NEW CAR
Long story. Best to get out a bag of Stella Doro bisquits and some tea for this story…

I bought a new car this past week. My 2003 Honda CRV had over 118,000 miles on it and I found out through the car purchasing process it needed a minimum of $5,000 in repairs. So I was screwed with getting a good trade-in value, right? Nope.

Buying a car is like a game. More like Chess and Texas Hold ‘Em and sometimes Chutes and Ladders. You have to play their game and know how they play it and when to call their bluff. There are clues when you know they’ve hit bottom. And you have to know when to fold ’em. Know when to walk away. Know when to run.

This is a great time to look at cars. Dealers want to get rid of their 2010 stock. The 2011 models won’t be out for another month to 3 months. Some dealers are offering great rebates now. Had I waited for the 2011 models I will lose some negotiating power. Plus most likely the rebates will go away.

The salesman were so eager to sell that I made a point to run as fast as I could after I got out of my car to see if I could shake the salesman from hounding me. I hid under some cars to lose some of them too.

The key is to buy a car when you don’t need to get one. That way you won’t buy the car at a price that isn’t good.

I wanted to get another SUV. I wanted something that was rated high in Consumer Reports. I rate quality and reliability high when buying a car. I wanted a car with high resale value. I also wanted to buy a car and not lease it.

Leasing is good for people that change cars often and can’t put much down. With leasing there is a guessing game on miles driven that can cost a lot at the end of the lease if over the alloted mileage. Plus in the end you will not have the car for a trade-in. Granted you could negotiate a deal at the end of the lease, but they hold the cards. And if you do buy it, there is a good chance you will overpay.

People like to set a price they will pay monthly which lends to the dealership coming up with a monthly price that you can afford over as many years as possible. They pad their profit into the amount. Best not to give them an amount. Instead, calculate the total price of the lease and compare it to the cost of buying a new car.

I had planned to drive my old to possibly 200,000 miles. I had put over $2,000 in car repairs this year already. This past week I had it towed because the rear tire caliper was smoking to the point I thought it would catch fire. It was locked up and needed to be replaced. And I knew there were other repairs needed since I had my check engine light on. I was able to find the codes for free when I went to Auto Zone and Murray’s. So I knew it needed a new ELD board, cap-n-rotor, spark plugs, and some emissions stuff.

The way I looked at it was that most car payments were around $300 a month. As long as I kept under that amount I was ok with repairing it as long as repairs were minimal or nonexistent. It started to go over the $300 monthly average for the year. Too many repairs and I still had some costly regular maintenance things I needed to do. Time to shop for a new car…

I went to Honda to have them quote me on what it would cost to get rid of the engine light. Having them just check the codes would cost $85. I told them I was possibly planning on getting a new car. So instead of checking the codes I wanted to see what I can get for the car and how much it would cost for a new one. Since they had to figure out the trade-in value they had to find out what the codes were and the cost. Viola! I now don’t have to pay the $85. They came back with it needing $2500 in repairs. Yipes. So they had me at $4,000 for a trade-in value and around $18,500 for the new CRV. My next move was to thumb wrestle the saleslady for another $1,000 but she preferred rocks, paper, and scissors and I went for paper when she did scissors. Snap.

Next I went to Toyota to see what they had to offer on the RAV4. I told the salesguy that Honda found $2,500 it needed in repairs. Apparently that didn’t matter because after the trade-in guy drove the car they offered me much more for it in trade-in than Honda. In the end they offered me over $6,600! Kelly Blue Book had the car at $6,800 in good condition. It was in good condition for the most part as I kept up with the scheduled maintenance. To find the value of your car go to: http://www.kellybluebook.com.

I then went to Ford. I like that their quality has improved considerably and also that they weren’t part of the bailout package. I respect them for that. I want to buy American too. A lot of American and foreign cars though are partly made here in the U.S. and also made elsewhere.

My first car that I bought was a brand new Firebird. I had one too many problems with that car and it made me look at reliability in cars after that experience. A week into buying it my shifting cable broke. I couldn’t even put the car in reverse.

I have a supplier discount from work with Ford. Many companies get discounts for having the Big 3 as a customer so check with your company to see if they do. Ford offered it right off the bat since I was wearing a shirt with my company name on it.

