AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Ben Franklin is credited with the saying and it holds true to this day. Insurance is a good example of how you may not use it for decades, but when you do, you’re glad you have it. One community in Florida took that comment to heart and survived hurricane Ian, unlike many of the communites around it. Check out this story that spelled out how they took measures that saved them from catastrophe: https://robertglazer.com/friday-forward/preventing-hurricane-damage/
CHICKEN WING PRICE DROP
The wholesale per pound price of wings have dropped to pre-pandemic prices. They were $3.25 per pound in May 2021 and are now around $1.68 per pound. Look for wing specials again! Even stock prices for chicken wing restaurants have jumped due to the price drop. Wing Stop’s stock has doubled in the past few months.
COUPON CHANGES
Global Savings Group (GSG), a European company, has purchased the Coupons.com brand and domain from Quotient Technology. It’s good news since word was Quotient was looking to mothball the Coupons.com website. GSG already owns and operates several coupons and cash-back sites in Europe and Asia, so they will now have more of a global presence.
Also, Smart Source didn’t have their coupon inserts in the newspapers the past two weeks. Normally, they usually don’t have them during the holidays, so a bit of a concern that they pulled back having them in the month of October. It’s hard enough finding coupons, so let’s hope they ramp things up and get some big inserts in the papers.
CALI WINERY TRIP
It’s been a good while since we last did a California wine trip. Things changed since the last time we hit the wineries there. Reservations were needed for most. No just stopping at each winery. Tasting prices were ridiculously high. Plus the cost of a bottle of wine jumped too. There were ways around it all.
We had some options on where we wanted to go for our next vacation. The trigger to go on this trip was the minimal amount of miles needed to book the flight. Only 6,500 miles each way. We booked the flight, however the times and locations of the flights changed multiple times after booking the flight. What a wild ride it was to get to our destination. Lots of zigs and zags.
We got an e-mail a month before our flights that our flight times changed. Good thing because it allowed me to pick better flight times as most airlines allow you to change your flight should they change their times by more than 60 minutes. I chose an earlier flight so that, should our flight get cancelled or changed, we had some options. With all the cancellations and changes on American Airlines I wanted some safer options.
We got to the airport only to find out our plane had maintenance issues and was delayed with a good chance of being cancelled. Start the circus of events.
With our plane out of commission we had to book a different flight. We got there at 7:00 am for our original flight and the new flight left at 5:30 pm. The lady rebooking us needed help from her co-workers to figure out what she was doing. Yeah, thanks. Please pour more anxiety on me. As if I’m not amped up enough about the cancelation and all. One problem. No flights to San Jose and she says we might have to book a flight the next day. Noooo! Not the dreaded next day flight comment. There were flights to San Francisco we could take that would get us there that day. Bonus problem. Our car rental is out of San Jose. No problem. I rebook it out of San Fran while she worked on our tickets. The price didn’t change much thankfully on the car rental. We also had to rebook our flight back and it ended up better too not being an overnight flight.
She rebooks us, but I knew there was something more should could do but she didn’t know how to do it. So afterwards I went to a different agent. I get back in line and make a beeline for the lady that knew what she was doing.
She said we could fly standby on a 1:50 pm flight and if we make that one we can catch at 5:00 pm flight out of Dallas. Everything had to work perfectly to make it happen. I ask how often standbys get on flights and she says usually 2 to 6 get on flights. We were initially the first and second on standby but other Priority members and transfers bumped us to 4th and 5th. Start the prayers! We wait at the gate anxiously. They call the #3 person, Mr Fischer. Call him again. No appearance. Yes! Now we are next, but we need both of us to get on the flight. We go up to the desk after they struggle to pronounce our name. I ask if they have two seats and she says yes! Whew! No other standbys got on after us.
We fly to Dallas and have to go to a different terminal which is a pain knowing we have only about a half our to get on our second standby plane. We get to the gate and see our names already assigned seats. We made the flight!
With all the reservations we had booked at wineries the next day we we may have had to pay for them if we had to cancel. Thank God for making everything work out in the end.
Our car rental was with National. We belong to the Emerald Aisle so we get to choose any car there at the intermediate car price. I was asking the guy about which cars had the best gas mileage. They had a hybrid that did over 50 mpg. With the high price of gas in California I wanted to make sure I got a car that lightly sipped gas.
As I’m asking him about all the cars he says I can also pick one from the aisle over. Cool. So I start looking at them. Then I go over to the other side and see a couple Mustang convertibles. I express my interest in them even though it wasn’t one I could pick. He then says he would ok me getting the convertible. Hot bananas. Off in a Ford Mustang convertible we go. Luggage room was tight, but who cares.
Gas was mostly in the mid to upper $5 range. There were some stations under $5 and some over $6. I was able to use 33 cents off at Shell for rewards I earned with them. I checked https://www.gasbuddy.com to find the best gas prices in the area.
Wine tasting were very expensive. The last time we were in Napa they were usually around $5 or $10, if not free. Now they cost $25 to $100. It’s almost better to just buy a bottle of wine! Sometimes they refund the money if you buy a bottle or more. They usually took an hour for the tastings. Many we booked were with the winemaker. We did find some passes that got us free tastings or two-for-ones.
The Napa passport and Sonoma passport offers mostly 2 for 1 tasting deals and some discounts on wine along with some freebie tastings. A Priority Wine Pass covers multiple states and regions and costs $46. The Sonoma and Napa passport costs $29 each. We got the Sonoma and Priority Pass via Groupon. Groupon puts out 10% to 25% off codes to get them even cheaper. The passports saved us around $1,000!
I found wine tasting freebies and 2 for 1s on the mags and brochures we found at hotels. Some saved us $100 just for one tasting!
