WOIO
I filmed a segment with Denise Dufala from WOIO that is supposed to air on Nov 1st. They filmed at my class at Fairview Park Library and me shopping at Dave’s Supermarket. I spent about $10 for about $50 worth of groceries there. Not that easy to save at Dave’s as their ads are small, they don’t take internet coupons, and items are priced higher, but they do double coupons of 99 cents and less so that helped. I got yogurt, kitty litter, V8, Snuggle, Dr Pepper, pizza, and a few other things. One guy kept trying to get on camera even grabbing my cart while we were filming. Denise was great to work with. The date it airs may change, but it should be sometime the first week in November.

CELLPHONE/SMARTPHONE TIPS
– Purchase mobile phone accesories online at substantial discounts. I got a car charge for my cellphone for just $4 on http://www.cellphoneshop.net (Get 15% Discount On Any Purchase. Coupon Code: BICJOCT11).

– Site like Textfree offer free unlimited text minutes. Find them at http://www.pinger.com/content/home.html or http://textem.net/. In essence, it’s like using wi-fi from home or a place that offers free wi-fi to send it via your laptop to send it.

– Some companies have discounted plans for seniors like AT&T.

– Many stores will give you credit or cash for your old cellphone if you recycle it with them. They can be sold too on a variety of sites like http://www.cellphonetradeins.com. Some sites give any proceeds to charity like http://www.charitablerecycling.com.

– Try to get on the same carrier as others you speak with a lot to get free mobile-to-mobile minutes.

– Be careful with gotchas – listening to voicemail uses up minutes, don’t miss rebate deadlines, some pay as you go phones won’t allow more minutes to be added during the month and expire if you don’t renew minutes, and find out if the phone you want is new or refurbished.

– Trade you cell phone plan with another user to avoid the early termination fee with a service found at http://www.celltradeusa.com or http://www.cellswapper.com for about $20.

– At http://www.validas.com they will analyze your cell bill and “right-size” it by offering the best plans for you and recover disputed amounts and overages.

YOU BIG DUMMY
I had to slap my knee a few times with this one. Check out this recent police blotter:

A former employee of a local dry cleaner was arrested Sept. 26, accused of taking a credit card that was left in clothing dropped off by a customer on Sept 4 and using it to attempt to purchase about $400 worth of goods at area Giant Eagles and Get-Go stations, including stores in Chagrin Falls, Solon, and Cleveland Although the Twinsburg man, 53, was captured on store surveillance video, an even bigger giveaway was the fact that he used his own Giant Eagle Advantage card while making the transactions, in order to receive discounts on his own store account.

Now kudos for using his Advantage card, but by my calculations he got a maximum of $24 worth of additional fuelperks with the purchase. Silly criminals…

FOR RICHER AND POORER
There has been lots of protests lately across the world about how the rich and banks have used their power to take advantage of the poor. It also reflects the frustrations of the working class. Here’s my 2 cents on what is happening.

Let me start with the flat tax. Beware of the flat tax! Simple is not always better unless some of you want to pay more in taxes with a flat tax. Every year there is an idea for a flat tax that is floated around saying it will make things better and a lot of people like the idea because, well, it’s simpler. However; almost all flat taxes reduce taxes for the rich and increase them for the poor. One being mentioned now increases sales taxes by 9%, increase taxes on the poor by 9%, eliminates the mortgage deduction, and reduces taxes for the rich. I’ll take complex taxes thank you.

Some are even saying that the poor pay no income taxes when they should! Some of those same people don’t know what a progressive and regressive tax is. Or if they do, they know people won’t take the time to find out the poor pay more taxes right now than the rich as a percentage of their income on sales taxes, utility taxes, gas taxes, and many other taxes (called a regressive tax). The rich have to pay more in taxes on other income to balance things out (called a progressive tax). And after all, they should. How many rich people that aren’t greedy do you know that say they don’t have enough money?

Some say the rich deserve what they made and shouldn’t be punished by paying more in taxes. Sure they do, but I would say the same about workers that are poor or in the middle class. Many of them have hard, physical jobs or demanding jobs. They deserve every penny they get. No golf course meetings, golden parachutes when they bankrupt companies, or high pay for poor stock performance for them. The big picture is that we were almost in another Great Depression and the last time we got out of it is by taxing the rich more and it helped catapult the economy. Would you believe the rich got taxed on 90% of their income back then all the way up to the 1960’s! Yet increasing their taxes a few percent is what’s hampering us now while their taxes are tons less of what it was back then. Cutting government costs is not going to do it alone. In good times it can be reversed, but not now.

It’s also ridiculous because the poor have seen their income stagnate while the rich have seen their income quadruple since 1979, yet they feel the poor and middle class don’t pay enough in taxes and the rich do! So who is really starting all this class warfare?

