HOUSTON CHRONICLE
The Houston Chronicle quoted me on a story about Kroger getting rid of double and triple coupons in the Houston market. Hopefully the folks there will be successful in changing Krogers mind. There are a lot of poor folks that count on double coupons to feed their family.
Kroger said they have new programs instead. But get this – the new gas program they have is you have to spend $1,000 there to get $20 off of their gas. They must think people are bad at math. That is horrible savings. I save at least $100 using double coupons a week! That isn’t a deal, it’s a smokescreen to fool people into buying more at their store and cost them less and customers more. Other stores may follow the lead if customers don’t pay attention.
With fuelperks at Giant Eagle you save $3 for every $50 spent IF you get the full 30 gallons you are allowed. Even when they do the 20 cents off per gallon off at GetGo when you buy $50 worth of gift cards the most you will save is $6 for every $50 spent on gift cards. If I spent $50 in groceries I usually save at least $35 using coupons. The savings will never be as good with gas programs as they are with double coupons. Only four .75 coupons saves me as much at the Fuelperks program does with every $50 spent. When they tried to get rid of doubles in Cleveland they also tried to say they had other savings programs instead.

Why so glum…
OLD FAMILY PICTURES
Did you ever see people posing for pictures back in the 1800’s or early 1900’s. They apparently didn’t invent the word smile until after World War 2. They all have scowls or looks of disdain. They are serious looking and all business. Think about it. Have you ever seen a birthday picture from that era with everyone smiling and laughing while they blow out the birthday candles. I’ve never seen one, but then again it’s not often I’m checking out pictures from a century ago.
Maybe they were all drugged with cocaine since Coke was made of it back during that time. Or maybe they scowled because they all smelled so bad. It’s not like they all took showers every day. They had bathtubs where they shared water. Apparently the family would bath with the man, then the woman, then the children and baby bathing in that order. Hence the term, don’t throw out the baby with the bath water. I couldn’t imagine bathing in all that yuck. No wonder they got married so young back then. They then moved up the pecking order for baths.
Most of the vintage family portraits I’ve seen scare me too. The children look like they are all Satan’s spawn. Their looks are piercing and just go through you. And the adults look like they not only have a gaze that looks like they want to kill you, but they also plan to eat you too.
I also wonder why there isn’t one of them that cracks a smile. There had to be at least one joker in the family that was clowning it up for a picture, but I’ve never seen one. I wonder if knock knock jokes were invented during that time. That I’m sure would have had them cracking up. Them knock knock jokes are knee-slappers.
There’s always one clown in each family…

ETHANOL GAS
Does your gas station use ethanol gas, a blended fuel? You might be spending the same for ethanol fuel as regular gas, but getting less bang for your buck. E85 (85% ethanol), will produce lower mileage than gasoline, and will require more frequent refueling. Based on EPA tests for all 2006 E85 models, the average fuel economy for E85 vehicles resulted 25.56% lower than unleaded gasoline. Actual performance may vary depending on the vehicle. But in other words, if you fill up with ethanol fuel at $3.75 a gallon it is really costing you $4.72 when considering ethanol’s fuel economy.
Ethanol fuel is widely used in Brazil and in the United States, and together both countries were responsible for 86 percent of the world’s ethanol fuel production in 2009.
Many gas stations sell ethanol. You may be surprised yours sells gas with ethanol. Sometimes it’s not visible that ethanol is used in the gas. Ask the cashier if the gas station has ethanol in their gas.