We prefer big reds and oaky buttery chardonnays aside from other flavors. The best wineries we found were Abobe Road Winery – Petaluma (all the reds were amazing! Blown away how good they were.), St Amant – Lodi (great Petite Syrahs and Ports and great prices), Stephen Kent Winery – Livermore (great reds), Dry Creek – Healdsburg (great reds), Avinodos Winery in Napa (great Sauv Blanc and reds), and Conn Creek – Napa (great reds – too pricey).
Some beautiful wineries with great views or courtyards with great wines, included Rancho Victoria Vineyards in Plymouth, Harney Lane Winery in Lodi, and Ferraro-Carrano in Healdsburg.
One thing to be aware of when booking winery trips is that some wineries are only open on weekends. Also be aware that some charge if you don’t show up for your reservation.
One trick to get good deals on wine is to check local stores for deals. Some wineries we went to sold nationally and you can find them at area stores on sale on a regular basis. We tended to just get wine that isn’t sold but at the winery. Some only sold them at the grocery stores in California, aside from the winery. Some brands have rebates which will lower the cost even more. The rebates are tags that are put on bottles. We even found a bottle of Sezerac Rye bourbon which is hard to find and on sale for $23 at $17 off!
At the Q Restaurant in Napa we found half off drinks during happy hour. I found a hidden deal that I haven’t seen anywhere else. They also sold bottles of booze for their happy hour price! In essence, at cost. They had a Grgich Hills Zinfandel for $23.50! They had Blanton’s bourbon which is hard to find, but she didn’t have enough to sell me any. If she did she said it would be $40 when they sell for four to six times that amount.
One way to save on wine is to sign up for a winery’s wine club. They send a select certain amount of bottles two to four times a year at a discount. Being part of the club also means you get free tastings, discounts on additional wine, and other perks. This trip we didn’t join any wine clubs. Instead, we signed up to get e-mails from the winery so that they can send us deals should they have any. Usually around Black Friday they offer discounts on wine. Sometimes it’s only for wine club members, but not always.
We had some cases shipped from the winery itself. Some allowed us to include bottles we got from other wineries. It was as cheap as $40 to ship back to Ohio. Not all wineries had permits to ship to Ohio and some charged as much as $79 to ship a case.
Here’s another tip. We bought wine luggage at one of the wineries! Yep, they make a luggage that fits a cushioned box for a dozen bottles of wine. We got a deal on it by asking the winery to waive the tasting fee of $50 when we bought them. We flew American airlines and they charged $40 to check it in as our second luggage. Best bet is to fly Southwest since they don’t charge to check in a second luggage.
I used a lot of Restaurant.com certificates during the trip. Found some great ones, including a French bakery in Healdsburg called Cousteaux. Another with great Thai food was Jojos in San Jose. If you’ve never used a Restaurant.com certificate you have to know ahead of time that you have to spend a certain amount to get the discount added. No biggee because we are usually over that amount anyway.
I brought fast food coupons with me that we get in the regular mail. They worked in California! Great for a quick bite to eat.
I bought the Entertainment book for the trip. There is no more paper book, so it is the app. It came in handy for restaurant deals, but also at wineries. Some wineries had up to 20% off the wine with the coupon. It’s also good not only for Cleveland, but also any city in the U.S., so no need to buy books for other states or cities.
We stayed at hotels I mostly booked out of Hotels.com. They sent me some codes for bonus reward days that made getting a free night quicker (earn a day with 10 qualifying stays). They have secret prices when you set up an account with them.
We also stayed at an AirBNB because the hotel selections were expensive when we stayed in Petaluma. A tip to get an even better rate on AirBNB was to book two nights rather than one. Weekly bookings can also reduce the rate even more. Not always, but frequent.
One very cool spot we stayed was at Davies Family Inn in Placerville. They had cabins with fireplaces in the rooms. Very rustic decor in a wooded area. I felt like a bear was going to knock on our door at any time. They had a secret bar under one of the cabins. The grounds also had a wedding venue. Only $115 per night! We were the only guests there, so we got upgraded. They gave us a snack basket that was worth around $20. We definitely plan to stay for a longer period next time we are there. Nearby we ordered pizza from the Pizza Factory. Tuesday night was a large one-topping $13.99 special (usually around double the price).
At one of the wineries one of the workers noticed I had a Cleveland baseball shirt on. He said there was someone there that worked for the Cubs with a World Series ring. We chatted with him and he showed us his ring. I wish he didn’t because it was when the Cubs beat the Indians in the World Series. That hurt. It had over 100 diamonds on it for the number of years the Cubs hadn’t won a World Series. His name was Nick Belmonte and aside from being a scout for the Cubs he also does TV broadcasts for baseball. We chatted about how we hosted baseball players and he said he lived with host parents himself when he played baseball. He thanked us for doing so. He even knew one of the players we hosted.
Because the airline delay was due to American airlines maintenance issues I filed a complaint with them to see if I can get a refund of some sort. They sent me a $50 credit. Not a ton, but something. Know the airline’s contract of carriage to find out their rules as to what you are entitled to. Weather-related delays are don’t qualify for credits. Maintenance issues do. To find out more about what your rights are with delays, cancellation, etc. check out this site: https://www.airfarewatchdog.com/blog/27413089/what-are-my-rights-if-my-flight-is-canceled/
As I’ve mentioned before in previous blogs there usually is an unusual Mother Nature event that occurs during or after our trip. Sure enough, a 5.1 earthquake hit San Jose, close to where we stayed for a night and whose airport we were supposed to fly through. It was the biggest one they’ve had in around a decade. At Michael David Winery they sell Earthquake Zinfandel. To be safe, I didn’t buy any.
