SELF SCANNERS
217 Albertsons grocery stores are doing away with their self-scan registers. The Super-Value owned Albertson stores aren’t effected. It’s significant because they one of the largest chains in the U.S. Apparently they want the cashiers to react with the customers so that they have a better experience. Half the time someone has to help the folks at self scan registers so they figured why have them. They are good for small orders and for people not using coupons. It might help people that crab about waiting for people that use coupons to use such a line.

Speaking of, one thing I hear some people say is to do away with coupons and the price will go down. Some stores don’t take coupons and the price isn’t that much different than what you would find in other stores. Aldi’s, Costco, and Sam’s Club don’t take coupons. If you compare what you can get there to stores with coupons the price is usually cheaper after coupons, especially when the item is on sale. Those stores have different structures too so you have to try to compare apples to apples on the pricing. Aldi’s have a lot of store brand items. Costco and Sam’s Club sell in bulk. Do you really think the stores would lower prices or would they try to just make more in profit?

I regularly can find cereal for $1 and less using coupons. What are the chances I would find the same price for name brand items at stores that don’t use coupons? Rarely, if ever. Coupons so rock.

How ’bout some coin…

ROCKIN PICK-N-PAY
My buddy that I’ve known since elementary school sent me the You Tube video below. It shows a flash mob band playing in a supermarket. Back when I was in high school we did something similar. Only I think it was better.

It was tag day, a day where band members would try to raise funds for band stuff. Our first stop was in a person’s front yard. They had a flagpole with the American flag in the front yard. We stopped and played the National Anthem. The lady was home and she obliged us with a donation.

Our next stop was at Shoregate Shopping Center. We went to Pick-n-Pay. Remember them? The store then was owned by Finast and then Tops. I get a kick out of their name. Why not Pick-n-Run or Pick-n-Pick? Oh yes, they wanted you to pay after you picked. That’s right. That makes sense. And I don’t think I’d want to buy anything there if they were named Pick-n-Flick or Pick-n-roll-it-Around.

Our plan was to march up and down the aisles. It was about 10:30 AM or so. We had pretty much one of each instrument. I had to do double-duty as we didn’t have a bass drummer so I played that while playing my e-Flat horn which was the equivalent of a French Horn. I probably could’ve tied up some cymbals on my knees, but two instruments were enough. I didn’t play drums in band, but I just kept beat so that wasn’t too hard. We had someone with a can up front – I think a flag or baton twirller gal. She would collect some change from the shoppers using the help of her outward beauty. The rest of us marched down the aisles playing tunes.

I remember some of the songs we played back in marching band were Maneater By Hall & Oates, Don’t Cry for Me Argentina from Evita, and I Don’t Go For That by J Geils Band. You know, some of the big hits of the 80’s. We marched from aisle to aisle playing the songs. I’m guessing some shoppers dropped load after we started blaring our instruments. Not often do you hear a band playing in a store on Saturday morning.

After we left the store we headed down the sidewalk of the shopping center playing songs. We played by Winklemans, Alesci’s, Woolworth’s, Best and some other stores back in the center. Some of the stores are still there.

What it taught me is should one day I become destitute in order to make some cash I could be that guy playing my French Horn in front of a decrepit building trying to make a buck. If one of these days you hear Maneater playing off in the distance be sure to look for me and drop a few coins in my jar.

COUPON CLIPPING SERVICES
Can you buy coupons? No, that’s illegal. Can you pay for the services of coupons to be clipped to get coupons? Yes. These services get around the rule that way. Getting coupons from coupon clipping services is how many of the folks on Extreme Couponing get their coupons. They don’t show you that the folks had to pay these services for the coupons.

I’ve never used the service myself as I get enough from the newspapers I purchase and from those who save them for me. If I need extra sets of coupons I can get extra papers on Mondays where they sell the Sunday paper cheaper. Usually $1.25 instead of $2. You can find these deals at Giant Eagle, CVS, Discount Drug Mart and many other stores. The Sun Newspaper is 75 cents or less at stores that discount their paper and it usually contains the same set of coupons you get in the PD.

Many people ask me if they can just buy the inserts from the newspaper. You can’t purchase just inserts from newspapers as it’s illegal for any inserts not distributed in newspapers to be taken, given away or donated. Odd rule, but apparently the Coupon Police think it will lead to trouble.