They pushed the Mercury Mariner on me. So I expected a ton of savings on it since that line is being discontinued. If the deal was great I may consider it. It’s a sister car to the Ford Escape which I had them quote. They said I needed $2,500 in repairs to fix the drive stabilizer. That was on top of the check engine $2,500 repairs. I figured they would offer me a mint they found under a car mat for my car. In the end they gave me the same $6,600 for trade-in!

The Mariner priced about $1,000 lower than the Escape. But the Escape was worth $1,000 more. I told them that and they couldn’t come back with any rationale. I told them I was looking at a significant difference if I was going to get a car from a discontinued line. There was a $2,500 rebate for both. The GM chatted with me more before I fleed and I told them to sharpen their pencil and call me the next day. No call, so I kept my coinpurse shut. Plus the RAV4 was still priced much better than the Escape. The RAV4 also included a $1,000 rebate or I could get low financing with it. I think they know that once you walk out they may never see you come back even if they knock off a few bucks.

Mind you I didn’t test drive any of the cars yet. I wanted to get the numbers first. What they try to do is keep you there and get you attached to the car. The more time you commit, the more you will plan to buy the car.

They also play the “let me check with my manager” game. I think there is a room where they have a cot for them to take 15 minute to half hour naps while they make you wait.

To me I wanted a car that can get me from A to B. I don’t need anything fancy. Just reliable. Some people get fancy cars. Fancy is expensive. If I want to get fancy, I’ll wear a hat. And I can change my hat by my moods. One day a Greek Fisherman’s hat. Another day a tophat. On another day a beret. Projecting my need to show off into my hats will save me thousands.

The way trade-ins work is that the dealership can offer you more of a discount without a trade-in or they can offer you more for the trade-in than the discount. All a bit of a shell game. But I wanted to knock the price of the RAV4 down some more. So I went to Edmunds.com for a faxed price quote. I had another dealership quote me within 24 hours. Their price was lower by about $200. Not knowing the trade value allowed them to offer a lower price. In the meantime I told the other dealership of the price difference and they were able to knock off another $80. Worth the exercise since I found out later that the e-mailed quote didn’t include tax, title, delivery, and any other fees. Checking with other dealerships let me know if I was getting a good price. Getting another dealership to compare the pricing helped immensely. To get an e-mailed quote go to http://www.edmunds.com.

I normally would go to three dealerships to find the best price. I didn’t have the time to look like I wanted to and I was afraid my car may go kaplooey before the end of the week. Being that I went to three different dealerships, albeit different models, that was good. The key is to find out where the bottom is and once they are all around the same amount, you know you’re good to go.

You can show them the invoice price, but there are also back end money the dealerships get so it can be a mystery price that is the real bottom. Either way, once you hear that they are so low that they are barely making money on it, then you know you hit their bottom. I heard that and I knew I was there.

Last was the financing, extras, and extended warranty. All those are negotiable. Some companies like Hyundai are offering standard extended warranties that are super – 10 year, 100K miles!

The key is to first get a good price on the extended warranty that you don’t want – say a 6 year instead of a 7 year that you really want. They will give a good price on the lower one. Then ask what if I go to the next one higher. They figure you have to spend more that you may not want to so they have to entice you more so they offer a better deal. But then ask for lower price. Know that they may meet you half way, so go lower than you think they would take. I went from the price on a 6 to a 7 to an 8 year. The deal got better as I went each year higher.

Initially he offered $1200 for the 6 year package that originally cost $1350. I ended up with an 8 year, 125,000 warranty. Cars tend to start breaking down after 100,000 miles. So extended warranties are usually worthless until after that point. One problem with the new car and it can cost me the cost of the warranty, so an extended warranty is well worth it.

The thing is most people get 5 year, 100,000 warranties. You’ll usually go through 5 years before you hit 100,000 miles. I drove over 118,000 miles in 7 years, so 8 years at 125K is best. They had it at $1,925. He went down to $1,500. I asked for $1,450. He split the difference and met me at $1,475. So instead of saving around 11% with the 6 year package I saved over 23% in concessions on the 8 year package.

I got him to lower one of the prices because of a connection. Making a connection means they have a reason to give you a lower price. The connection was that I saw that his name looked Croatian and I asked him if he was and he said yes. He looked it too. I said hello in Croatian and he answered back – connection made.

