ALL YOU
Here’s an excerpt of a letter that I received from All You magazine, the magazine that has a bunch of coupons in it that they sell at Wal-Mart:

Dear Mr. Daugirdas,

Please accept my personal thanks for subscribing to ALL YOU. The enthusiastic response to our magazine from real women like you has been overwhelming.

Ok, now I mostly get the magazine for the coupons. But there is also some good info on how to save money. I don’t care about the recipes or fluff pieces. But I didn’t know you had to be a woman to get the magazine. And last I checked my stuff, I was still a man. I had my wife double-check too and she said yes, I’m still a man. Whew!

So I called up the Editor, Clare McHugh, and left a message with her about it. Didn’t return my call. I also e-mailed about it. No response. So I called again recently and she answered! Right off the bat, she came across very dismissive about it saying it was a form letter. Fine.

But that doesn’t fix it because in their pledge written in their magazine it also says: Real-life advice from real women just like you (made me double check my stuff again). I asked if it was only meant for woman. No. And she said there were about 2,000 men out of the million some that get the magazine and they hadn’t complained. Apparently they aren’t persistent cusses like me. I was sensing she could care less and I said she seemed like she could care less. After some stammering by her, she said she would mention it to her people. Jeez, if you’re a man-hater just come out with it. Come to think of it, I’ve never seen a guy or contribution from a guy in the mag.

In this day and age of political correctness I was thrown back when she just didn’t say yes, we need to be more general. If they want to make it a club and not let men join, then fine too. Just state as such. I don’t think there are many men getting Women’s Day magazine or Cosmopolitan, but something tells me there are men that subscribe to them too, I’m sure for the horoscope.

It’s not a huge thing, but I think that when they pigeon-hole genders with the magazine into thinking that women are the only ones that really dig deals and coupons it seems to cater to a caveman/cavewomen mentality. Being that she was the one that started Maxim magazine, I think she has that part down just right.

All the nonsense aside, the magazine is great for coupons and info on deals. You can subscribe to the magazine for about $1.50 an issue or get it at Wal-Mart for $2.49. One thing to be aware of. They make some of their mailing list available to reputable firms.

REUNION
I had my 25th year class reunion recently. Friday night we were up at Panini’s in Willoughby. I think there were about 150 different classmates that showed up. We had over 500 in our class. Most all were recognizable. Some had full heads of gray and some went Kojak. Some got skinnier while some must have ate other classmates. That’s ok, we all get hungry sometimes. Some just looked plain miserable while some were happy go lucky as they always were.

After talking all night we ended up closing the place. A late night foray to IHOP ended the evening. Of course, I hooked up everyone that came along with buy one get one free coupons for IHOP. I think I ate some pancakes there. Long night.

The evening gave me an opportunity to name my 6th grade class in alphabetical order. Not that I made a point to memorize it, but our 6th grade teacher had us call off our names every day for the whole school year. After 180 days of that it sticks, like for a lifetime. Thirty-some years later I can still recite it like it was yesterday.

Bock, Burless, Cromie, Daugirdas (that’s me!), Dow, Dunbar, Farone, Fiorelli, Griffith, Hess, Jeschling, Kalinowski, Klima, Kostelnik, Kuenesh, Markiweitcz, McFadden, Merlene, Miguet, Nubert, Otto, Ruckel, Schaeffer, Scott, Tilk, Vilanni. Eleven of them were at the reunion.

The one gal Nancy Jeshling – now this is amazing – had a family of 17 brothers and sisters. That’s amazing, but get this, both of their parents were blind. Yowza! Kathy Dow went on to write some for the show, Fresh Prince of Belair, the show with Will Smith in it.

Some I still hang with and have known since Kindergarten. They probably have good stories about me. Some I’m sure of me yakking up milk and crackers in Kindergarten or something like that. Or the day I proclaimed myself Emperor of Third Grade and expected my lackeys to do my bidding. That to my surprise didn’t last very long. My buddy, Joe, in elementary school said he was bionic and could see through the wooden cubbyholes where we put our school stuff. I was suspect about it back then and still am now.

Not in that class, but another one of mine was Bunky or Joe Ryan who was at the reunion also. Reminded me, I woke him up in Social Studies one time. Apparently bending over to pick up a book underneath my desk combined to release a sound from my corduroys which woke him up. Light sleeper.

We also had a wedding-like event the next day. Not that anyone was getting married, but it was the get food, sit down, talk, watch people dance, maybe dance, and then watch people slowly exit. We headed to Willoughby Brewing afterwards. The Spazmatics were playing there and one of our classmates plays in the band. It’s a great fun 80’s band. When they got done a bunch of us 85ers got on stage and took a picture with him.

We were all mesmerized by a guy with this Will Ferrel afro, but it was much more afro’d. He was dancing like he was in love with himself. He’d wrap his arms around his head and did this thing that just did not look right. One of the gals from our class said it was her Fed Ex driver! I’ve seen him up there with some other characters, namely some old Guido looking guy that stands by himself and looks around for potential lovers. I’m guessing he goes back home to his dog Cocoa and nobody else. Cocoa loves him, so don’t feel too bad.

Many people don’t go to their reunions. They say they see and talk to everyone from their class already. Or they don’t care to see anyone from their class. I went from conversation to conversation barely walking a foot before I ended up chatting with someone else. I don’t know. To me it was great to see everyone again. Some I hadn’t seen probably since I graduated. Just like with anything, it’s what you make of it. If ya wanna have a bad time, you will. If you want to have a great time, you will. I wanted to have a stupendous time and I did… just like afro man.

OPENING
Marcs – Avon Lake
650-GOLD – Middleburg Heights
Lifestyle Furniture – Mentor
Bella Vino Winery – Perry
Middle East Grille – Shaker Heights

CLOSING
Somers Diner
John’s Aquarium – Willoughby – I was at the store today and the owner told me he will be liquidating. Too tough to run a tropical fish/aquarium business with people selling theirs for cheap on Craigs List. The pet business is tough in this economy.
