PARKING COST INCREASES
In 2026, the city of Cleveland has changed their parking rates and removed parking meters. Previously, parking on downtown streets costs $1 per hour, plus a 35-cent service fee. Charges also ended at 6:00 PM. Not anymore! The monies will be used to improve and fix city street lighting, safety, and other infrastructure. The new rates will take effect when the new signs are installed around the city.
Changes will be made on a rolling basis, so all meters and parking zones won’t see higher rates all at once.
New Standard Rates
1st and 2nd hour: $1.50 per hour
3rd hour: $3.00
4th hour: $4.50
Total cost for a four-hour parking session: $10.50
Special event zones around the stadiums to price parking appropriately and ensure greater availability during events.
Updated Enforcement Hours
Ohio City Paid Parking: 7:00 AM – 10:00 PM, Monday through Saturday
Downtown Paid Parking: 7:00 AM – 10:00 PM, 7 days/week
Cleveland had free parking downtown on weekends, but will no longer do so.
Check for orange signs when parking isn’t allowed.
City officials are also considering a plan that uses cameras to crack down on illegal parking, including double parking and overstaying in short-term parking spaces.

OHIO COUNTY TAX RATES
Sales tax rates for Ohio counties have increased in recent years. Many were around 6.5%, but not anymore. For comparison, Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon don’t have a sales tax. Ohio ranks 21st highest in sales tax when figuring in local sales taxes. The highest combined sales tax is in Louisiana, Tennessee, Washington, Arkansas, and Alabama. Ohio ranks 40th in median income, so the high sales tax rates for Ohio adversely affect the poor as it’s a regressive tax.

LIBRARY LEVIES
As Ohio legislators stop funding libraries, more and more library levies get put on the ballot to make up for the funding loss. In 2026, 48 of Ohio’s 251 library systems operate without a local levy. Forty years ago nearly all of Ohio’s libraries operated without one. Stunning, but it was a way for Ohio legislators to put the burden on taxpayers while funding their pet projects.
TARIFF AFFECTS
Look for prices to increase even more due to tariffs soon as if they haven’t increased enough. Reason being, last year Amazon and other companies bought more stock before tariffs increased. That stock has now withered away, so prices will begin to reflect the increased tariffs that hit after those strategic purchases. Some products such as avocados are being exempt from tariffs, so prices won’t increase for some items…for now.
It also means companies artificially pumped up the economy over-buying to beat the tariffs. That should reverse as companies taper purchases. There may be more items out of stock because companies may not want to replenish stock of items they may have a harder time selling at higher prices.
Conversely, the tariffs aren’t high enough to cause businesses to bring back manufacturing production to the U.S. The ever-changing tariff percentages and business policies amongst other uncertainties give businesses pause to bring manufacturing back. As evidence, the Manufacturing Purchasing Manager Index has been trending down this past year. The index has a strong correlation with manufacturing industrial production.
I did notice at CVS there were a lot less items displayed this year on the top shelves of stores where Christmas gift items would usually be placed. So stores have less to sell from China and other hard-hit tariffed nations.
TIPS FOR THE NEW YEAR
1) If there is an item on a restaurant menu named the Jeffrey Dahmer Meatloaf or Hot Dog special, don’t order it.
2) If your job isn’t paying enough, get a new one or spend the whole day in the bathroom instead of at your desk.
3) Hitchhike in order to save money on gas and entertainment.
4) Hug anyone that is difficult in your life and tickle them a little. Post every reaction in Facebook.
5) When you go on vacation speak with a different accent. Post your spouses reaction on Facebook.
6) To lessen inflammation of sore muscles crawl into the cold freezer section of a store for a bit.
7) Eat more fruits and vegetables.
8) To improve your social skills act as the greeter at your favorite stores. Muscle ahead of any of the actual employed greeters.
9) If you are depressed, start skipping to wherever you need to go.
10) If you can’t think of a theme for your Halloween party, have everyone wear the absolute cheapest clothes they bought in the Kohls clearance racks. Cheapest item wins the costume contest.
KEY WEST TRIP
We took a trip to Key West. Found a great deal using miles on American airlines. Only 13K total roundtrip using miles! The best part is that it flies right into Key West airport. A rental car isn’t needed, so we just took a taxi a few miles to where we stayed.
We stayed at Southwinds. Free breakfast and a pass for a free chair and umbrella at a nearby beach. Very pricey to stay in Key West. Best bet is to book early and check AirBNBs.
We walked in the room and I saw it wasn’t what I booked. The next day they put us in another room, stating that it was the same size as the room we were leaving. They didn’t know what they were talking about because it was pretty much double the size! We spoke with a manager letting her know about it and she credited us the resort fees! So got back around $200!
I think we drank antifreeze and windshield washer fluid in our drinks. Actually, I think it was a key lime or pistachio martini.

One little trick for restaurant/bar deals there is to pick up the BOGO or discount coupon cards at the airport or at excursion booths around town. Some hotels had them too. We used them after happy hour ended.
Had a little psychic event. I was sleeping deeply most every day – on vacation, go figure, and was “told” in my sleep about someone whose name starts with an “A”. Sounded like Anne. The message was that her dad wants to apologize to her and also, not to be mad at him. Sure enough, the first restaurant we go to that day the waitress tells us her name is Allison. Bingo! Knowing her dad must have passed, I needed to delicately find out if it was so. I asked where she was from and she said South Africa. I then asked if her family was here with her. She said her dad passed away 4 years ago, but her mom and sister were living with her. Bingo! My wife told her that I can be psychic. I told her the messages. She welled up. She said that many psychics have told her the same.
She told us more. Turns out she found out her dad that raised her wasn’t her biological dad. She found out her mom had a tryst with her old husband while married with who she thought was her biological dad. She didn’t find all this out until into her 20’s. Her biological dad was a guy she knew, but wasn’t part of her life. So apparently he wanted her to know he was sorry because he carries a lot of guilt not being there for her as she grew up.
We stopped at the Hemingway House. The house is where Ernest Hemingway lived during his most prolific parts of his life. The house was full of 6-toed cats. It smelled like it too.
Roosters and hens are everywhere. No need for alarm clocks.
They have a bunch of CVS and Walgreens stores in Key West. Great for getting souvenirs with ExtraBucks or rewards.
One of the best deals we found were for sweatshirts and shorts for $5. Tons of Key West merch. Some stores sell everything there for $5.
