SELF SCANNERS
217 Albertsons grocery stores are doing away with their self-scan registers. The Super-Value owned Albertson stores aren’t effected. It’s significant because they one of the largest chains in the U.S. Apparently they want the cashiers to react with the customers so that they have a better experience. Half the time someone has to help the folks at self scan registers so they figured why have them. They are good for small orders and for people not using coupons. It might help people that crab about waiting for people that use coupons to use such a line.
Speaking of, one thing I hear some people say is to do away with coupons and the price will go down. Some stores don’t take coupons and the price isn’t that much different than what you would find in other stores. Aldi’s, Costco, and Sam’s Club don’t take coupons. If you compare what you can get there to stores with coupons the price is usually cheaper after coupons, especially when the item is on sale. Those stores have different structures too so you have to try to compare apples to apples on the pricing. Aldi’s have a lot of store brand items. Costco and Sam’s Club sell in bulk. Do you really think the stores would lower prices or would they try to just make more in profit?
I regularly can find cereal for $1 and less using coupons. What are the chances I would find the same price for name brand items at stores that don’t use coupons? Rarely, if ever. Coupons so rock.

How ’bout some coin…
ROCKIN PICK-N-PAY
My buddy that I’ve known since elementary school sent me the You Tube video below. It shows a flash mob band playing in a supermarket. Back when I was in high school we did something similar. Only I think it was better.
It was tag day, a day where band members would try to raise funds for band stuff. Our first stop was in a person’s front yard. They had a flagpole with the American flag in the front yard. We stopped and played the National Anthem. The lady was home and she obliged us with a donation.
Our next stop was at Shoregate Shopping Center. We went to Pick-n-Pay. Remember them? The store then was owned by Finast and then Tops. I get a kick out of their name. Why not Pick-n-Run or Pick-n-Pick? Oh yes, they wanted you to pay after you picked. That’s right. That makes sense. And I don’t think I’d want to buy anything there if they were named Pick-n-Flick or Pick-n-roll-it-Around.
Our plan was to march up and down the aisles. It was about 10:30 AM or so. We had pretty much one of each instrument. I had to do double-duty as we didn’t have a bass drummer so I played that while playing my e-Flat horn which was the equivalent of a French Horn. I probably could’ve tied up some cymbals on my knees, but two instruments were enough. I didn’t play drums in band, but I just kept beat so that wasn’t too hard. We had someone with a can up front – I think a flag or baton twirller gal. She would collect some change from the shoppers using the help of her outward beauty. The rest of us marched down the aisles playing tunes.
I remember some of the songs we played back in marching band were Maneater By Hall & Oates, Don’t Cry for Me Argentina from Evita, and I Don’t Go For That by J Geils Band. You know, some of the big hits of the 80’s. We marched from aisle to aisle playing the songs. I’m guessing some shoppers dropped load after we started blaring our instruments. Not often do you hear a band playing in a store on Saturday morning.
After we left the store we headed down the sidewalk of the shopping center playing songs. We played by Winklemans, Alesci’s, Woolworth’s, Best and some other stores back in the center. Some of the stores are still there.
What it taught me is should one day I become destitute in order to make some cash I could be that guy playing my French Horn in front of a decrepit building trying to make a buck. If one of these days you hear Maneater playing off in the distance be sure to look for me and drop a few coins in my jar.
