POLICE BLOTTER
I got a kick out of this recent police blotter story. A Highland Heights woman, 51, was arrested Sept. 14 for stealing a suppository at the CVS on SOM Center Road (I go there!). The estimated value was $15. She said she stole it because she was too embarrassed to purchase it .

Now I’ve purchased stuff that no man in his right mind would purchase without being embarrassed, but I did because I got it for free or close to it. I think there have been times where all at the same time I have bought tampons, Gas-X, Beano, lipstick, mascara, KY jelly, Tuck’s hemorrhoid wipes, Depends, pregnancy testers, and Butt paste for babies. And I was excited about it! Not about the stuff I was buying, but that I got it all for free. I think I also got beer which is probably not really a real good item to get in combination with the other items. People probably already think I’m a weirdo with all the coupons I have.

But I could care less about what someone would think when it comes to me saving money. Heck, I go into stores with two huge contraptions of coupons that don’t scream macho. One time when I was teaching Junior Achievement one of the kids asked if I was embarrassed to bring in all my coupons to the store. I said no, I’d be more embarrassed if I were broke. That answer seemed to suffice with the kids since they all wanted some of my coupons afterwards.

We’re all afraid of how people will judge us, but if we are doing something good why would we worry about what another person thinks? Perhaps, as youngsters, if we felt more stigma to not go into debt, as adults we’d be less likely to have money issues. Once we set our spending habits when we are young, it’s hard to make the cuts in spending later on.

And we all have health issues as we get older. I don’t recall seeing someone slapping their knees and laughing as they pointed at a person buying a suppository or other “embarrassing” item. It’s all in our heads. Maybe that lady got picked on when she was younger and it carried into her adult life. I say embrace your differences and problems and own them. She coulda slapped down the suppository and told the cashier I sure hope this works because I’m tired of that ‘monkey’s behind at the zoo’ feeling. She woulda shared a laugh and the person that was thinking of pointing and laughing would lose their reason to do so.

So that’s my mission. I’m going to make it cool to buy embarrassing stuff and to use coupons with it. Conversely, I plan to ridicule people when they don’t use a coupon and don’t have a store card to scan. I’ll tell them, “You Big Dummy” in my Sanford & Sons Red Foxx voice. I’ll also break the ice when I see someone shopping for the “embarrassing” stuff and make small talk and tell them I have the same issue even if I don’t. That will make them comfortable. Speaking of, I need to get a new supply of Ex Lax…on sale of course. I just buy it because I like the chocolate taste.

ARE YOU OWED MONEY?

September 23rd, 2010

UNCLAIMED FUNDS
Are you owed money? You may be owed some money by the state. Check any state you’ve lived in to see if you are due unclaimed funds. All you have to do is type in your name and it will let you know if you are owed money.

I found a couple people I work with on the site. One is owed more than $600 and he is pursuing the claim! Amazingly, my wife is also was due some money. You wouldn’t think this would be something that is on the site, but it’s for some money she lost in a pop machine that is owed to her by Pepsi! Hmm, I wonder if unclaimed funds include money I lost in bubble gum machines…
