GIANT EAGLE
Earn 20 cents in fuelperks with the purchase of $50 in restaurant gift cards. Over 50 restaurants available. Through 10/5.
******************

There have been rumblings that Giant Eagle is planning to announce a new coupon policy. Many fear that doubles will go away, however from what I understand instead it will be a new program that will offer more manufacturers coupons to consumers. So it’s a good thing! Let’s hope that is the case as I know myself and most other couponers wouldn’t want to shop at Giant Eagle should they do away with doubles.

Many coupon policies have been changing for the worse, especially since the debut of Extreme Couponing, but some are actually improving their coupon policies. For instance, Buehlers started to double coupons. Wal-mart is also testing doubling with the thoughts to go nationwide. But many stores have new limitations for the worse including limiting like coupons and limiting internet coupons amounts. Some are not allowing double BOGO’s (a buy one get one free coupon used with a buy one get one free sale). Stay tuned, but any couponer knows that when a store limits coupons it lessens the chance shopping there and thus the store won’t sell as many other items lowering its sales volume.

POVERTY
Unfortunately poverty rates are still high this year. While those households making $200,000 or more seeing income unchanged from 2009 to 2010, households making less than $35,000 annually grew. The economy has hurt the poorest the most.

Cleveland was ranked #3 in poverty with 34% of its population in poverty. Detroit was first at 37.6% and San Bernadino, CA was second at 34.6%. Rochester, NY was fourth at 33.8%, Miami fifth at 32.4%, Laredo, TX sixth at 31.4%, Cincy seventh at 30.6%, and Newark, NJ eighth at 30.2%. The federal level of poverty for a family of four with two children earns $22,113 annually.

Good jobs are just not being created even though tax cuts were extended and corporations are sitting on over a trillion dollars in cash. A Brookings Institute study found that of the 10 most common occupations in Ohio, most don’t pay enough to keep a family of three out of poverty. Incredible. Sure it’s great to create jobs, but are they good jobs that can support a family. Day care is so expensive that sometimes it doesn’t even pay to have one spouse work.

When you have those in Congress that make millions saying they can’t make ends meet it shows how out of touch they are with the working class. One said he only had $400,000 left after taking care of his expenses. Only $400,000! Wow. Read this story: http://news.yahoo.com/gop-congressman-scraping-only-400-000-taxes-172044706.html
The poor and middle class need help with good jobs and the policies should reflect it…so should the people representing us.

SNL
Remember the skit on Saturday Night Live with Alec Baldwin and the two gals playing NPR radio co-hosts? The SNL gals nailed it acting like the typical soft spoken public radio hosts. Very hushed and deliberate. And then Alec Baldwin brought up his Schwetty balls recipe. That skit was a classic. Well, now you too can now get Schwetty balls! Ben & Jerry’s Schwetty balls that is. Salty and sweet at the same time. I saw them at Giant Eagle. The ice cream that is. It’s called Ben & Jerry’s Late Night Show ice cream…a bit more discreet with the name.

Linda, a host on the WELW show I’m on brought it up the other week that they were selling it. Apparently people are calling Giant Eagle and other stores and asking if they have Schwetty balls. After a hang-up or two they find out they are not kidding.

I made a special trip to go back into the store after I remembered to see if they sold it. Of course, it was after I checked out. I didn’t want to ask a stocker or cashier about it to see if they had it in stock. Then again with some I wonder what kind of answer I would get if I asked them if they had Scwetty balls?

WELFARE
Florida passed a law to test people on welfare for drugs. Makes sense you would think. Nobody wants to see people get welfare and then waste the money on drugs. Most everyone thought that they would find tons of people on welfare on drugs. But would you believe only 2% tested positive. As they say, never judge a book by it’s cover.

http://www.news-press.com/article/20110828/NEWS01/108280382/Florida-welfare-drug-tests-largely-clean
Did the media or people’s prejudices cause people to think the worst of welfare recipients? Or are they just regular folks whose hard luck forced them into government assistance? Sure, there are those that take advantage of the system but even rich people and even companies work the system. And perhaps they ought to test politicians that passed the law too!

Many states have able bodied people work if they are on welfare as Ohio does. However, federal officials didn’t waive a $32.7 million fine against for Ohio not getting half of able bodied welfare recipients working or pursuing employment. The fine was from 2007 and the fines continued as Ohio is only at 33% currently instead of the required 50%. In order to avoid complaceny I’m all for welfare folks working for their dollars while they look for a real job. And I also think it would be good for them to take a coupon class! Sadly, there are too many low-paying jobs out there and not enough better paying jobs that make it tough for families to make ends meet. I know of many people that don’t work because it’s too expensive to pay for daycare. It’s a vicious cycle that would be solved with an excess of good paying jobs.