The Occupy Wall Street groups have had enough with the income disparities and catering to the rich and powerful. Their movement has gone worldwide yet you hear some commentators disparage the protestors appearance without, more importantly, investigating what the movement is all about. People from that group got arrested for standing up for their moral convictions, yet there has not been one banker or politician arrested even though they brought us to the brink of a Great Depression with their back-handed dealings. Do the rich worry about paying for food, insurance, medical, housing, etc. like the poor do with the little they make? I know people that don’t have insurance because it is too expensive even though they have jobs! How can they empathize if so?

Did you ever watch the show Undercover Boss? The boss works as an underling in disguise. After working a day in their jobs they find out it isn’t so easy and that the pay makes it hard to get by on just the necessities. Funny what a little empathy will do. Some of their lifestyles and preconceived notions get them from seeing what life is really like for many of us. It’s just easy to label a group because it’s hard not to treat them as individuals and especially when you don’t walk a mile in their shoes.

When you hear people like Warren Buffet and other billionaires saying they want to be taxed more, why aren’t we doing so? In 2011, the top 1% own 40% of the U.S. wealth. The bottom 80% own only 7%. That is not healthy for any nation. Eventually the rich get bold and think they can flaunt their power with nary any opposition. Now that the scales have tipped so far, things will start to implode just as they did when the Roman Empire fell.

The rich won’t create jobs some say if you tax them more. Well, the tax cuts for the rich were extended and the unemployment rate is still horrible. It was the housing industry that propped up the economy for so many years and not the tax cuts until the economy collapsed with the bank and mortgage mess. It’s evidenced by the states that relied on the housing industry heavily to provide jobs. They used to have very low unemployment as compared to the rest of the nation. Now they have the highest unemployment – those states being – California 12.1%, Nevada 13.4%, Arizona 9.3%, Georgia 10.2%, Florida 10.7%, South Carolina 11.1%, North Carolina 10.4% (other states above 10% – Rhode Island 10.6%, Mississippi 10.3%, Michigan 11.2%).

Same goes for corporations. We need to tax them less some say. The U.S. did when they allowed them to repatriate foreign profits back from 2004 to 2006 to use towards job growth and other investment and not for stock buyback and executive compensation. No documentation was required though. Guess what happened? The study found that the 15 firms that brought the most income home found that they employed 21,000 fewer employees in 2007 than 2004. How’s that for accountability. And you want to trust that they are going to do the right thing by letting them regulate themselves?! Remember how watered down bank regulations in the 80’s led to the S&L crisis to thousands of bank closures to the current bank lending mess. It’s like a parent giving the keys to teenage Johnny for the car and liquor cabinet and throwing some cash on the floor and telling him to behave.

Corporations are sitting on over a trillion dollars of cash. They are not spending it partly because they need to sell more in order to spend it in order to hire more workers. Some proposals are giving them breaks but how is giving more cash to corporations gonna fix it? They already have enough. It needs to get in the hands of regular folks that are without jobs so that they can spend more. Consumer spending will get this economy going again. Cut taxes for regular folks so they can spend it – they will! Regular folks don’t put their money offshore Swiss accounts.

Not everyone can afford college. And many going to college now are stuck working as bartenders or waitressing until they find a job in their field, if they ever do. Hard to get a job in your field when there are none available. Notably though, the unemployment rate for those with college degrees is much, much lower than those with little post-education. There are some that still say, just get a job you lazy person! Work at McDonalds. Umm, there are about 4.6 people vying for every available job out there now. It was 6 to 1 so it’s getting better, but hardly anywhere to the point people can just fill out an application and bam, can you start Monday. And do you really think McDonalds wants to hire overqualified people? Many low-paying jobs offer high-cost or no health insurance and the percentage is increasing. One illness and it can be financially devastating.

Another ludicrous thing that is happening is that the unemployed aren’t even being considered for a job by some companies, because, would you believe, they are unemployed! Sure there are some bad apples that are unemployed and that is what the interview process should weed out. Are they saying that anyone employed isn’t a bad apple? Crazy.

I teach a lot of classes and I hear stories of how tough it is out there and how families struggle to make ends meet because one or both parents have lost their jobs. A survey by Careerbuilder.com found that 77% of people were living paycheck to paycheck in 2010. The percentage was 43% in 2007, 49% in 2008, and 61% in 2009. It’s hard to make ends meet when many of the jobs available are low-paying. More health care costs are being paid by workers now too, diminishing the real wage people make. The vast majority of the poor and middle class are hard workers, want to be self-sufficient, and just want an honest wage to make ends meet. Sure, we need to make sure people don’t get comfortable getting handouts from the government and the way to do that is to make sure there are plenty of good jobs available. There are too many poverty-like, I-gotta-work-two jobs paying jobs out there. So not just jobs, but good jobs.
