WHATS IN A NAME
There is still a large contingent of fans that want the Cleveland MLB team to go back to being named the Indians, but did you know what they were called in the past even before they were called the Indians? Some years there was an unofficial and official name. Sometimes the players and/or fans unofficially altered what the team name was. Officially, they were called the Molly McGuires from 1912-1914. Never knew that until I researched it. The Molly McGuires were a clandestine secret Irish organization that was at the forefront of labor rights and violent at times. And some of you thought the Guardians was a bad name…

In the early part of last century they were called the Naps. Not what you do after eating too much turkey and pie for Thanksgiving, but the name was from a player/coach. His name was Napolean Lajoie and a hot-hitting second baseman who was nicknamed “The Frenchman”. He was a hall-of-famer and all-star during his time. It’s equivalent to naming the team the Cleveland Jose’s or Cleveland Kwannies now. Lajoie once spat tobacco in an umps eye. He also got sepsis from getting spiked in his ankle in which dye from his socks got into his bloodstream.

They were named the Spiders early on because many of their players looked spindly like a spider. I guess that’s better than being called the Moles because the players had crops of moles on their body.

There were different baseball leagues that had other teams in Cleveland that were in rival leagues or more of a minor-league team. The following is mostly the start of the roots of the current Cleveland team.

Cleveland Forest Citys – 1871–1872
Cleveland Spiders – 1879–1884
Cleveland Blues – 1887–1888
Cleveland Spiders – 1889–1899
Cleveland Lake Shores – 1900
Cleveland Bluebirds/Blues – 1901
Cleveland Blues/Bronchos – 1902
Cleveland Napoleons – 1903-1905
Cleveland Naps 1906-1911
Cleveland Molly McGuires – 1912-1914 (unofficially called the Naps during those years)
Cleveland Indians – 1915-2021
Cleveland Guardians – 1922 – Present

TAP WATER
Many popular water brands aren’t mineral or spring water, but treated tap water. Many come from the municipal supply and treated. They use fancy words in their advertising such as reverse osmosis which is when a membrane filtration technique that removes contaminants by pressure forcing water through a semi-permeable membrane is used or in other words filtered. Some add minerals which almost is the same as eating a handful of rough dirt with your water.

Municipal water supplies contain water from the community. They know when Covid levels are high because they can measure it in the water. Plus drugs that people ingest and eliminate via the bathroom can be measured and found in the water supply. Not everything can be filtered.

A ploy by restaurants to charge more for water is usually employed by fancy restaurants, especially internationally. They ask if you want bottled water or tap water. Bottled water = $$. Tap water = Free.

The cool thing about water is that the water you had in your coffee could’ve been drank by a dinosaur a million years ago. It could’ve also been the same water you took a shower in or used to wash your car or flushed down the toilet. I’m going with it was drank by a dinosaur.

SPRING TRAININ/TUCSON TRIP
We took a trip to Arizona to attend Spring Training and also for a visit to Tucson. Very interesting trip.

We had dinner with a Cleveland Guardian, Luke Fernandez, whose Mom was with whom I worked, played volleyball and played softball and Dad was with whom I played softball. He was drafted last year by the Guardians. Last year he was Junior College Pitcher of the Year.

We had another dinner with a former player that we hosted, Eli Lingos. We met him up at Bar Louie in Glendale. I still had gift cards for Bar Louie so we were able to use them up there since they are no longer any in the Cleveland area. Got lucky as it was $8 burger Tuesday.

We stayed in Tucson for a weekend with a couple we know. While there we made a trek to Nancy Guthrie’s home and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. That was after I gave them and the FBI a call to give them my psychic insights about the case.

For those of you that don’t fully know me, I can be psychic at times, even on a national scale. For instance, remember the DC sniper case? My wife was talking to her brother who lived near the DC area and just before I went off to bed I stated that whoever they are, their names start with an “M” and they’ll find them in Frederick or Fredicksburg. Sure enough, their names were Muhammed and Malvo and they found them in Frederick. Also, when we were driving past Bellingham, Washington and the case wasn’t solved yet I told my wife there was evil there. Where were Muhammed and Malvo from? Bellingham, Washington.