Tips: One thing to remember when negotiating is to use positive-leaning sentences. For instance, saying “you can’t take $200 off, can you?” will likely be met with a no. Avoid question mark questions. Instead, say “Let’s go with $200 off and it’s a deal.” Also, don’t blabber on when they start lowering the price. Silence will be usually met with additional concessions.

As far as Toyota’s issues with their brakes I wasn’t worried about them. Toyota is ultra-sensitive to any issues now so they will react quickly to issues. Most of the sensational stories about people driving without the brakes working were found to be that the drivers were pressing the accelerator and not the brakes. And mats can get tangled in any brakes. Notice how there hasn’t been any conclusive findings that there was a found issue. But I don’t like that Toyota took too long to reveal that there may have been an issue.

The Honda CRV wore out much quicker than I expected. We have a Toyota Prius as our other car and we’ve had no issues with it and it has over 110,000 miles on it. The batteries don’t need to be changed until 200,000 miles and even the cost to do that isn’t all that bad if I can get another 100,000 miles out of it. By then I expect to trade it in though.

Toyota and some other car makers offer free maintenance on the first two years – oil changes and tire rotation mostly.

There was a additional rebate for college students and military. When I
bought my Firebird way back when I got the college rebate. They are usually for graduates still within 6 months of graduating. That info can also be found on Edmunds.com.

I tried to get them to include the salesman’s packed lunch, the full collection of waiting room magazines, and a styrofoam cup full of earthworms but I settled for a fine rendition of He’s a Jolly Good Fellow by the whole sales crew. I think the cup of earthworms would’ve been better.

The car cost around $25,000 after taxes and everything. The MSRP, invoice price, and what people are paying can be found on Edmunds.com and KellyBlueBook so they were good reference points. In the end I got it for just under $16,400 after trade-in plus the $1,475 for the extended warranty. I was happy. I was ready to take a ripe canteloupe for my trade-in, but I didn’t let them know that. I let them know I was shopping around. Otherwise they were going to go down the slide on Chutes and Ladders.

TIRE RACK
I had relatively new tires on my car and when trading your car in the dealership gives you a better deal since old tires on car they’re trying to sell won’t do. It’s one of the first things they check. New tires gives the impression the car is in excellent condition. It’s like wearing Buster Browns instead of worn tennis shoes with a suit.

When I buy tires I check Tire Rack first. They have reviews of the best tires for your car. I can either order from them and pay shipping or I try to go to a tire store and have them price match the Tire Rack price.

They list rebates for tires and other deals too.

HMS HOME WARRANTY
I recently got asked about a home warranty service company that I mentioned in one of my classes. They cover plumbing, appliances, and electrical issues. There is a up to $100 deductible to cover the repair person’s visit.

The cost was $415 for the year, but if you have $5,000 in repairs over one year it is well worth it. I’ve had my water tank replaced, furnace repaired, dryer repaired, washer replaced, and tons more. If you have a lot of these items that are on the verge of breaking, having the policy gives peace of mind.

OLD NAVY
Sign up to get their e-mails and get a treat on your birthday. I’m planning on having 365 birthdays this coming year. Partly to get me my Buckeye card too. And would you believe I got carded this past week at Giant Eagle! I’m now more than double the legal age. I wanted to give the cashier a big hug, but she was too fast for me.

RESTAURANT.COM
Get 80% off restaurant gift certificates at restaurants all across the U.S. Get them now before they sell out.
NEW – The gift certificates don’t expire! Reprint your current valid ones with the new terms. Great for those that bought tons at 90% off in September of last year. By the way, word is they won’t be doing the 90% off deal again next month.
Call the restaurant to make sure they are still taking the rest.com gift certificate and also to verify the terms – not taking it for that day? include alcohol? – taking one that says it expired? are they still open? etc…
If a restaurant closes or stops taking the certificate, they will send you a credit to get another gift certificate for the same amount.
Use code: BIG
Deal goes through 8/16.

QUINCEToday’s Deal: $20 for $40 Worth of Bistro Fare at Quince Restaurant in Olmsted Falls. Deals goes through Sunday, August 15th. Certificate expires 2/13/11.

Side note: Quince seeds are supposed to keep ghosts away. The seeds usually come from Italy. So if you have candelabras floating around your house and chairs rocking with seemingly no one in it, eat or take home the quince pie or whatever they may have made of quince seeds and Caspar will high tail it out of your house.
