CD RATES INCREASE
The Fed signaled that after their recent 75 basis points bump in their interest rate they are planning to make less aggressive rate increases after this one. Hopefully, it means they feel inflation will decrease enough to stop the interest rate bumps. It will also mean it’s a good time to start looking into CDs as they will eventually peak once the Fed decides to stop with the increases. Currently, CDs interest rates are around 4% and higher. The rates will go higher with upcoming hikes.
Back during the last time the Fed had to sharply increase the interest rates to curb inflation was in the early 80s. Interest rates peaked at 18.87% in 1981! Better than putting money into stocks!
When the Fed interest rate goes down it will also mean mortgage rates will drop. It will take some time before they drop to less than 3% like they were last in 2021. The last time mortgage rates were as high as 7% was around 2002. Still nowhere near the 18.45% rate it peaked at in 1981. It took until after 1990 for mortgage rates to go below 10%!
Another big difference, unemployment in the 80’s was around double what it is now. So if you think things are bad now, they were worse decades ago. The jobs data is still awesome with unemployment rates near record lows (3.7%) and the rate hikes aren’t affecting it. I don’t see that changing. People lessening their spending will have to be the trigger to slow down inflation or in other words, reducing demand.
THAT’S BANANAS
The Aldi in Willoughby Hills is still selling bananas for 16 cents a pound! It’s been that way since around June. Other states I travel to sell bananas at a much higher price. There must be a banana cabal here in Ohio that gets them on the cheap for them.
NOT ON THE UP AND UP
Gas prices sure have jumped around a lot this past month. Just at $3 to just above $4 in places. Oddly enough, the cost of a barrel of crude oil has remained relatively steady in the $80-some dollar range the past two months after hitting a high of over $120 back in June. In June, if I recall right, gas prices were around the lower $4 range. Yet, the gas prices are about the same now. Have to wonder what shenanigans the oil companies are into.
Maybe they are making up for when gas prices tanked when Covid hit and demand for gas dropped a ton because people worked at home rather than drove into the office and many lost their jobs with unemployment hitting around 15%. OPEC dropping production and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine aren’t helping. Less people working remote and instead, driving to the office also increased current demand and prices. Let’s hope we can get Star Trek transporters invented to get us off oil dependence.
WHO’S THE CHEAPEST
A report on which store had the cheapest prices in the Cleveland area was and wasn’t surprising. Aldi and Wal-Mart were cheapest. However, around 90% of what Aldi sells is store brand, so it isn’t a totally fair comparison. What was a bit surprising was that Marc’s was one of the higher priced stores. They used to be much cheaper than everyone. With higher labor costs you are seeing some stores have to hike up their prices and some just can’t compete, especially if they aren’t worker-friendly.

WHAT ARE THE CHANCES
Did you play the Powerball? Now that it’s $1.9 billion is it more tempting? As if $1.9 million isn’t enough. The chances of winning are infintesimal. The hopes of winning are gigantic. It seems many people play to get themselves out of the cycle of life they are in. Let’s take a look at that.
Why play the lottery? Here are probably the top three reasons:
1) Get out of financial trouble.
2) Be able to quit a bad job.
3) Live the life you always wanted to live.
There’s a common theme. Escape. People play the lottery to upgrade their lifestyle. Everyone wants to be a baller and light a cigar with a Benjamin. For example, just look at Facebook and see what people post. Feet pictures at an exotic beach. Not everyone can post those pictures, but everyone wants to.
Millions of us will wake up to find out we didn’t win the lottery. Again. Yet we keep playing and hoping this time it will be us. You have much better odds of winning the Presidency at 1 in 17 million than winning the Powerball at 1 in 292 million. Rationality is not why we play the lottery.
I did play the Powerball when I was in California. I played $6 worth of tickets. I didn’t spend much, after all, it only takes one ticket to win! I won $4. Back to reality…
