tongue.

There are many unique things specific to Europe. Elevators for one. They are very small. You’re lucky to be able to fit three q-tips into one.

You know how oriental rug stores always seem to close and then re-open here in the U.S. They always seem to have looong going out of business sales. Well, I saw an oriental rug store going out of business in Stockholm and the people that we were with commented how they always close and re-open. Apparently, it’s not just here.

Beds are very stiff in Europe. A former exchange student said that was one of the things he missed the most in the U.S. No pillowtops. Be happy that we have places like the Original Mattress Factory around.

Bread is popular. I mean real popular. You’ll see it served with pretty much every meal, if not be the meal itself. I ate it so much that in pretty every dream there was a slice of bread in it. Some of the bread was unique and delicious like the black walnut bread and the cardamom sweet bread we tried in Sweden.

Gas is very expensive. It was usually around $1.35 per liter or around $5 or $6 per gallon.

Coffee Estonia

Coffee is huge too. Europeans drink it like it’s necessary for survival. It’s very strong, but not a bitter strong like Starbucks.

If you watch a European eat food you’ll notice that they hold their knife in their right hand and fork in the left. They don’t put the knife down either after cutting their food.

Cats were scarce. We didn’t see a single one in St Petersburg. I think I saw only a couple squirrels too the whole trip. I didn’t see a giraffe or rhinoceros for that matter either.

English is spoken by just about everyone overseas. Germany used to be the #2 language across Europe, but that changed after WW2. There are some words in English that are bad words in other languages and vice versa. We found out one particular word that is a city in the U.S. is a very bad word in Portuguese. Start saying all the cities in the U.S. to a Portuguese person and when their eyes get real big you will know which one it is.

One of the things about youth in Europe is that teenagers even around the age of 14 go out until 7 am. That includes going to night clubs. It’s normal there. They don’t leave until around midnight to go out. They usually take public transportation home. They can drink at that young age too. All that wouldn’t fly in the U.S. Even those in the U.S. military can’t drink until they are 21. So yes, cultures elsewhere can be very different.

Lisbon 2

Our favorite places we visited were Stockholm, Sweden, Tallinn, Estonia, and Odibos, Portugal. They all had neat cobblestone towns filled with quaint restaurants and coffee shops.

All the countries were very clean, Sweden especially. They have street cleaner trucks that clean every day. It’s something Cleveland could use. The freeways here need a good scrubbing too. It’s like a garage sale of stuff on the side of the road.

One problem every city except St Petersburg had was gypsy beggars. They were on many corners. They weren’t pushy. They sat all day outside of stores begging.

Another issue is immigrants. There are so many from war-torn countries that it has become an issue. It has created economic and housing issues. Desperate immigrants aren’t being welcome and you can see the backlash in the countries where they seek asylum.

boat 2

On our way home we had issues at Newark airport. Avoid Newark airport if you can. What a cluster. So we go to the line to check in with TSA and we had to go up an escalator. The lady tells us to go back down the escalator so we do. Then we see another lady that says go up the escalator. Then another lady says go into a line that is right next to where the first lady was standing. That is their procedure. Since they don’t have space for lines they send everyone on a wild goose line chase.

A lady there needed to get through because her flight was boarding. The TSA agent so no she couldn’t let her cut through line. Then when we get to a TSA agent she presses a sign to tell her which new line for the people to get into. Apparently just seeing which line is shorter doesn’t work. A button must be pressed that either says left or right. Then we meld into a couple lines to get our stuff x-rayed. No trays. Then they say go backwards to get into a new line to get people scanned. Wow.

All the TSA agents had attitudes. I can see why. People probably reem them all day because they spout off about how dumb their line system is. The airport needs more room and a management team that knows what they are doing. They also need smile police to tell them to learn how to smile and be nice.

Last Supper

As with any vacation we could’ve used another vacation at home to relax and get things back to normal. It was a great trip with many new experiences and meeting so many wonderful people. Europe has so much history, culture and grand buildings. It’s amazing to hear about how many wars and conquests were in each country. Some I didn’t know about including when Sweden fought Russia. You only know about some countries from what you see on TV and that doesn’t always give a real sense of the country. Just like a human being, once you get to understanding them you find out more about them than what you see than what’s on the outside.

Daisy Home Depot

Now for the surprise! We have a new foreign exchange student staying with us this school year! She’s Daisy from Austria. She’s in the marching band and cross country team. She’s a great saxophone player and plays in her town’s symphony. Thankfully she gets my sense of humor. We’re looking forward to a great year with her.

Giant Eagle doubles coupons that are 99 cents or less. That means a .75 coupon will double to $1.50 off. It happens automatically when a coupon that is 99 cents or less is scanned at the register – 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

Get 10 cents in Fuelperks for every $50 spent ($3 savings).

An eOffer won’t work if you use a manfacturer coupon for the same item. In the past an eOffer would work along with a manufacturer coupon. An eOffer will supercede a paper coupon. Click here for dozens of eOffers (electronic coupons that link to you card and trigger when you purchase the item – only works once and doesn’t double): http://www.gianteagle.com/#

Giant Eagle posts what needs to be purchased in order to trigger a register coupon to print. Find the deals at: http://www.gianteagle.com/grocery-coupons/monthly