So, of course, I had to give my 2 cents in the Guthrie case. I called the Pima County Sheriff Department and also the FBI and told them what I was “seeing”. I was seeing the letters Ri Ri and was trying to figure out what it meant. I looked at a map and saw a city just south of Tucson called Rico Rio. That’s what I was seeing. I also told them about a jeep and tall sparse pines. One morning, my wife screams. On TV they said they have their first suspect and he was from…Rico Rio. The first car they confiscated was a Range Rover. They are boxy and looks like…a jeep.

I gave them a lot more info afterwards after that initial call, so I’ll be curious to see if it pans out. Problem is the FBI and Sheriff’s office aren’t doing a good job of following up or working with each other. Being that it’s closing in on month three of the case, it shows that they are bungling it.

We did drive by her place. There were ‘no parking’ signs everywhere, so we couldn’t stop enough for me to get a good vibe. There is a memorial for her and tents across the street with reporters of some sort.

I was hoping to get some major messages while I was there, but only seemed to get mild ones. Although, when I drove through the Oro Valley area my spidey senses were tingling. We’ll see what happens and hopefully she gets found…and alive.

For the first part of the trip we stayed in Scottsdale. Lots of shops, bars, and restaurants there. We booked an AirBNB. It was a condo/apartment within walking distance of Old Town Scottsdale. Since we were staying almost a week I asked the guy renting it if he could give us a 15% discount which happens frequently if booking for a week. He said yes! Hotels are very pricey during Spring Training, so AirBNB’s are the way to go.

We stayed in Chandler one night at a hotel I got for $68. Haven’t stayed at a hotel that cheap in a long while. Found it on Hotels.com and used a discount they sent me. It was walking distance to the hot area of town.

We went to four games. Tickets can be expensive, but if you get the cheapest ticket available you can pretty much sit where you want. Saw Kwan play center field. Bazzana hit a nice homer as did Jose. Saw the Dodgers at their ballpark, but Ohtani wasn’t there.

Car rentals can be expensive due to high demand, so best to rent them early on to get the best price and check often to see if the price went down.

I used Gas Buddy to find the best gas prices. We drove across town a lot, so prices fluctuated from different sides of town. We got gas as cheap as $2.46 per gallon in Tuscon after prices at most stations were $3.29 or more. It was a Shell station and I got 3 cents more off for being a rewards member. While getting gas I heard a ton of cussing. Some lady bumped her car into a guy on a motorcycle. Very colorful language was being exchanged. It was in a sketchy area, so we didn’t stick around.

We used a Restaurant.com discount certificate for one of our meals. Did an Entertainment.com coupon too. Plus did tons of happy hours. The best were:
Scottsdale:
50 Shades of Rose – $1 Smashburgers on Thursdays – Originally $15!
Olive & Ivy – half off bottles of wine on Monday
One Handsome Bastard Distillery – half off drinks
STK Steakhouse – food/drink discounts
Craft64 – drink/food discounts
Postino – half off bottles (all day Monday/Tuesday)
Kyoto – sushi discounts/drink deals
Sauce – half off bottles of wine and light bites
Mobtuak – half off wine bottles on Wednesdays
Bootleggers Smokehouse – half off draft beer, $5 wine, $5 off cocktails, food discounts
Chandler:
Elliot’s Steakhouse – food/drink discounts

I was surprised to find cereal for 99 cents at a Safeway. They had grapes for 99 cents a pound which is double here.

At Walgreens I found 90% off some Native shampoo. Most stores were cleared out, but this one had some.

We flew Southwest and got our seats assigned. They no longer have Groups assigned by when you check in. Seats can be picked up ahead of time. We have a Southwest credit card, so our bags were free. Worth it just for that.

As usual, our flights got messed up. On the way home we had a tight one hour layover. We tried moving to an earlier flight, but they said no and if we wanted to it would cost a ton. Just before the earlier flight was leaving I told my wife to check with the rep one last time. Sure enough, it was a couple hours before our original flight and it went from ‘on time’ to being about an hour late. Good thing we got up early and were at the airport already. They quickly booked us on the earlier flight for free.