There are many coupon-clipping service sites. They usually charge depending on how many coupons are ordered. For instance, they may charge $1 for twenty 50 cent coupons. There may be a small administrative fee and a minimum order amount plus postage. The service is great for those that don’t have many coupons in their papers, if any at all. They usually give clearance deals on coupons that are soon to expire.

TRADER JOES
Trader Joe’s grew to fame when they started selling Two Buck Chuck,. It was Charles Shaw wine that cost $2 a whole bottle and it was decent. It’s now over $3 and still a bargain. They do take coupons – regular manufacturer coupons and internet ones too. They have a great variety of healthy food. Much of it is organic and natural.

Look for new stores to open in Kansas City; Chicago (South Loop); Leawood, Kan. Louisville; Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; Pittsburgh; Spokane, Wash.; State College, Penn.; and Staten Island.

REGAL CINEMAS
They are giving away one million bags of popcorn. To get a free bag to popcorn.yahoo.net on your Smartphone.

When you purchase a $50 Regal gift card at Giant Eagle you can get 20 cents in fuelperks. Valid through 7/13. Deals also good for AMC gift cards.

CHECKS AND BALANCES
Did you ever have a class where a substitute teacher showed up and the class just acted like a bunch of lunatics. Of course, we all did. The kids knew they can usually get away with more so they act up. I liken it to loose regulations. When the principal or a regular teacher showed up the kids started acting like they should – nice and quiet. I liken that to effective regulations or checks and balances if you will.

When businesses or any other outfit sees an opening to get what they want by loosened regulations they fight for it. Usually it’s because they can make more money, greed in many cases, because sometimes it’s at the peril of something that matters little to them but a lot to others whether it be health, environment, livelihood or whatever.

Another case in point is the banking industry. I don’t have to explain much there as they took advantage of loose regulations. Even natural gas fracking has posed health risks to water supplies to the point water in homes where there is fracking catches fire if lit (check out the movie Gasland – http://www.gaslandthemovie.com), but these companies are downplaying the issues. Umm, water on fire…not good. Why is it that some think it is ok to sacrifice our health so that a company can make profits? Greed before health!? Priorities are mixed up if that is the case.

But lately there has been one that has to do with teachers. Some investigations have discovered that teachers and principals created an environment of cheating on standardized tests. They would erase the incorrect answers and write in the correct ones. One principal even opened an ethics investigation on a whistleblower. What in the banana peppers was that principal thinking. Wouldn’t it been nice to have the mess from Dimora and Russo cleaned up much sooner had whistleblowers raised the red flag sooner. Even the whistlblowers from Enron were castigated. Cheats don’t like whistleblowers.

What would teachers have to gain by helping kids get better scores, albeit serupticiously? Bonuses. Higher test scores mean teachers and administration get bonuses and some get to keep their jobs.

So what does regulation or checks and balances have to do with this too? Turns out they resisted the need to have some type of independent examination. A total of 178 teachers and principals were named in the investigation with 82 of whom confessed. They aren’t the only district with these issues. It’s no wonder many schools have issues when these are some of the kinds of teachers and administrators that are being employed. All the cutbacks in funding will only make things worse in our schools.

Checks and balances work best. By eroding them over time there is a good chance someone will take advantage of it and do what’s good for them and only them. If you don’t believe me, try giving your teens the keys to the liquor cabinet and leave the home for the week and let them police themselves. Just like at home where a good structure works best, so does it in the everyday world. Spouses and good friends are also good regulators as they will usually tell you when you are doing something stupid. So is the good angel on your left shoulder. The right shoulder devil not so much.

Check out the story on a school district that discovered cheating on standardized test here:

PERFORMANCE BIKE
We went on a bike ride from Willoughby Hills to Chagrin Falls and then Bainbridge over the 4th weekend. It was about 40 miles round-trip. Very scenic ride as we rode along the river and country-like roads, but the hills can be a bear. I was going tricycle speed up some of the hills they were so steep. Going down them was fun. I think if I let off the brake going down I would’ve launched and landed back in my yard. I could sense my legs were getting so muscled out that my pants were starting to rip apart just like the Hulk’s. Maybe next time I’ll ride a Big Wheel instead to see if it is any easier.

Performance Bike is a store that has all your bike needs and they usually are having a sale of some sort. Locally you can find them at Eastgate and Rocky River. They’re in many cities across the U.S.