RICH
Did you see the comments by Warren Buffet that the U.S. government should stop coddling the super-rich? Buffet paid less in taxes at 17.4% of his taxable income, less than most of the middle class. His federal tax equaled just 64 shares of his Berkshire stock! Yet there were politicians fighting for them to keep their tax breaks when the country needs the money to reduce their debt on top of cutting spending.

The rich make so much that they also pay a disproportionate percentage of taxes. Trickle down economics didn’t work as the tax breaks for the rich were extended and there wasn’t a surge of jobs. And remember regressive and progressive taxes balance out what the rich and poor pay. For instance, a poor person still pays higher taxes as a percentage of their income for gas, merchandise, utilities, and other commodities than the rich pay. In theory, with higher taxes for the rich it’s supposed to even out. Hence the reason a flat tax, depending on how it is put together, would not exactly be fair to the poor and middle class. There are a lot of schemes out there that the rich and powerful will float out there to make more money and they will use their dollars and power to effect the media to get the message out like the changes to social security. Yet people like Buffet don’t even want the tax breaks! And while the rich have seen their income surge, the poor and middle class haven’t, causing issues with consumer spending which is what the economy needs. When the economy gets better then that is a time to look at tax cuts for the rich and everyone else, but not at this time. The rich can absorb it unlike the poor and middle class.

CEO PAY
Get this. Twenty-five of the 100 highest paid U.S. CEOs earned more last year than their companies paid in federal income tax, a study by IPS found. It also found many of the companies spent more on lobbying than they did on taxes.

Compensation for the 25 CEOs with pay surpassing corporate taxes averaged $16.7 million, according to the study, compared to a $10.8 million average for S&P 500 CEOs. Here is a sample:
* eBay whose CEO John Donahoe made $12.4 million, but which reported a $131 million refund on its 2010 current U.S. taxes.
* Boeing, which paid CEO Jim McNerney $13.8 million, sent in $13 million in federal income taxes, and spent $20.8 million on lobbying and campaign spending
* General Electric where CEO Jeff Immelt earned $15.2 million in 2010, while the company got a $3.3 billion federal refund and invested $41.8 million in its own lobbying and political campaigns.
Others that were part of the list in the past were Tyco, Enron, and Worldcom and we all know what happened to them.

Two-thirds of the firms studied kept their taxes low by utilizing offshore subsidiaries in tax havens such as Bermuda, Singapore and Luxembourg. The remaining companies benefited from accelerated depreciation.

Greed can breed the worst in people. Paying people a fair wage at all levels is needed. There have even been CEOs getting paid a ton in bonuses even when their company has lost millions and their stock value has plummeted. Banks that almost put us into a Depression are a good example. CEOs should not be the ony people to benefit when a company does well also. When companies make record profits it should be shared with those at all levels of the company. Many companies do that as they know it will help motivate people to produce even more in profits but there are some that don’t. That should raise some red flags at those companies.

COMMENTS ON MY BLOG
Here’s another message I got from a spammer. Good to see their family loves me blog. What I get a kick out of is that his cousin and I apparently have secret insights into his problem. Yes, maybe when I wrote about Staples deals he was down about not finding Elmers glue for 5 cents. Here it is:

I was suggested this website by my cousin. I’m not sure whether this post is written by him as nobody else know such detailed about my problem. You’re wonderful! Thanks!

Kroger is eliminating doubles from their biggest to smallest market from what it looks like even though they said they were only eliminating doubles in Houston. If you aren’t happy about them eliminating doubles please voice your displeasure at http://www.bringbackdoubles.com and let store managment know also.

Just like when Coke listened to consumers when they got rid of New Coke an brought back the Classic Coke, Kroger needs to listen to consumers to do the same. Their gas perks are a joke and many have reported that prices weren’t lowered as Kroger has said they have done.

The other stores in the top 25 list of market share ranked by # stores (with doubles): Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Tuscon, Phoenix, Detroit, Cincinnati, Denver, Columbus, Nashville, Louisville, Indianapolis, Wichita, Dayton, Little Rock, Lexington, Toledo… Kroger dominates the market share in about 50 major market areas, only in 4 of these markets they do not rank first in market share.

The Fox station in Dallas did a story about the issue and mentioned the Bringbackdoubles.com site! Here is a link to the story:
